Protein powder is repellent

I'm trying to up my protein, which goes against the grain. I naturally want to eat higher carbs, low fat and protein. But I realise that this is what got me to BMI 31, so I'm trying to change as I start Wegovy. I cook from scratch all the time, so I've been browsing food websites and cookery books.

I found several recipes with vanilla protein powder, and bought some from Lidl. It is absolutely foul. Grainy, artificial tasting and sweetened. A perfect way to ruin an innocent bowl of porridge and fruit. I can't imagine why anyone would want to consume it.

I've also tried natural hemp protein powder. The flavour is better, but there is still a nasty texture to anything I add it to, and of course it turns everything olive green.

Should I accept this isn't for me, or is there a better version I could try?

I’m on mounjaro and in the beginning struggled to hit my protein, it gets easier as you change your habits. I like the myprotein vimto whey powder though and use it when I know I’ve fallen short. I don’t like milk/ or milk shakes so protein shakes make me want to vomit. I can tolerate eating yogurt and cottage cheese and those have been better alternatives especially at breakfast. Porridge (made with water) with cottage cheese, blueberries and raspberries is a favourite.

Top purchase is an egg boiler and I keep a batch of boiled eggs in the fridge to snack on pre and post work out.

good luck on your journey!

I only ever found 1 that doesn’t have artificial sweeteners or stevia, I’m intolerant to all of them and they taste vile. The one I used to get was Solgar Whey to Go strawberry. It hasn’t been available in the UK for ages, used to use Iherb but they stopped delivering to the UK. I stopped bothering in the end.

SexyFrenchDepression · 25/02/2026 20:19

I use this and u love the flavours. I stick collagen and creatine powder in there also.

SexyFrenchDepression · 25/02/2026 20:21

It often gets bad pressure due to how its sold but Herbalife shakes actually have a good texture and taste better than most powders you mix at home. They are good for overnight oats, pancakes etc also.

I prefer the ready made shakes as they just taste like milkshake.

Protein Works were awful, so powdery and sweet, I have a sweet tooth but I couldn't stomach them.

FlyingPi · 25/02/2026 20:22

I don't eat meat so it's quite hard to get to 80g protein a day. I have a shake called Sunwarrior a couple of times a week, usually after the gym, to make sure that I meet the target that day. It's got a chocolate flavour but I add a banana and usually some frozen spinach and chia seeds as well, just chuck it all in the blender with ice and it's quite nice. Obviously real food is better and I wouldn't drink it every day but as a boost on top of beans and pulses etc it really helps.
Another thing you can boost protein with is Skyr yoghurt. Not the ultra processed ones with flavourings, just plain, chuck in some fruit. It's really quite high in protein, a couple of dollops will get you about 10g.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 25/02/2026 20:29

Try My Protein, I really like a scoop of their vanilla protein powder in my overnight oats and the chocolate one is delicious mixed with skyr yogurt and with berries.

I used to intermittent fast so never ate breakfast but now I’m at maintenance I aim to only fast twice a week and do enjoy overnight oats with water, yogurt, protein powder and fruit for breakfast.

Whyherewego · 25/02/2026 20:29

Plant based protein is quite hard to stomach IMHO so I go for whey. We all like Myprotein range and we usually get the natural chocolate or natural vanilla flavours. I find these taste good in a shake blended with frozen fruits or a banana and some milk. My Dsis likes the clear whey ones with peach tea flavour but I really dont.
I would say definitely decent brands so sorry Lidl! And definitely my view is simple flavour if you can take a shake style drink. I have also done coffee shakes with milk and an espresso shot and rhat works too !

Eta seems a few PP recommend myprotein too. I think they do trial size flavours so maybe try those ?

spicysalad · 25/02/2026 20:35

Another vote for Myprotein, I like the clear whey ones, really easy to drink

Congratulations on your superior life choices.

Meanwhile, some of us use protein powder because it’s convenient and calorie efficient. It’s not a fascination, nor is it a WLI cult, we all obviously know real food exists, we don't think protein powders are magic, it is just a short cut when we need a top up.

Meanwhile, to answer the OPs actual question - I have My Vegan clear protein (I'm not Vegan just prefer the taste - when my son got a free sample through). It is just a top up 15g and makes 1L of daily water a little less boring.

Not trying to be superior. I’m using Mounjaro like everyone else. My life choices have been abysmal. I’m really sorry if it came across as me trying to be superior but that absolutely wasn’t my intention. I just read so much about people eating very little and taking on lots of protein products which can be a worry. I know everyone isn’t the same but I didn’t think there was harm in mentioning food should be the first place to look for our nutrition/

again I apologise for coming across badly, it really isn’t what I intended

This is the sample box, I really recommend it www.myprotein.com/p/sports-nutrition/clear-protein-variety-pack-10-servings/14915129/

Its a decent price too, I have some tubs but keep stocking up on the variety packs as I am so lazy haha!

You can't get too much protein. I found that the shake I sometimes drink helps me feel fuller and quite satisfied on days with stronger cravings. They help me stay on track. So much actually that i have considered using them as a quick and effective snack forever.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 25/02/2026 20:57

The raspberry and white chocolate one from Protein.com is gorgeous. It tastes like melted raspberry ripple ice cream.

I have used them for many years, in particular when I did very high intensity training. It has so many benefits, it really improved my performance moving to a high protein diet.

I used the clear whey either for breakfast or if I have had something else for breakfast I often have them just before a meal, it helps with water intake also.

Oh yes I used to add the bare biology collagen to mine, tasted great!

Mintearo7 · 25/02/2026 21:29

Not a fan either but sometimes I have DH’s protein powder - if I have half a scoop (full scoop too much for me), with Greek yoghurt, peanut butter, a splash of milk and fruit, it tastes pretty nice.

GreenLemonade · 25/02/2026 21:29

I like collagen powder, it has very little taste. I add it to my coffee twice a day and get 25g of protein that way.

Aliceisagooddog · 25/02/2026 21:41

It really is all a scam. Just eat more eggs, meat etc. Its totally UPF and unnecessary.

Because I'm a fat knacker, that would mean 31 eggs per day go hit the protein intake I'm apparently supposed to be consuming.

Or a 600g portion of chicken. Or 750g steak.

Or over 2kg of Skyr yoghurt.

Apart from making me feel fucking ill, I couldn't afford that.

I rarely make the protein level I should because I can't stomach it. Getting an extra 40g protein into my system with a drink that is like squash is an excellent solution.

I don't give a shit about UPFs.

Purpleandredandyellow · 25/02/2026 21:51

The only way I can take it is in a very milky coffee

Aliceisagooddog · 25/02/2026 21:52

But what on earth is your protein goal? Incredibly high protein goals are being pushed by the 'health' food industry. If you truly want to care for your body eat natural food not processed crap. This is why stomach cancers are surging everywhere.

Mate, I started off at 22 stone. I have bigger things to worry about. As do many of us.

Fair enough. But I do want people to understand that it's a hyped and unnecessary for most people. We've survived for generations without such fads.
