Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

5' and 9st 7lbs
Clothes 12 on the bottom, 14-16 on the top (32G norks, which probably adds a bit to my weight Grin)

So, dress size usually a 14 but they never fit/suit me Sad.

leftblank · 27/05/2011 15:46

32G Wowser!

5ft9

Currently 10st 5 ish

Size 10 - 12 (have grown an ass since having my baby)

QuickLookBusy · 27/05/2011 15:47

Funtime have you seen Pepperberry?

They do clothes for big norks. I have got a couple of their dresses and although the quality isn't fantastic they are a blooming good fit.

Is there anyone who does clothes for small norks? If a top is long enough in the sleeves it's invariably a couple of sizes too big round the torso or vice versa.

Funtimewincies · 27/05/2011 16:04

I have QuickLookBusy, but they've not yet cottoned on to short people with big norks Sad. Mind you, their necklines show my belly button off beautifully Grin.

I have requested a petite section, so fingers crossed that enough people raise it.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 27/05/2011 16:12

I am also puzzled at the variation. I am 5'6, currently just over 9 stone, and mostly a size 12, although sometimes size 10 where they do vanity sizing Grin Annoyingly, boguht three dresses (size 12) last week by mail order - when they turned up they were way too big, and now the website says they're out of size 10 Sad - s'pose I should have learned by now to buy 10 and 12 and send the wrong ones back...

hmc · 27/05/2011 17:27

It would be quite useful if people could post current photos and we could make our own private (or not so private) assessments. Perhaps cut your head off the photo if you are worried about being identified....

hmc · 27/05/2011 17:28

Just a though - and probably a not very popular one Grin

tyler80 · 27/05/2011 17:29

I have a photo up on my profile, it's was put up there to illustrate a point in past BMI discussions

hmc · 27/05/2011 17:32

You look very trim tyler - in my estimation (without cheating and looking at your post) I am thinking size 10 perhaps 8? Now I am going to look at what you said!

hmc · 27/05/2011 17:35

I was right with the size 10 but would never have guessed at your height of only 5ft 4 you weigh nearly 11 stone - it sounds 'heavy' given that you are slim and average-ish height. Sort of fits in with what I thought about weight and BMI being a bit misleading in some cases

raindroprhyme · 27/05/2011 17:36

5'4
9st 5
size 8/10
got big boobs and bum

raindroprhyme · 27/05/2011 17:43

i would have said i was a similar shape to you tyler from your photo my Stats are 32 E boobage i have an tiny waist so size 10 trousers gape on me cos of my arse.
But that could be me lying on the beach.

TheFlyingOnion · 27/05/2011 17:46

5'6
10st 7
size 10

was 12st 7 and a 14.

I've always been heavier than I look, IYSWIM

hmc · 27/05/2011 17:46

But the point is raindrop that at same height and, as you've said, same shape as tyler, you weigh 1 stone 5lb less than her. So weight is seemingly no guide at all as a measure

yeah makes no sense, unless the old addage of muscle weighs more than fat is true. i am very unfit at the moment, and Tyler looks ripped.

raindroprhyme · 27/05/2011 17:50

and tits as coffe points out.

NorhamGardens · 27/05/2011 17:52

5ft 4"
9.2 stone
Size 14, bottom and top. Why am I not a smaller dress size?

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 27/05/2011 17:55

I buy what fits! I'm 5'6", weigh about 10½ stone but tend to find that I'm 14 or even, occasionally, a 16 at times. Confused What I don't understand is when someone says that they are a size 14/16 and they are DEFINITELY bigger than me and there is simply no way that they could fit into some of my clothes and move, let alone be comfortable.

I have some things that are 10/12 and they fit perfectly, but they were bought pre children and I think the sizings were different then. TBH I just don't tend to study the sizes too hard and if it fits great, if it doesn't I get one up or one down.

raindroprhyme · 27/05/2011 17:57

Norham why???
you weigh less than me.

anewyear · 27/05/2011 17:58

5 4", 11 st 6lb
size 12 on bottom
size 18 on top (all mine by the way)

KTisPG · 27/05/2011 18:07

5 9', 13st size 12 bottom, size 14 top. BMI says overweight, but I feel healthy at that weight and wouldn't want to be any smaller so I chose to ignore them. I can't see how one rule can be applied to everyone when we all have different body shapes etc

coco2901 · 27/05/2011 18:22

I'm 5ft 8, currently 12 stone and size 14, I say currently as I had a baby 3weeks ago so I'm hoping to be back to my prepreg weight of 11.5 shortly... At 11.5 I still average a 14 but jeans and a few other items are a 12. I'm apple shaped with big (34E) boobs
