So this is how normal people feel about food?!

Two days into my second week on Mounjaro 2.5.
Not once, since the day after my first jab have I actively thought about food. Mealtimes can come and go without it even triggering a thought in my head. I’ve already lost 5kg which is 15% of my target loss.
DH makes dinners so it miraculously appears. I enjoy it but after about a third of what I’d normally eat I’ve had enough. I then don’t think about snacks for the rest of the night.
Compared to before when food consumed my thoughts all day this is an absolute revelation.
I used to wonder how people could pace themselves at a buffet, not eat their entire plate in one go or sit with an open packet of biscuits on their desk. This must be how they feel. It’s amazing.

You make it sound like “normal” people don’t make an active decision not to over eat .

SongOfTheDay · 28/08/2026 11:47

I think I am normal, healthy weight, fit snd active. I love food and eating, look forward to each meal and really enjoy treats. I don't recognise what you described.

MidnightMeltdown · 28/08/2026 11:49

Sorry OP but attitudes like yours are exactly why most people are sick to death of fat people trying to make out that they’re ‘victims’, and so special that they’re the only people to experience ‘food noise’. They think that slim people don’t need to make any effort and that slimness just happens by magic 🙄

The vast majority of people get food noise. They just resist the temptation to overeat because maintaining a healthy weight is more important to them.

But that’s not true, they do think of food a lot of the day according to the naturally slim people on this thread - have you read the whole of the thread?

That’s not true though is it, there is a difference between naturally slim and slim, naturally slim people don’t need to work at it.

Some slim people are simply not naturally slim, they need to continually work at it. But Some slim people are naturally slim. And they don’t need to work at it.

my brother in law is in the latter category. He eats when hungry, stops when full and doesn’t think about food at other times, he never restricts himself. If he’s hungry he eats, if he’s full he says I’ve had enough and stops. It just isn’t a driver for him, food is fuel. He enjoys what he eats and thats it. He’s always been like this, always relatively slim. I’d assume about a bmi 23 or 24, never gains weight, he is naturally slim.

My daughter is slim, but she manages her portions to manage her weight, if she over indulges at the weekend, she cuts down during the week and balances it out. If she fancies chocolate she will have it. But a couple of squares. Sporadic dessert. Occasional pack of crisps. So she has more effort. She doesn’t sit and think about food though. It’s not a lot of work for her. She doesn’t feel deprived. But she does manage it. Is she naturally slim, probably not no

ao there is a whole spectrum out there, and much of it depends on our biology, our metabolic processes.

some people like we have seen just think fat people don’t make the same effort, that they are lazy and greedy, that veryine gets the same food noise.

but if that was true weight loss meds wouldn’t work. As the vast majority on those drugs can push through, continue to eat too much, and it’s the reason we see some fail, or maintain. When our metabolic processes under control, insulin response, blood sugar, we can make the right decisions.

ignore the resentful and ignorant, not everyone takes the time to educate fhemselves.

I don’t get food noise and I think I probably am living life on easy mode in that respect.
I do exercise self control but it’s at one level down iyswim: making the effort to make a proper breakfast so I won’t be hungry halfway through the morning when I’m in a place where all I can access is junk, not drinking too much so I don’t wake up with a hangover craving sugar.
I don’t think it’s because I have superior self control though, I think it’s because I live a relatively stress free life with plenty of sleep and time to exercise and cook from scratch. Judging people with tougher lives than mine for self medicating with food or eating junk to get them through long shifts, and assuming my self control is better than theirs, would be ridiculous. It’s possible the genetic lottery has given me less food noise but it’s also possible the general lottery of life has given me an easy ride and that ultimately leads to the quieter food noise.

Best response on this thread!

TheOttey · 28/08/2026 13:30

I really do think there's something in the genes. You see whole families who are fat and whole families, multiple generations who are thin.
I'm not and never have been overweight. I've never dieted. My parents were thin, my dad was 6' and 10.5 stone all his life, my DH is thin, my adult DC are the same. I don't think about food much but I do enjoy it and eat pretty much what I want. I suppose I do have limits in that I don't eat between meals, ever.
I also lose weight very quickly and easily if I'm ill. DS (29) has to eat ridiculous amounts to gain weight, he easily eats double what I eat.

JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleneJolene · 27/08/2026 07:01

But have you read the other replies.
I think a lot of women think about food most/a lot of the time.
It's actually quite insulting that people think I'm thin with no effort involved

Well we’ll just have to agree that I don’t understand how it feels for you and you don’t understand how it feels for me.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/08/2026 13:46

i do think for some ( not all) overweight people though it’s kind of a viscious circle, I certainly thought about food a lot more throughout the day when I was very conscious of being quite a bit overweight - be that conscious of calories or using it for treating myself as I felt a bit down or just enjoying cooking because I didn’t enjoy excercise etc - I have lost 3 stone since, ( not MJ) still overweight , but only by a couple of stone now and I think about food a lot less generally - I still do think , ‘what shall I make for dinner or do I fancy an orange etc mid afternoon’ and I am still conscious of calories and I avoid cakes, crisps and biscuits - but overall I changed habits, filled time with other things so am just generally less conscious of thinking about it far too much -

Theolittle · 28/08/2026 13:53

It seems there are a few categories -

  1. naturally slim people who hardly have to try, they genuinely have a low appetite
  2. slim people who are slim because of constant restraint and restriction and have really good will power and drive
  3. yo yo dieters who really want to be slim and keep trying but find it extremely difficult, sometimes because of stress levels, physical issues, life events, mental health issues
  4. overweight people who aren’t really bothered about their health or size so eat as much as they want
  5. overweight people who are bothered but don’t know how to tackle it
  6. overweight people who have never tried to live healthily and want an easy solution

there may be others!

