Protein powder is repellent

pelagra · 25/02/2026 15:10

I'm trying to up my protein, which goes against the grain. I naturally want to eat higher carbs, low fat and protein. But I realise that this is what got me to BMI 31, so I'm trying to change as I start Wegovy. I cook from scratch all the time, so I've been browsing food websites and cookery books.

I found several recipes with vanilla protein powder, and bought some from Lidl. It is absolutely foul. Grainy, artificial tasting and sweetened. A perfect way to ruin an innocent bowl of porridge and fruit. I can't imagine why anyone would want to consume it.

I've also tried natural hemp protein powder. The flavour is better, but there is still a nasty texture to anything I add it to, and of course it turns everything olive green.

Should I accept this isn't for me, or is there a better version I could try?

I just get protein from food. I don’t understand the fascination people on WLI have with powders/drinks etc. A proper balanced diet will provide what you need.

ThirdStorm · 25/02/2026 15:14

I didn't get on with adding it to foods either, so now periodically I will drink a protein shake to give my protein a boost as I do struggle to eat as much protein as I should. I really like the "for goodness shakes" which have 35g protein.

Brightlittlecanary · 25/02/2026 15:15

I use vieve clear protein drinks, they are lovely and also Huel ready to drink, and my food,

I can’t comment on lidls protein powder.

Losingitalloveragain · 25/02/2026 15:16

Use Willpowders, it' sthe nicest one and not at all grainy

When eating in a defecit it is hard to consume enough protein to protect muscle, so people supplement, on top of a healthy diet.

foreversunshine · 25/02/2026 15:18

I'm not a fan of it in food, just as a shake with milk. I can't mentally adjust to having it with water < boak > I have a shake for breakfast on the mornings I'm in the office, as I don't have time for a 'proper' brekkie and I find a protein shake fills me up until lunchtime.

It really does vary greatly between brands. Some are, I'm sure, 60% sawdust.
I'll need to check what brand it is I have at home; it's yummy. I'll return with a recommendation later.

Beekman · 25/02/2026 15:19

I can’t always eat as much protein as I need, my appetite is very restricted, so I sometimes have a protein shake to make the numbers up. They’re not the tastiest things in the world but they’re alright and don’t spoil any of my other food, like the powders would.

bloodredfeaturewall · 25/02/2026 15:24

look at the sweetener ingredient
I dislike stevia but can tolerate other sweeteners.

Mothersruin123 · 25/02/2026 15:24

You could try clear whey protein which you dissolve in water and it makes more of a cordial type drink?

I don’t think it’s hard at all. Fair enough sometimes i
fall short but in the main, food is enough.

Personally I get my protein from food, but if it's not an option for you and/or you prefer drinks, try clear protein: https://www.myprotein.com/p/sports-nutrition/clear-whey-protein-powder/12081395/?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=GBP&shippingcountry=GB&variation=12081396&affil=thgppc&kwds=&thg_ppc_campaign=22237945117&adtype=pla_with_promotion&product_id=12081396&cq_src=google_ads&cq_cmp=22237945117&cq_con=&cq_term=&cq_med=pla_with_promotion&cq_plac=&cq_net=x&cq_plt=gp&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22237976584&gbraid=0AAAAADuhnyGALYW_z9hTlvZVxVTjIQ0WK&gclid=CjwKCAiA2PrMBhA4EiwAwpHyC4bkuUIXgn2sgAqjaUgcLcs6sksuwSGPqgMvc0R97F5NhPoqJg6pYhoCzFUQAvD_BwE

It tastes just like squash. When I used to use powders etc. I much preferred this to chocolate/vanilla etc., which I also think are really sweet and artificial tasting

Clear Whey Protein Powder | Myprotein

Our Clear Whey Protein Powder is a light, juice-like protein drink made from hydrolysed whey protein isolate - a tasty, fruity alternative to a shake.

I cannot stomach the volume of protein in supposed to eat for my weight. It's just too much.

I use clear whey as well but only occasionally and only in lieu of lunch or similar in a pinch! It's just like squash but you feel weirdly full afterwards.

