Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

I often think I could be confused for a man, a very short one.

I am 5ft somewhere around 8st (just under last time I looked), and an 8... sometimes boned dresses are more, the kids did something to my ribs during pregnancy... they seem to be bigger... so I look even more 'boyish'. Am thinking I need to lose weight... another half a stone.. I did get down there but my clothes fell off. (my stats were somethinglike 30-26-32).

NacMacFeegle · 27/05/2011 20:30

Measurement adding - 5'7, 11 stone,

38/33/37. No actual arse, giant lardy middle. Gorgeous, I am. Grin

5'8"

11st 2lb

32/28/39. However I have very broad shoulders, which I actually quite like cos they balance out my hips. Stupidly narrow ribcage resulting in 'difficult to get bras for' boobs.

32" inside leg.

I would really like to lose 3/4 of a stone or so, to reduce my thunder thighs. I will, one day. After I've had enough chocolate.

5 feet 8 (have shrunk - I'm sure I was 5'9") and 10 and a quarter stone. I need to be 9 stone 7lbs - 10 stone to feel comfortable (though I have 'big bones' - broad shoulders). It has taken me for ever to loose the last few pounds (which kind of makes me feel this is my natural weight for my age now).

wheredidyoulastseeit · 27/05/2011 21:01

5 feet 7
10stone 7lbs
anything between size 10 (m&S) to Large (zara)
BMI 23

Shodan · 27/05/2011 21:06

LeQueen - no, don't think so. Do they do good, comfy non-wired bras? Can't stand underwires for daytime. And they need to be a 32D. Add the two requirements together and ta-da! Problem!

bigTillyMint · 27/05/2011 21:18

MudandMayhem, I used to be 9 and a half stone pre-DC, also 5'8 and now my natural weight seemd to be 10st or just over.

PercyPigPie · 27/05/2011 21:59

bigTillyMint - it's a bit grim, isn't it? I noticed when a group of school friends and I met last year that we all suddenly started to change shape :-(. Glad it's not just me though!

FreudianSlipper · 27/05/2011 22:05

5.2
11 stone
size 14, creeping up to 16

Normal pre-children weight 9-9 1/2 stone and size 10-12.

Have quite good muscle tone, except for current flabby belly, medium built, smallish boobs.

EttiKetti · 27/05/2011 23:53

I'm 5'4", about 14 stone and size 16. I'm thrilled tho.because 8 months ago I was a size 28/30 and 23 stone!

cornflowers · 27/05/2011 23:59

5'4
8 stone 10
size 6-12 !?

My weight is pretty much the same as it was pre-dc's, however not all of my old clothes fit, due to some unfortunate - ahem- redistribution of assets.

Shodan · 28/05/2011 00:06

Gah.

That'll teach me to post when I'm busy watching telly

Dress size around 12-14, although things like dresses usually come up a bit big around the waist.

midlandsmumof4 · 28/05/2011 00:14

Height 5'
Weight 12st.11
Size 16/18/20..depends where I buy from. Big boobs-not too large waist-hips to suit boobs.....Grin

What the heck is "stone???" All I know is that all women's sizes are different, based on the designer and manufacturer. You need to try it on or stretch it against you. I find I am an XL in women's shirts but I have no idea with pants or shorts or skirts or capris. Basically, if it fits, it's your size with THAT designer. I have found that 16 - 18 works for me but I prefer to go with the Large or Extra Large sizes. The numbers don't work as well as the Large or XL sizes. I love T-shirts while I am trying to lose weight so almost all the time I will wear T-shirts and capris. Then, I can better know what I fit into.

PenguinArmy · 28/05/2011 05:37

Are you in the US hsurp or is it a rhetorical question? One stone is 14lbs and to get from US to UK size you need to add 2 (even) sizes, so a US 4 is a UK 8.

Pre pg, A size 8 (XS to S), BMI mid range, height 5' 0-1" weight 8 stone and a bit.

LinzerTorte · 28/05/2011 05:55

5' 5"
about 7.5 stone
size 8

I'm quite pear shaped and 15-20 years ago (when I weighed around the same - the heaviest I've been is just over 8 stone) used to be a size 10 for tops and a size 12 for bottoms, but am almost always a size 8 now (occasionally need a size 6 for tops or a size 10 for bottoms). Hmm

PlentyOfPrimroses · 28/05/2011 06:09

5'6"
about 9 st 10 (down from 11 stone at christmas).
Size 12 bottoms, 14 tops on account of broad shoulders.
bra - 36AA - that's a man's bra size isn't it? Sad

As an experiment I weighed myself every day for a few weeks and was amazed to find my weight fluctuated by up to 5lb day to day.

BulletWithAName · 28/05/2011 07:48

PlentyOfPrimroses- My weight does this too!Very odd isn't it?

ExpatAgain · 28/05/2011 08:09

5'11, 9 st 13 size 10-14 as wide shoulders, long limbs, nothing ever fits!