I think some of the seemingly unkind responders think a lot are in 6 above but who knows

I’m in 3 above and used to be in 2 above until I hit menopause. But I think feeling hunger is quite horrible and an annoying and in some ways debilitating human experience for most (especially as we’re all lucky that we never have such food shortages that the hunger is a real risk of starvation).

I’m 3 months in to MJ and it’s incredible not to have food noise. I’m scared of having to stop and I’m scared of it wearing off

Gosh yes, big pharma should just stop developing all drugs! Who needs better cancer treatments or a cure for Parkinsons? Not any of us!!

I’m sure you NEVER take advantage of anything that big pharma has produced - no vaccinations, antibiotics, anaesthetics, or even over the counter things like paracetemol, and I hope you don’t visit a GP or A&E if you get sick because they are all just shills for big pharma.

🙄

GodDamnitDonut · 28/08/2026 14:36

I must admit OP this is how it has always been for me. I’ve always been slim (ish) and food is not really something that bothers me. I can go days without a hot cooked meal and just snacking through the day.
I’m glad more people can now see what it’s like because I’ve been accused of competitive under-eating etc, especially on Mumsnet.

But people still need to get to the point of obesity in the first place, fat gene or no fat gene! That doesn't happen from undereating dies it? It happens when people eat too much for them.

I also remember a programme years ago when the fat gene theory was first touted, where a load of overweight people were convinced they had it and tested...only for a very small percentage of them to be found to have it.

Yes, genetic make-up does play a part, but 'normal people' notice their trousers are a bit tight and do do something about it. They don't let it escalate to a stage where it's extrenely difficult to lose or where they're completely sugar addicted. Yes, some people do find it more difficult to lose weight, and yes, some people unfortunately need fewer calories.

Like I said, the recovery for other addictions imclude accountability, this is not the case for food addiction. Understanding and excuses are two different things.

Edited

Who said anything about a fat gene? I didn't.
As I said, try listening to the radio programme if you want to understand.

I know plenty of people healed by "big pharma" - close relative with T1 diabetes, good friends no longer with cancer... I could write a long list while you're busy being rude.

I can assure you as can my gp,that my obesity related heath conditions are cured.

If your seeing your arse they have not invented a life long cure for obesity, a once and done injection, it is being worked on, but no science hasn’t got there yet, and I for one wouldn’t wish it.

but am I healed, as I look at my slim toned, size 8 body, with a bmi 20, as I work out most days, think of my healthy diet. My cured sleep apnea, my normal blood pressure that I no longer need those meds for, yeah, I’d say I am.

maybe not in your eyes, but mine are what counts for me.

In find the difference of opinion fascinating. As someone who was obese, I can say the food noise is very similar to a toddler that simply Won't. Shut. Up. To a point where you can't think of anything else because food thoughts dominate it.

My sister , a tall size 10, would say she loves food. Is a big foodie. Loves to cook. Thinks about dinner etc. In that way she thinks about food. But she doesn't OBSESS over it. I remember her Easter eggs lasting for months. Despite her talking for ages about how much she was looking forward to eating it. I would know how much of her egg was left more than she did.

She would regularly talk about food, new restaurants to visit etc. But she would "save herself" all day, eat at said restaurant until full, then eat nothing else for the rest of the day. Whereas my restaurant visit would be one of my three meals that day.

Her talk and mindset never matched actually going through with eating it. Her Instagram is also full of recipes and "food porn". But she describes it as someone who browses the shops for clothes but doesn't buy anything. Not through any will power but just that there was never any intention of eating it. Just window shopping.

If you asked her, I'm sure she would think she was obsessed with food but in reality she's not. Out of both of us, I'm the one who actively avoids food, changes restaurant plans, doesn't follow food trends or recipes and tries not to be around food more than I can help, and yet I was obese and couldn't stop thinking about it.

I do believe a lot of naturally slim people are like this. They think about food and it interests them but it's not an obsession.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 28/08/2026 17:16

No, of course not. I’m a size ten. Do you really think all people who are slim have absolutely no interest in food, ever? I’d love to eat a mars bar right now but I had a crunchie earlier so I won’t. I’ve never been disinterested in food. If I’m really enjoying it, I’ll sometimes eat more than I should and feel sick. But other days I’m careful and I eat smaller portions and eat more healthily.

MoneyJo · 28/08/2026 17:38

tbf a lot of these posts are really judgmental- it’s bizarre the amount of vitriol directed at people who are overweight or who are taking WLIs. Why does it bother other people so much.

It’s not fat people, I don’t think, it’s actually about the drugs, it’s been since they hit the market, so so many threads where this come out,

its people who are envious or resentful.

They think they have to work hard to achieve a healthy weight and think those on the drugs don’t, so they resent them or they are overweight and they can’t access the drugs, due to cost or contraindications, so are also resentful and jealous of those who can.

we didn’t really see this before. I’ve seen so many awful comments, from someone who posted they couldn’t wait till everyone on them got cancer, to someone who said people shouldn’t be able to get fashionably slim but stopped when they were chubby so others felt better about themselves.

its not about fat people, its about fat people being able to take these drugs and become slim successfully and with what they perceive as less work than they have to do.

people, women in particular , are really messed up about weight.
