Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

5ft8
11 stone
dress size 14-16
BMI says I'm right at the top end of average, occasionally it classes me as overweight.

Would consider myself overweight for my natural frame :/

Would be healthier being 9 1/2 stone, as I once was!

yukoncher · 27/05/2011 18:32

My waist is way too big. 35inches Angry

foreverondiet · 27/05/2011 18:36

I am 5 foot 4 inches. 8 stone 11 pounds.

Size 10. I know this as I measured with tape measure - 36 hips, 28 waist and 34 bust. However in some shops, ie M&S size 10 is too big, and size 8 fits, even though I know I am a size 10. I am not an 8 though.

I would say therefore to go by measurements with tape measure and not by some shops interpretations. I know some people who say they are a 14 when I am sure they are a 16 or 18. Maybe they mean that they can buy 14s if its cut generously.

I am 5 foot 8 inches
10 stone
size 10/12 depending on where I buy / cut. Size 8 at times!

deliakate · 27/05/2011 18:41

Height 5ft 5.5, about 10.5 stone, size 10 to 12

yukoncher · 27/05/2011 18:44

bigTilyMint I'm jealous! :p

JamieAgain · 27/05/2011 18:45

Height 5 ft 3 and a half
Weight 9 stone

Dress size 8, sometimes (Monsoon/Next)
10 M & S
12 Top Shop

Clothes have definitely got bigger without the sizes changing.

bigTillyMint · 27/05/2011 18:50

Well, it's usually only size 8 in supermarket sizes. And then only certain styles!

ivykaty44 · 27/05/2011 18:51

Please could you all clarify your waist in cm or inches and inside leg measurment - as dress size change from shop to shop and I want to know

mine is 31 inches x 31 inches

bigTillyMint · 27/05/2011 18:53

My waist is 27 or 28 I think and inside leg 35?

yukoncher · 27/05/2011 18:55

bigTillyMint
okay, you can stop boasting now Envy

:-p:)

minxofmancunia · 27/05/2011 18:58

5'8"

8 stone 11 pounds
waist 26
legs 34
dress size 8 below
10 on top (dd boobs)

headfairy · 27/05/2011 19:01

5'10"
Currently 14st5lbs (and losing fast - yay!)
I'm a size 16 but starting to eye up my size 14 stuff. If I lie down I can get a pair of size 14 jeans on but I can't do anything trivial like breathe in them :o

yukoncher · 27/05/2011 19:05

ok, I'm 40'' 34'' 40
5ft 8
dress size 14-16

yukoncher · 27/05/2011 19:07

32 inch leg

ravenlocks · 27/05/2011 19:07

5'10"
10 stone
Size 10 (top and bottom), 8 on a good day

BMI I thinks is normal, but on the underweight side of normal

Lightest I have been as a fully grown adult was 9 stone 4 and looking back to photos I looked like a lollipop head

ImBrian · 27/05/2011 19:23

5ft 10, 10 stone and a size 10 sometimes a 12.
would prefer to be 9st7 but Im pregnant so will have to wait.

suzikettles · 27/05/2011 19:25

I'm 5'6" and 11 stone. Size 12, 14 or 16 depending on the shop and the item.

43" hips, 34" waist, 34" chest, F cup, very broad shoulders.

Odd shape and difficult to get clothes to look good. I need to lose a stone and I'm v keen to get that waist measurement down as it indicates a pile of abdominal fat which isn't healthy.

suzikettles · 27/05/2011 19:31

Right, just read up on how to measure yourself properly and discovered that taking your bust measurement isn't the same as when measuring for a bra Blush, so I'm actually 43/34/42 which makes more sense.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 27/05/2011 19:32

I am 5ft 4ins, 10 stone 4 pounds and a size 12.

CognitiveDissident · 27/05/2011 19:41

I'm 5'8" and vary between 9.5 and 10 stone. Size 10 bottom, 12 top.

37 "hips, 29" waist, 40" bust (yay for breastfeeding!)

Sizes have definitely changed; at 18 I was size 10 and weighed 8 stone.

MizzyFizzy · 27/05/2011 19:44

I posted earlier but as we now want measurements too.....

5ft 4in

10st10lb

Hips 34"

Waist 28" and a half!!

Chest 42" but only wear a 34D bra..... rib cage 34 (just under boobs) ...get the tape around my shoulder blades - 2" down from armpits - to measure chest including boobs and it all goes to pot..... huuuuuuuge back and shoulders as mentioned before.

34" rib cage and a D cup should = a 38" ish chest I believe.

Inside leg 29 to 30 depending on cut of trousers.

Oh and no idea about my BMI probs top end of Ok....never looked...... as I'm built like flippin' wrestler presumed BMI would be useless as a guide!

BulletWithAName · 27/05/2011 19:56

Posted earlier as well but didn't include measurements....

Bust- 36"
Waist-26.5"
Hips- 38"
