The extra dose of Mounjaro

I'm really excited to start what I hope is my LAST weightloss journey and just on day 2.

I have heard about this extra dose at the end of MJ - and advice on what you all did for taking it? I'd like to save some money if it's just sitting there in the pen.

I have read that the extra dose is the same as the standard dose of 2.5mg.

At the 5th week, are you all taking the extra 2.5mg?

I looked at breaking the pen which looks easy enough, but I don't have any extra needles so will need to buy..? Or get a syringe...?

What sort of syringe would I need or ask for to buy from the chemist to get it out? (in the UK?)

@LoobyScot If you get 1ml insulin syringes they will come with fixed needles already on them, the ones linked further down the thread for example. The exception to that is if you get the Luer Lock type syringes, they don't have fixed needles so you get separate Luer Lock compatible needles that then screw onto the syringe. That enables you to change the needle after extracting the medication, before you then inject.

To extract the medication you insert the needle into the red seal at the end of the pen, and then draw out the medication. It can be resistant due to the vacuum in the pen. To help with this, you can draw air into the syringe before inserting it into the seal, then push the air into the pen which will make it easier to extract the medication. Once you've extracted the medication, you then hold it upright and flick to get any air to the top. Push the syringe in until the air is pushed out, and you get a small amount of liquid coming out. Then check the amount you want to inject, and push out any excess liquid. Then inject as you would do with the pen. There may well be YouTube videos that you can find with a quick internet search, I haven't looked for any, and it would depend on how competent you think the person demonstrating is.

Thank you so much for going into that detail. I’ll get them ordered.

rosewater55 · 05/10/2025 19:23

Does this not put contaminated air into the pen?

SilenceInside · 05/10/2025 19:30

@rosewater55 if you’re getting the remaining liquid out for a fifth dose then there will be no medication left afterwards. So it doesn’t matter about air getting into the pen, there’s nothing left to be contaminated.

Ah I was asking as I only want to use needles not the pen, so using it as a vial.

i have a 7.5 pen but only want 2.5 now so my husband and I were going to share using only syringes, otherwise I will be throwing most the pen away!

You don’t have to inject air into the pen, I don’t. There’s quite a bit of resistance because the needles are very narrow but if you draw steadily and slowly, the plunger moves down the pen as you pull fluid out. This avoids anything non-sterile going into the pen

Of course you could just use your 7.5mg pen as normal except doing 20 clicks for your 2.5mg rather than the full 60.

rosewater55 · 06/10/2025 07:07

I did that before but I still threw most the pen away as it would’ve been 3 month old.

so this time going to share with my husband as cost nearly £300!

Jellybeans1234 · 21/10/2025 21:26

I have a pen which is 20mg

Jellybeans1234 · 21/10/2025 21:28

I have weight loss pen manjauro which is 20mg, I don’t ever go up a dose remaining at 2.5 each time. I have recently read that the pen needs to be thrown away after 30days, using 2.5 would last me 8weeks is this safe to do

SilenceInside · 21/10/2025 21:30

Legitimate Mounjaro does not come in 20mg pens. Where are you getting it from, @Jellybeans1234?

No one can say it’s safe to use a pen past the 30 days. The manufacturer will not guarantee the medication to be effective and to be free from contamination/bacteria after that point.

This has just really worried me so been to check, it is classed as a Tirzepatide 20mg pre-filled pen

SilenceInside · 21/10/2025 21:43

Could you post a picture of it? Where did you get it from? The maximum dose strength manufactured by Eli Lilly is 15mg.

Jellybeans1234 · 21/10/2025 21:45

This is the one I have purchased

The extra dose of Mounjaro
SilenceInside · 21/10/2025 21:47

Yep, that’s a fake product, that’s not legitimate Mounjaro from Eli Lilly.

roycroppersshopper · 21/10/2025 21:47

Doesn't look legit to me. Nothing like anything I've ever bought before. Where did you purchase it?

Jellybeans1234 · 21/10/2025 21:55

It is classed as Tirzepatide the manufacturer is VLS vitality life science

Jellybeans1234 · 21/10/2025 21:55

I purchased through one of the sites where you have to input weight bmi etc

SilenceInside · 21/10/2025 21:56

You can find the website that sells it by searching for the name on the packaging. It’s an unauthorised site that’s not regulated by the GPhC. They should not be selling this to people in this way. @Jellybeans1234 I would bin it and get a genuine prescription from a genuine supplier that’s regulated by the GPhC.

It’s not legal to sell this to consumers in the UK. The only legitimate manufacturer is Eli Lilly and you should only get Mounjaro from a GPhC registered pharmacy. Not an online shop, even if they ask what your BMI is.

Jellybeans1234 · 21/10/2025 21:57

So I would need to search Tirzepatide?? What is Gphc please, I am becoming really worried now

Jellybeans1234 · 21/10/2025 22:01

I will dispose of this and do my research for the recommended above. Thank you

Jellybeans1234 · 21/10/2025 22:07

SilenceInside · 21/10/2025 21:59

There is a list of registered pharmacies on the website https://monj.co.uk which are all legitimate.

Thank you
