Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

Jena sorry completely OT but you said you're a 44DD?!

Have you had a bra fit recently? It's just I was a bra fitter for 5 years and never once fitted anyone in that size. It sounds more likely that you'd need a smaller back and a larger cup

Sorry if that comes across rudely, it's not intended to be

I find this fascinating. Straw poll of all those saying they're 5' 7" (as I am) on this thread - so different!
11st8 16
10st6 12
10st 0 10
10st 2 10-12
10st 7 10-12
10st 4 12
9st 3 8
8st 12 8-10

I'm currently 9st 8 and 34DD-30-38 (a loose M&S 12). Even within the same height there is so much variation.

Good call KingsScorn on BMIs and sizes. I can add in a previous diet too before I had DC, which shows how my bust and waist changed possibly permanently (though a PT is now helping tone that back a bit).

BMI:weight-pre-baby-------post-baby
33.7:15.4------------46 (20-22)-43.5(24)-46.5 (18-20)
30.0:13.7--40(16)-34(16)-43(16)----43(18)-39(20)-44(16)
28.2:12.10--39(16)-33(16)-42(18)--42(18)-38.5(20)-43(16)
27.7:12.7------------41(16)-38(20)-42(16)
27.2:12.3--38(14)-32(14)-41(14-16)---41(16)-37.5(18-20)-41.5(14)
26.4:11.12----------40(16)-35.5(18)-40(12)
25.7:11.8--37(14)-30(12)-40(12)----38(14)-34.5(16)-39.5(12)
24.2:10.13--36(12)-29(12)-39(12)--38(14)-34(16)-39(12)
23.6:10.8--35-28-38(10-12)----36.5(12)-33(16)-38(10-12)
21.3:9.8----------36(12)-30(12)-37(10)

This is all quite weird as all my old clothes from years ago are all 14s, and I was about 10st. When I was a teen, a size 10 was 34-24-34 and to be there I had to be less than 9st. How the sizings have changed... I really wish that people would sell women's clothing by units of measurement! That way things would actually stand a chance of fitting...

moonbells · 25/10/2018 12:30

oops typo the 12st 10 pre-baby hip should be a size 16...

moonbells · 25/10/2018 12:59

Wow. Found the 1989 sizes to compare with today's M&S. Yikes.

Interestingly I have recently lost weight from 19.1lb to my current weight and I have not seen a significant decrease in my dress size still in a 20 and 22. Looking forward to an 18 lol
