Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

I'm 40wks pg so just now I'm tipping the scales at a little over 13st- ouch!

Usually however, I'm:

5ft 8
11.5st
Size 14 (sometimes a 12) with 34e boobs

I feel about 7-10lbs overweight at that...

BigSooz · 24/04/2011 12:20

I'm 6 ft.

11.5 st and a size 14, can occasionally squeeze into a 12.

My sister is the same height, weighs 9 stone and is a size 8.

firsttimemum77 · 24/04/2011 12:21

I am 5feet 2inches. Pre pregnancy I weighed 9stone 7lbs and a size 12.
Post pregnancy I was 11stone 3lbs and a size 14 / 16.
When my dd was 7 months old and a random person asked me when the baby was due I took drastic action and am now 8stone 5lbs and a size 8 bottoms and 6/8 top.

MollieO · 24/04/2011 12:24

I suppose the other thing to consider is how long your legs are? I have long legs (longer than some others my height) so that may explain why I'm a size 16 rather than anything bigger.

trixymalixy · 24/04/2011 12:26

5ft 8

12 stone ish.

I'm a size 14 in pretty much every shop.

Want to lose 2 stone.

5ft 3, 10st 7,
Size 10-12. I just weigh a lot, most people don't believe me (including dr recently).
Went down to 9st 7 last year and ended up in size 6!!!

turnipvontrapp · 24/04/2011 12:34

5ft 6
11 stone 6
size 12, some skirts are a 10 but only white stuff style ones

silentcatastrophe · 24/04/2011 12:37

I don't really know what dress size I wear. Usually 10/12/14 or there abouts. If I am making something the dress size is about 18. I am 5'7'' and about 10 stone. People think I'm skinny. I just have bony knees!!
I don't think dress size correlates to physical size in a meaningful way.

juneybean · 24/04/2011 12:38

5 ft 6

Size 20/22 bottom

I am small-boned, however. Pre-pregnancy I averaged 9st7 - 10st and was normally a size 8, sometimes a size 6. DS is still just 10 weeks though and I'm EBF, so can't lose it too fast. At 10st I feel an ok weight, and at 9st7, I feel great.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 24/04/2011 12:47

I don't go by dress size, as I agree that's not a meaningful way to measure.

I think BMI is a better indicator for overall health.

When trying to lose weight, I also check body measurements since pure weight loss isn't always accurate either, since muscle weighs more than fat. This is where dress size comes in. If you were a size 14 most of the time, and you go down to a size 10 most of the time, then that's a job very well done, even if you didn't lose that much actualy weight.

weight 10st 9lbish (68kg) and realistically size 14/16

Pre-pregnancy 8st 9lb(ish) (55kg) and size 8/10 (sob!) Occasionally 6 tops as flat-chested.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 24/04/2011 15:14

48kg the last time I weighed myself (Xmas I think)

My sister is the same height and dress size as me but a completely different shape and is approx 7kg heavier.

My friend is the same height, weight and dress size as me but is again a completely different shape.

MoreSenseThanMoney · 24/04/2011 16:46

5ft 5
9 st

Generally, size 10 in 'younger' shop sizing (Topshop, H&M) but 8 in vanity sizing (M&S etc) and also in some designers, which I think tend to be a bit larger than high street sizes.

I have fairly wide hips so I'm usually a 10 in trousers but am often an 8 in tops and dresses.

A1980 · 24/04/2011 17:13

5ft 4ins
10st 4lbs
Size 12.

I am sometimes a 10 in tops depending on the shop becasue I carry most of my weight around my bum and hips and my top is quite small.

PiaThreeTimes · 24/04/2011 17:17

Size 10.

JiminyCricket · 24/04/2011 17:19

5 ft 2, 13.5 stone size 16-18 (at more usual and still v overweight 12.5 stone I am 14-16 and quite a few size 16 trousers hang off me - but only from certain shops, would be size 18 in Next). Have learnt to go for best fit. I look right at 11-12 stone, even though that's overweight, its just my shape.

DontCallMePeanut · 24/04/2011 17:29

Same as SKnittingBunnies, but only a 14 on the bottom. 10 on the top. Annoying when trying to shop for damn dresses, believe me.