I can't abide the milkshake style shakes or 99% of protein laced sweet stuff like the yoghurts, desserts and what not - they are always bloody chocolate or salted caramel (boak) and never strawberry, lemon or something fruity.

Protein pancakes, however, are brilliant.

Perimenoanti · 25/02/2026 16:33

The raspberry vanilla one from my protein is decent. The flavour mix almost completely overpowers the sweetener taste. And i am picky. All the other my protein flavours I have tried made me gag.

Congratulations on your superior life choices.

Meanwhile, some of us use protein powder because it’s convenient and calorie efficient. It’s not a fascination, nor is it a WLI cult, we all obviously know real food exists, we don't think protein powders are magic, it is just a short cut when we need a top up.

Meanwhile, to answer the OPs actual question - I have My Vegan clear protein (I'm not Vegan just prefer the taste - when my son got a free sample through). It is just a top up 15g and makes 1L of daily water a little less boring.

butternut123 · 25/02/2026 18:02

I use this collagen powder that’s essentially really high in protein Bovine Collagen Powder 500g | 50... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C8NRHCRT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

i was actually looking for protein powder and I got this one as it kills two birds with one stone. It has zero taste and I put it in my coffee and yoghurt etc daily. Bonus my hair is super shiny too!

IsItSnowing · 25/02/2026 18:13

I use myprotein vegan powder. It's ok. Generally their products are decent value and taste.
I also prefer to get my protein from food but it's not always possible when you don't want to eat. I tend to have a shake for breakfast as I can't face food that early.
With the protein powder, make sure it is super well mixed. I use one of those bottles with the metal mixer thing in it but a blender is better. Just mixing it isn't enough.

TragicMuse · 25/02/2026 18:26

I don’t like the flavoured ones, they’re far too sweet. Same for the clear drinks.

I currently have myprotein vegan unflavoured powder, it is still a bit grainy. I’ve tried adding it to just yogurt and that was deeply unpleasant. Hideous texture, taste, everything. But it works well in a smoothie with yogurt, frozen fruits, a bit of other flavourings such as vanilla. And I add extra egg white and some collagen. It’s a decent breakfast to see me through to lunch and beyond.

I’m going back to the whey one though, when this packet is finished, it’s smoother.

PearlsTeapot · 25/02/2026 18:58

I’m another who likes the clear My Protein powder that you just add to water. 20g protein for 100 calories, I love the raspberry lemonade and DW likes the peach iced tea (which we always get in Costco). They do a mixed sample box which is great, 10 sachets of different flavours so you can try them out. They also sell them in Tesco now.

I use a different brand, but also use collagen powder rather than protein powder. I also add soya beans and/or nuts to my lunchtime salads which helps a bit too.

Left to my own devices, I’d have carbs with carbs on top.

It depends how you define 'what you need'.
For the minimum, about a g of protein for every kilo you weigh (or should weigh if you're overweight) is quite easy to get, but people doing body recomposition are advised to eat more like a g per 1lb of weight and that's pretty difficult with just food. The powders help some people.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/02/2026 19:07

" naturally want to eat higher carbs, low fat and protein. But I realise that this is what got me to BMI 31"

Are you sure it wasn't eating too many calories?

FatTumNoBum · 25/02/2026 19:31

I can’t eat anything with artificial sweeteners as they give me migraines so I’ve avoided all the fake protein supplements so far as I haven’t found one suitable.

I’m calling them fake as I don’t know what they’re meant to be called when they not actual food? Is there a proper term?

The only protein drink I’ve found so far that tastes nice is an Irish brand milk shake by Clona that contains 16g protein. It’s very creamy tasting. I might have one for breakfast or even dinner if I don’t have time to cook/eat properly.

UnaOfStormhold · 25/02/2026 19:39

I don't like that even the ones without artificial flavour and sweetener are so often full of emulsifiers. Heathy Tree do a powder that is just whey, and I make it up into a smoothie with milk, a little honey, a bit ot almond butter and some cocoa powder or vanilla for flavour.
