Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

Oh Blimey! Erm - am 5 foot 4 inches tall, and weigh 7 and a half stone, with a medium frame.

I am an odd shape though. Am slim with no arse or thighs to speak of, but I have a wide waist -my rib cage sits right on top of my hips, and I don't go in at the waist hardly. I can't bear tight things around my waist, so am normally a size 10 bottoms, or a generous size 8.

I also have fairly broad shoulders, for my size, and am 34D, so a size 10-12 for the top. Am slim but wiry with muscle - Go figure - told you I am odd!

I have never been obsessed with my clothes size . I am 5ft 7 inches , and size 10. I don't bother weighing myself, because i am aware of the fact your weight does not always reflect how you look. One has to take into consideration body proportions etc.
I know women who are a size 18 who look pretty slim to me and others who are only a size 8 or 10, but look slightly chubby.

5ft10 and a bit
15 stone
huge boobs! and pretty good muscle
size 16, sometimes 14 on top

CointreauVersial · 25/04/2011 01:38

5 ft 7
9 stone
Currently a size 10.

I recently lost a stone-and-a-half, and it nearly all went from my bottom half, so none of my Size 12 skirts and trousers fit any more. I can get away with most of my old tops, though.

But I keep forgetting I'm now a 10, and take the wrong size into the fitting rooms all the time! I'm lighter now than I've ever been in my adult life.

Interesting what someone said about the sizing in the past being smaller - I found an ancient stash of Size 14 clothes in my loft, dating back to the early 1990s, and they were all tiny round the waist.

LittleJennyRobyn · 25/04/2011 01:55

5ft
6st 10
generally a size 6, but can vary so much depending where i buy, getting sick of buying clothes in the size i think i need and finding they are too big.

I searched online about sizing and found a really great

study <a class="break-all" href="//.www.rodcollins.com/wordpress/what-dress-size-or-waist-size-am-i-really" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">HERE

Really makes an interesting read, so now i just buy what fits and dont give two hoots about what size i am wearing.

lazydog · 25/04/2011 03:44

5ft 6.5in
10st 8lbs
sz 12uk tops, 14 bottoms.
(Either an 8 or 10 here in Canada.)

Cat98 · 25/04/2011 08:55

I fluctuate - at the moment i'm 9 st 5 and a clear size 12. The lowest I tend to go is 8 st 12 and then fit in to my size 10s. I am 5 ft 3. Does anyone else fluctuate like this? I'm at the heaviest I usually go at the mo, as I feel rubbish now so will be really careful about what I eat! But my weight really does change up to half a stone every few weeks. A few lbs really notices on me though, as my face really chubs out when I put on weight!

5' 4" - 10st - size 12 (although I'm pg with twins so that's sort of going out of the window). My favourite weight was 9 stone 4 lbs which I was for a long time until dh and I decided to ttc and it crept up to 10st. Even then, I was still a size 12 on my hips/bum - I think I could be an 8 all over but my hips and bum would still stay a size 12.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 25/04/2011 09:52

I don't really talk about dress size as it varies so wildly between shops, and sometimes even between different items within shops. Also some shops have different size scales, often using US sizes or, like Ted Baker, using a 0-5 scale. I tend to know what size I am in individual shops, but if an assistant in a shop I rarely use asks me what size I need I usually say '10'. Depending on the place and the item though I might end up with a 6, 8, or 12!

5' 10" and 9 stone, by the way.

JennaTailor · 25/04/2011 10:12

6 foot and 11 stone. Size 10 on top and size 10/12 or even sometimes a 14 on the bottom.

I tried on some jeans the other day in the same shop - just different styles. ...in one style i fitted a 10 and in another style the 14's didnt fit me.

My clothes size varies from a 6 to a 12 depending on where I shop, but I think of myself as a ten. If I sew I am a fourteen ( which I find a bit traumatic and weird - if I am fourteen ,who does an eight fit?). I am 5'2 and will have to run off to find a scale now...

fyrtlemertile · 25/04/2011 10:43

Unpregnant - 5ft4, 8st give or take a lb or 2 and a size 8. (occassionally a 6 or a 10 depending on fit).

No boobs to speak of, very small waist but large arse and thighs.

At the moment, still 5ft4, 8st8 and a size 10-12 but I am 4 months pregnant. Luckily on the clothing front I don't put on much weight during pregnancy (never got to 9st with DS1 and with the DTS I only weighed 9st 7) but I'd much rather have a big bump. People think I'm purposely trying not to put on weight but nothing could be further from the truth :(

tryingtoleave · 25/04/2011 10:50

Can't find one - I think 55 kg is about normal for me.

Depends a lot on height, I think. I'm a little over 8st and a size 10-12 (or occasionally an 8 depending on the shop and style!) . However I'm only 5'2" so 8st for me is not skinny.

I do have the same problem with jeans and trousers, often have to go up a size so they're not too tight on my bum/thighs, which means several excess inches around my waist which has to be cinched in with a belt...

EgguStudent · 25/04/2011 11:31

5'8"
11st (maybe a bit under at the moment)
10 for tops, 12 for bottoms

bibbitybobbityhat · 25/04/2011 11:36

5'2" size 14 at 10stone7 to 11stone4.

I know I weigh more than that atm because I am size 16 (and miserable).

cantpooinpeace · 25/04/2011 11:39

5 10' 15st 7lbs range from 16 - 20 depending on the shop!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 25/04/2011 11:39

5ft - 145lbs - Size 12-14

EveWasFramed72 · 25/04/2011 12:17

5 9'9
11st 13
size 16 bottom 14 top (in most shops)

I seriously do not know how people of similar weight as me are getting into smaller than a 16...honestly...I could squeeze into a 14, but the muffin top situation would be out of control, and they would hurt me! How is this possible??? I know body shape has some bearing, but it seems awfully optimistic to get into a 10/12 on the bottom????

EveWasFramed72 · 25/04/2011 12:18

oops.. I meant 5 9'

maighdlin · 25/04/2011 12:46

I don't understand it either. I'm 5' 9 and weigh about 21 something stone, used to weigh 23 5 Shock when i was at my heaviest i was having to get size 24 clothes. Now I'm in 22 sometimes a 20. I would always have to get 22 in a top as have GG boobs. I can't understand how I am a size 22 at my weight when there are others wearing 22 at about 16-17 stone. I have about 4 stone on them but we would be the same size. They may be one or two inches shorter but not enough for the extra 4 stone to make sense. Maybe i should be a 24-26 but i don't squeeze myself into my size 22 clothes so people must be buying clothes that are too big for them.
