Sudden Hip Pain - Side Effect Of Mounjaro??

Ed31 · 07/01/2025 12:29

I’m 8 weeks into Mounjaro, actually Friday will be my 9th week. Compared to most I’ve been a slow loser having lost 1stone in this time whereas others I’ve seen on YouTube have lost 2 stone or more in the same time scale.

Anyway… Sunday I noticed a pain in my right side in the hip area which is odd for me having never experienced hip pain before, yesterday Monday though the pain has got more intense to the point it’s difficult getting in & out of bed, putting on my boxers, socks, jeans, shoes etc, getting up off a chair & even getting in & out of my car is quite awkward & quite uncomfortable, it’s all very odd 🤔

I typed into Google Mounjaro & Hip pain just to check, and while there’s not much info out there to connect the two I did come across a couple of discussions where people on Mounjaro had similar problems which got so bad they had to cease taking the Mounjaro… I really don’t want this to be a problem for me but if this is a side effect I may have to end my journey, as I’ve felt so good on Mounjaro I’m trying to tell myself there’s another reason for it, but I can’t think of anything else that I’ve done to be causing this, and the fact it’s something I’ve never ever experienced before, therefore I wondered if anyone else has encountered anything similar?

I’ve been for a 1.47 mile walk yesterday & a 2.7 mile this morning with some limping as I walk so it’s not making me totally inoperable but still very concerning when I’m struggling to get undressed / dressed & struggling getting in or out of bed etc, somethings not right & I’m worried it’s going to get worse…

Everyone talks of all the usual side effects which we should all really know about before we commence Mounjaro, it always surprises me when I see people reaching out because they feel bloated or have burps, but to have something like this is a whole different game & not something I’ve heard of? Hoping it’s not Mounjaro related but I can’t think of anything else that I’ve done to trigger this issue 🤔

Can you think of anything else (eg exercise) that could have caused it?

My hip pain went with MJ, but not sure if that's due to losing weight or the drug itself.

FlappingMadly · 07/01/2025 13:41

Have you started a new exercise?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 07/01/2025 14:12

Flu?

Doggymummar · 07/01/2025 14:14

Talk to your provider and they will be able to advise. We are not medically trained. It sounds odd to me but that's only cos I've not had it.

No nothing, it’s very strange, never suffered with any kind of hip pain before, if it’s something else I’m not too bothered, my concern is that it’s related to Mounjaro…

I was just reaching out incase anyone else had experienced similar, reluctant to take it up with my provider as I know they stop the medication at the slightest abnormality & then you have to fight to try to get a new prescription.

No definitely not flue, other than the hip pain I feel great, better than I have done pre Mounjaro 👍🏻

Report it to your prescriber. Not only because you should for you, but because this is how side effects are noted in larger populations than clinical trials.

Hmm. I’m not sure, I’ve noticed a tendency foe worry single thing someone suffers when on mounjaro folks think it is the drug, Like they expect to have no new ailments when on it, naturally. It’s odd

op. I’d assume it’s the walking, you’ve pulled something, I can’t imagine a glp drug impacting your hips

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/01/2025 17:37

The reason to report @Gettingslimmer is so they can determine. You're just reporting a symptom. This is how rare side effects are caught.

Could be nothing. Or it could be a rare effect.

Correlation or causation! That's for the professionals to decide.

Yes but some common sense has to be applied. If everyone reports every single ailment that befalls them when taking the drug the outcome will be utter nonsense,

Further to my last post I’ve barely slept over the past two nights. I can’t get comfortable due to the pain. Had hoped it would clear up but it’s got progressively worse to the point I can barely get myself out of a chair or in or out of bed.

As I said previously I found posts elsewhere describing similar issues (see screenshots) My 9th week jab is due today but think I won’t be taking it sadly just incase it is related.

I keep telling myself it’s not the Mounjaro but I’ve done nothing to cause this issue & know somethings not right.

Once I’m up on my feet I can walk with some discomfort but it’s not too bad, have been doing 2.7mile walks most of this week, which would make you think I’m fine wouldn’t you? But then when I sit down I can barely get up again, it takes an age & is a real effort, also I’m unable to get my socks on & my boxers on due to the pain.

Was thinking it might be a trapped nerve or even sciatica? The pain is sudden & jarring when it hits you & takes your breath away. Had I not read the posts in the screenshots I wouldn’t have suspected the Mounjaro, It’s just bizarre.

Not at this stage no for reasons I’ve stated previously.

So OP you haven't been to doc? I would be wary of self confirming online evidence. It could be a trapped nerve, anything.

12purplepencils · 09/01/2025 07:18

I have had l more joint pain including hip, over the last 6 months since taking MJ but it’s hard to know if that’s just my age/hormones/perimenopause, and it is manageable for me.

i think you’re only going to know if you take a break and it gets better?

alternatively you could see a physio or osteopath privately to see if it’s anything mechanical. Let’s face it GP is not going to be able to do much, referral for a scan or whatever would take months.

Hoping to get a doctors appointment today but not holding out a great deal of hope. Have also contacted Physio to see if I can get in with them privately.

It could just be a trapped nerve or sciatica but I’m suspect of that as I’ve lost weight & also been active with no issues, done absolutely nothing to trigger anything like that…

Everything I’m experiencing ties up with the comments in the screenshots I’ve posted.

Stop the injections for a few weeks and see if the pain lessens. And then you have your answer? Do you inject into the thigh? Could injecting in abdomen only be an option if it’s a localised reaction rather than a systemic one?

Yes agreed I’m not taking my dose that’s due today annoyingly. Agree doctor won’t be much help either probably just send me off with some pain killers. Hoping I can get in with physio so hopefully they can look into what might be going on. Non of this makes any sense to me at all. 🤔😵‍💫

I've had the complete opposite.
Have had severe hip pain for a couple of years, seen dr, had x-rays, seen physio, and am actually due a steroid injection in my hip due to the inflammation.
I've just completed my first week on mj, and realised yesterday I have no pain. Nothing. not even a twinge. No limping, I can lie on that side in bed again, I can climb stairs properly, it's incredible.
Hope you manage to get an appointment.

NippyNinjaCrab · 09/01/2025 08:24

It could be your increase in activity that's aggravating your hip joint, look back over your journey and note down what you've done. Lower back problems can cause hip pain, could be a trapped nerve, an irritated disc, can you explain your pain? I have extensive lower back, hip and leg problems and being more active with MJ and carrying less weight has made my hips grumble. X

Ed31 · 09/01/2025 08:24

That’s good, they say the Mounjaro has an anti inflammatory effect, that’s why none of this makes sense.

OP posts:
NippyNinjaCrab · 09/01/2025 08:27

Ps get some anti inflammatory gel from the pharmacy, explain your extreme pain, there's a 10% one you can get. Rub that on your hip, also ice it. Keep moving in moderation, sitting for prolonged periods will annoy it. Hopefully it eases soon.

It makes sense if it is not the drug, simply you have pulled a muscle or nerve or it’s sciatic. However you seem determined to beleive it can only be the drug.

FlappingMadly · 09/01/2025 09:00

I find it ridiculous that increase in activity and weight loss changing motion is not considered the likely culprit. Maybe is MJ but let's be sensible.
