The extra dose of Mounjaro

I'm really excited to start what I hope is my LAST weightloss journey and just on day 2.

I have heard about this extra dose at the end of MJ - and advice on what you all did for taking it? I'd like to save some money if it's just sitting there in the pen.

I have read that the extra dose is the same as the standard dose of 2.5mg.

At the 5th week, are you all taking the extra 2.5mg?

I looked at breaking the pen which looks easy enough, but I don't have any extra needles so will need to buy..? Or get a syringe...?

What sort of syringe would I need or ask for to buy from the chemist to get it out? (in the UK?)

I have just ordered a 7.5mg from this pharmacy, so will let you know what delivery is like (on time, chilled etc) and which type of pen is delivered (new 4 dose or regular 4+1 extra dose). Prices look good though.

I've thrown the old one away now but when I first got the new one and lined them up next to each other, there was less in the new one.

I hope I am wrong though. That extra dose definitely helped price wise

What's the expiry date on your new pen @aniloD?

Top one is my 7.5mg unused (EXP 01/2027)

Bottom one is my 5mg after 2 doses (EXP 02/2027)

Not 100% sure but I think the plunger on the 5mg was further down than the one on the 7.5mg.

Either way, definitely only 2 doses left on the 5mg so no extra dose. 😔

The 7.5mg pen arrived yesterday.

Dispensed and dispatched 03/11/2025. Arrived 05/11/2025.

Well packaged. Packaging was discreet. Shipped in the standard woolpack with the ice bag. Arrived cold. Package contained 5 pen needles. Expiry date on pen was 12/2026.

When I compared the pen with my current 5mg and other 7.5mg that I have, it looked the same.

This got me thinking about the “Extra Dose” and why I thought my current 5mg pen looked like it didn’t have the “Extra Dose”. I checked the dates of my injections and have now realised that I have had 3 doses from the 5mg pen, on 19th, 26th and then last week on the 2nd.

This means I have my last official dose this Sunday, the 9th and it looks like there will still be an “Extra Dose” left in the pen for the following week. I will know for certain when I use this week’s dose and then pen stops me from re-priming it.

Yes, that looks perfectly like a normal pen after one dose has been taken.

As you can see from those drawings, the reduced dose pens have a shorter glass section. That photo from @aniloD looks vey much like a dose has been taken from a normal size pen. I was relieved to see you had miscounted your doses from your pen as it looked very much like a normal pen 👍🏻
For what it’s worth, I have a pen with an 03/27 expiry which absolutely has 5 doses.

@HappyWineDay thank you for letting me know. I will confirm 100% this weekend, but I am 99% sure you are right. Hopefully I will be able to do a few tandem orders to build up a bit of "stock" before the new pen is released.

@HappyWineDay So I took my next dose and I can confirm you were right, it was the last dose from my pen, and it still has the extra dose (see image).

This means that both the 7.5mg pens I have ordered have the extra dose.

12.5mg - £249
15mg - £269

Might be on the box or patient leaflet. I've definitely seen that and used it to calculate the bonus dose
