The extra dose of Mounjaro

I'm really excited to start what I hope is my LAST weightloss journey and just on day 2.

I have heard about this extra dose at the end of MJ - and advice on what you all did for taking it? I'd like to save some money if it's just sitting there in the pen.

I have read that the extra dose is the same as the standard dose of 2.5mg.

At the 5th week, are you all taking the extra 2.5mg?

I looked at breaking the pen which looks easy enough, but I don't have any extra needles so will need to buy..? Or get a syringe...?

What sort of syringe would I need or ask for to buy from the chemist to get it out? (in the UK?)

I managed to get the bonus dose out of my first syringe this week but did seem to be a huge faff ! I wasn't convinced it was coming out of the syringe so ended up injecting myself maybe three times .

I never administer from the pen. I treat the pen like a vial and draw up the medication with an insulin syringe. I get 5 doses from each pen.

I’m assuming that the 8mm needle is double the length of the 4mm needle. If that’s the case, how much of the needle do you have to insert before you start pushing the plunger in the syringe? One of the good things about the pen is how I can barely feel the needle going into my skin as I’m a bit needlephobic so it would be good to know about others experiences.

I have just taken the 5th dose from the Mounjaro Kwikpen. Take an insulin needle attached to the small syringe. Insert the needle into the end of the pen and draw out the Mounjaro, you need to be firm to get the liquid out. Then transfer into a new insulin syringe so that you have a sterile needle. If you are careful when priming the pen on each occasion then you should be left with a full 0.6mm dose. It’s a total waste throwing it away, so if you can get hold of fine needles it’s pretty easy to do.

You don't need to use two needles. You wipe the pen and the injection site with an antiseptic wipe and use the one syringe.

Yes you can use the same needle, I’d rather it was sterile and as sharp as possible though when I inject.

Also draw back your needle to .60 and fill the kwikpen with the air, makes it easier to suck out the liquid. I broke a pen by not doing that and lost half the extra dose 🙃

After 4 lots of 2.5 mg doses I wanted another one out of my Mounjaro pen. I tried the hard twist but the plunger snapped. So with pliers I pull bits of plastic off the end of the pen until I was just down to the cylinder. The contents were not affected or compromised so I inserted a very thin screwdriver which served as a plunger, and I got another dose, Now on 2nd pen 5mg does but I have ordered syringes as suggested. It's working! My appetite has gone down.

Out of curiosity, do suppliers not question why you are ordering every 5 weeks instead of every 4?

I saw a post yesterday saying that their supplier had queried this. I think more will be picking up on it as they impose the stricter regulations.

I'm just about to go to 12.5mg and have never mucked about with the pens. I accept I pay the money for the four doses with extra for priming, and that's it.

I have taken the fifth dose from every pen for the last 13 months.

I am quite an erratic orderer as I’m self employed so just order when I have spare money and either have several pens in the fridge or none!! I do make sure I order within 6 weeks of my last one but no pharmacy has ever questioned my timings.

I had to take a break for non-Mounjaro related medical reasons and resumed at the starter dose, having been on 5mg. I have had some weight loss, but was still getting food noise so have used the bonus dose to go up to 5ml on my fourth week.
I did it in two shots, the syringe stopped pulling back at 50 (0.5ml) so used that to do one dose — after tapping and squeezing out a little to remove any air. And then repeated for the second, which provided around 0.2ml — so it was a fraction over a 5mg dose.
The difference between mg and ml on the pens and syringes can be confusing, but just remember that a Mounjaro pen dose is 0.6ml of liquid

the trick to overcoming the vacuum suck back is simple… draw 0.7-8 of air into the empty syringe before inserting needle into pen. Very slowly push the air into the pen. You will meet some resistance as you go as it’s pushing the plunger slightly. When you then extract the liquid will flow out no bother. You will have a bit of air bubbles but usual method of tapping to top and priming works and tiny bubbles are of no danger subcutaneously.

My supplier (MedExpress) never has. I’ve been using Mounjaro for 9 months - have used the 5th dose via a syringe since the first pen, and sometimes go 6 weeks between orders.

they send me a few ‘don’t forget’ texts but no issues.

I’m now on a 10mg pen but I’m only taking 8.5mg from it while I build up, so expect this one to last me at least 6 weeks.

really helpful. Can I ask what you do about needles for these syringes?

Is there any way to see how this is done? And where to get the right needles in order to attach to the syringes? Anyone posted anything on a YouTube link for example? I’m sure it’s straightforward once I know what I’m doing but just want to be super careful I’m following all these great suggestions.
