Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

In 1979 I worked in Chelsea Girl, the predecessor of River Island. I clearly remember the sizes - size 10 was 32" bust, 22" waist and 34" hip which if I'm not mistaken is now the dreaded Size Zero!

I have been a size 14 since I was, well, 14 and the fact that I am now 3 stone heavier is a minor consideration! Confused @ vanity sizing!

I'm 5'4 and 11.5 stone!

shrinkingnora · 24/04/2011 19:16

This is very interesting and reassuring.

5'4''
12st 8lb
16/18

but previously 11st 9lb size 16
and also 12st 5lb and a size 12-14 on bottom, 16 on top.

Am I the only person who can't declare their dress size?

I am close to 5'8", and about 61-62 kg (just over 10 stone, I think).
I am about the same measurements (~38-28-38) as a young Sophia Loren but I would struggle to find a dress to fit, because I am not pear-shaped. I typically need size 8 in trousers & size 16 in tops (am only 36C or so, but broad shouldered).

If someone can suggest what dress size I should be, please do!

musicmadness · 24/04/2011 19:33

spanky2 · 24/04/2011 19:40

11 stone 12
Size 16.

I don't understand when in magazines women the same weight and similar height as me are a size 12.

Size 12 in tops, larger 34DD breasts Hmm

constantlywrong · 24/04/2011 19:55

5"7 or 8 ish

10 and a half stone, or thereabouts

Size 10

Def heavy bones as well

NotaMopsa · 24/04/2011 20:00

I don't think there is such a thing as heavy bones

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 24/04/2011 20:01

Yes I also find this confusing. Constantly see something in mags with celebs like like 5ft 4, 9 1/2 stone, size 10... yeah...
Very puzzling. Would say I am 'normal' boned, 5 ft 6, 9 stone, and am 10/12 - eg 10 M&S, 12 GAP. M& S definitely vanity sizing - don't really know others. But am definitely 1kg over on the stomach.

Dessie12 · 24/04/2011 20:01

mybootsaremuddy · 24/04/2011 20:06

Im currently pregnant with twins, so am a little bigger than normal. But usualy i am:
5ft 7
50kg
size 6-8bottom and 8-10 top.

shrinkingnora · 24/04/2011 20:12

This picture is quite interesting and would explain why a fit me weighs more but is a smaller dress size than a fat me.

shrinkingnora · 24/04/2011 20:13

Meant to say also that the people saying they have heavy bones may have a higher percentage of muscle.

sickoftheholidays · 24/04/2011 20:34

I'm 5ft 10
Currently 16st and quite obese according to BMI, size 16-18 depending on the shop. Most people dont believe that I weigh what I do until I get on the scales. I dont deny I'm carrying some extra weight I shouldnt be, but I still have excellent muscle tone, having spent all my adult life horse riding and looking after horses, which is hard physical graft even on a good day.

before kids I was 13-13.5st and size 14 and a 16 in top shop etc
On my wedding day I was 11st and a size 12, occasionally a 10 in M&S
At my very slimmest as an adult I was 10st 2lb, a size 10 and was very skinny, quite unhealthy actually.

CareyFakes · 24/04/2011 20:43

5ft 8"
15'3 (and a half lol)
Size 16-18 bottom
Size 18-20 Top

I've been on WW since Jan, weight coming off well. I am apple shape, slim legs, all up top.

I have size 8-9 feet, HUGE hands, big head, and broad. I will be interested to see what I look like come 'healthy range' weight (next April lol)

EmmaBemma · 24/04/2011 20:46

Height: 5' 9"
Weight: 10 stone 8 lb
Dress size: 12

catseverywhere · 24/04/2011 20:50

5ft 1"
10 stone 2
Size - thought I was a 16, but the woman in the dress shop yesterday told me I was a 14, and thrust a series of size 14 skirts at me to try on, and she was right so I nearly kissed her.

The Wii Fit still says I'm overweight but has stopped telling me I'm obese.
