Protein powder is repellent

pelagra · 25/02/2026 15:10

I'm trying to up my protein, which goes against the grain. I naturally want to eat higher carbs, low fat and protein. But I realise that this is what got me to BMI 31, so I'm trying to change as I start Wegovy. I cook from scratch all the time, so I've been browsing food websites and cookery books.

I found several recipes with vanilla protein powder, and bought some from Lidl. It is absolutely foul. Grainy, artificial tasting and sweetened. A perfect way to ruin an innocent bowl of porridge and fruit. I can't imagine why anyone would want to consume it.

I've also tried natural hemp protein powder. The flavour is better, but there is still a nasty texture to anything I add it to, and of course it turns everything olive green.

Should I accept this isn't for me, or is there a better version I could try?

"Unless you're a body builder it's unnecessary."

Aren't we all supposed to be building muscles after 40 now? Or at least maintaining it if losing weight? That's the usual advice anyway.
I don't really agree about peanut butter being a good source of protein.

Just because you drive a car... Doesn't make you an F1 driver.

To another who doesn't give a fuck about upf.. if you don't change what you eat and your habits, your treating the jab like a silver bullet and don't be surprised if you can it back when you come off it.

No but peanut butter on toast is a complete protein for vegetarians.

I cook from scratch for every single meal.

If I have a monthly ham and cheese toasted sandwich, I don't care if the ham, cheese and bread are UPF.

If I occasionally have a protein whey drink to take to work for lunch, I don't care it's UPF.

If I have a weighed and measured snack portion of biscuits or crisps or dried fruit or something like that, I don't care that it's UPF.

Calories in and calories out according to lots of the naysayers isn't it? Now it's only the correct calories. Can't let those fatties have access to anything except raw lettuce and tomatoes.....

Yikes. Personally I'd only include the crisps biscuits and protein powder as upf out of your list, but maybe maybe delve deeper into your all or nothing thinking.

Where did the 120g of protein a day mentioned in pp come from? That’s crazy amounts. 0.75-1g / kilo is plenty unless doing serious weight training/body building.

Neemi1201 · 27/02/2026 12:07

I mix chocolate flavoured 'Gold Standard Whey' powder with fage greek yoghurt, peanut butter and add blueberries for breakfast. It keeps me going until lunchtime as long as I have a small snack in between - a banana or similar. If I didn't put the powder in, it wouldn't keep me feeling as full for as long.

What do you think protein powder is made from?

Lots of E numbers probably. 🤔

Anything that has to be reconstituted with liquid isn’t real food is it, because it must have been modified in some way with extra ingredients that are mostly artificial?

It’s not simply freeze dried food like raisons?

Or are we now expecting to eat astronaut food?

I have to be so careful reading ingredients lists because virtually everything with additives makes me quite ill.

I’m amazed and grateful that I can tolerate low dose MJ to be honest.

Sloelydoesit · 27/02/2026 19:03

Thanks for the link to the bovine stuff. I ordered and yes, tastes of nothing!

May my protein intake be higher and my turkey neck improve 😂

BluTangClan · 27/02/2026 22:23

I get the unflavoured whey protein from MyProtein when it's on offer (which is about every other week).
I didn't like the taste of the sweeteners in the flavoured ones.

And does this really taste of nothing?

It doesn't taste particularly pleasant just mixed with milk. But it doesn't have all the other stuff they put in the flavoured ones. I have it in porridge with berries, seeds and peanut butter (and a banana if i've got any).

It's just whey (from milk) or pea protein.

Your not reconsitituting it. Your just mixing it with a liquid to make it drinkable. It can go in food too.

This is what's in my unflavoured protein powder.

  • Whey Protein Concentrate (Milk)
  • Emulsifier (Sunflower Lecithin).
Aluna · 28/02/2026 09:33

I have a protein shake every morning -

Spirulina (which you will hate) barley grass, wheat grass, pea protein powder (which don’t taste of anything), bovine collagen (ditto). I sometimes use ground almonds or shelled hemp. The latter does not turn anything green and has a pleasant flavour.

Aluna · 28/02/2026 09:36

Another favourite shake is 1 banana, some peanut butter, ground cacao nibs, almond milk.

You can add date powder to sweeten if you need it; or shelled hemp or pea protein to make it thicker.

It's what's being advised to people wanting to do body recomposition (changing fat into muscle) or building/keeping muscle. I don't know if it's 'crazy', but it's certainly impossible for me.

How can I get 120 g of protein being vegetarian?

ChatGPT :
Getting 120 g of protein as a vegetarian is absolutely doable — it just requires intentional food choices and spreading protein across meals.

Below is a simple, practical way to hit ~120 g/day without crazy portions.

🥣 Option 1: Lacto-Vegetarian (includes dairy)
Breakfast (~30 g)
250 g Greek yogurt → 25 g

20 g chia/hemp seeds → 5 g

Lunch (~35 g)
150 g cooked lentils → 12 g

150 g tofu → 18 g

Veg + whole grains → ~5 g

Snack (~25 g)
Protein smoothie:

1 scoop whey or plant protein → 22–25 g

Soy milk (250 ml) → 7 g
(You can adjust amounts to stay near 25 g total)

Dinner (~30 g)
200 g cottage cheese (paneer) → 24 g

Quinoa (1 cup cooked) → 8 g

Total: ~120–130 g

HTH

It might help someone, but not me because the calories aren't listed and it involves combinations I wouldn't have like tofu AND lentils AND whole grains in the same meal (assuming that wasn't choose one of them).
