Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

5'5
8st 5lb
size 6/8 on top
8/10 on the bottom :)

Where do you measure your waist? At the thinnest point, or where trousers/jeans sit? My jeans tend to sit quite low, just above my iliac crest, and I usually take a 28 waist, but does that mean my actual waist is smaller?
Inside leg 35".

For a moment I was Shock

I'm not sharing figures - but for some reason my frame is such that I can weigh quite heavy, but size comparatively small if you get what I mean. I've weighed some numbers in the past and been accused of lying by people who wouldn't believe them because I didn't "look" that weight.

fluffles · 30/05/2011 13:06

i'm 5'2"

i weigh 11 stone Blush

but for some weird reason i am only a size 14 and sometimes a 12.

i blame years of martial arts and now running and mountain biking, i am also very strong - i guess i have muscle under my layer of fat, but anybody would think i had bones made of lead!!!

Bottleofbeer · 30/05/2011 15:24

I'm 5'3 and have lost half a stone this week taking me to 11 stone. I'm lucky in that when I stop eating crap I lose weight very quickly.

I'm generally a size 14 but am only small in the arse and thigh area so anything to fit my waist tends to hang off my arse.

Odd though before I had kids I was 7-ish stone, that kind of weight these celebs diet to to be a size zero but at that weight I was a comfortable size ten. I wasn't skinny with it. Maybe sizing has changed in the last 15 years.

Going to keep going till I reach about nine and a half, which makes me a comfy 12.

sprinkles77 · 30/05/2011 15:35

5ft 1. About 9st +/- 2lb. Depends on the shop, usually a 10, sometimes an 8. If the 10 is too small I shop elsewhere! Sizing has definitely changed. I have an old M&S cashmere sweater which says size 14. I think it's at least 20 years old cos I wore it at school and it was a hand me down then. I know it's shrunk a little, but not loads cos it's not gone all stiff like shrunken wool tends to. It fits me fine.

sprinkles77 · 30/05/2011 15:36

oh, measure waist at the narrowest part, usually at or near your navel.

valiumbandwitch · 30/05/2011 15:38

I think people's waist sizes are more of a guide to their clothes size than their weight.

5'2"
124lbs
size 10-12
waist 29" (i'm trying to reduce that)

Somebody my weight with enormous boobs would have to be smaller everywhere else.

TalkinPeace2 · 30/05/2011 15:47

Here's a thing to test your actual "build"
What is your wrist circumference?

I'm 5'5" 9 stone 6 and size 10
I do a LOT of yoga and swimming
my wrist is 15cm round...

Mollydollydoll · 30/05/2011 16:04

Well I am 5"7 weigh 12 stone 13 and my dress size is 14
If it's a cheap dress from primark it's a 16 lol

bigTillyMint · 30/05/2011 16:15

I'm 5'8"
10 stone-ish
Size 10/12 usually
wrist is 16cm round.

What does that mean?

bigTillyMint · 30/05/2011 16:17

I have a very broad back and wide shoulders.

TalkinPeace2 · 30/05/2011 16:26

Tilly - there is an advanced version of the BMI used by medics that uses wrist circumference to adjust the expected weight - let's see what others come in with.

rookiemater · 30/05/2011 16:44

Thats interesting talkinpeace2 as I have absolutely tiny wrists and ankles but broad shoulders and hips.
As I said above I am 5ft5.5 and roughly 10st 12, at 11st and above I look really fat even though thats just above BMI and I think its because my frame is designed to be reasonably thin IYSWIM whereas I know some people who weigh more than me who don't look fat.

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/05/2011 16:47

5ft 3 1/2

weight fluctuates between 10st 4 and 10st 9

size 12 - 14

for every stone ive gained in weight i go up a dress size. i used to weight 7st 5 and be a size 8.

valiumbandwitch · 30/05/2011 17:44

BMIs must be on the way out. Still useful, but I think waist to height ratio is far more telling. I was shocked that mine was about 50%!! Sounds very high and I don't think of myself as 'fat' although I'd like to be slimmer.

valiumbandwitch · 30/05/2011 17:48

It was 48.5%

Barbies is 25% apparently!!

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 30/05/2011 18:17

My wrists are 16cm round. I'm 5' 10" and 9 stone. Waist is 26". (measured at narrowest point, near navel ? thanks sprinkles!

bumpsoon · 30/05/2011 18:22

My wrists are 16cm too ! im 5' 5and a half and weigh 14 stone 13 , i wear next size 16 jeans and they are falling off me at the mo . I am a strange shape though !

tyler80 · 30/05/2011 19:03

How exactly do they adjust BMI based on your wrist measurement?

I have a feeling that I'd do even worse once they take your wrists into account - mine are 14cm.

My wrists and ankles are very bony but not particularly representative of my build if that makes any sense. e.g. my forearms must be bigger than average, because something like a shirt with 3/4 length sleeves are too tight just below the elbow.
