Sudden Hip Pain - Side Effect Of Mounjaro??

Ed31 · 07/01/2025 12:29

I’m 8 weeks into Mounjaro, actually Friday will be my 9th week. Compared to most I’ve been a slow loser having lost 1stone in this time whereas others I’ve seen on YouTube have lost 2 stone or more in the same time scale.

Anyway… Sunday I noticed a pain in my right side in the hip area which is odd for me having never experienced hip pain before, yesterday Monday though the pain has got more intense to the point it’s difficult getting in & out of bed, putting on my boxers, socks, jeans, shoes etc, getting up off a chair & even getting in & out of my car is quite awkward & quite uncomfortable, it’s all very odd 🤔

I typed into Google Mounjaro & Hip pain just to check, and while there’s not much info out there to connect the two I did come across a couple of discussions where people on Mounjaro had similar problems which got so bad they had to cease taking the Mounjaro… I really don’t want this to be a problem for me but if this is a side effect I may have to end my journey, as I’ve felt so good on Mounjaro I’m trying to tell myself there’s another reason for it, but I can’t think of anything else that I’ve done to be causing this, and the fact it’s something I’ve never ever experienced before, therefore I wondered if anyone else has encountered anything similar?

I’ve been for a 1.47 mile walk yesterday & a 2.7 mile this morning with some limping as I walk so it’s not making me totally inoperable but still very concerning when I’m struggling to get undressed / dressed & struggling getting in or out of bed etc, somethings not right & I’m worried it’s going to get worse…

Everyone talks of all the usual side effects which we should all really know about before we commence Mounjaro, it always surprises me when I see people reaching out because they feel bloated or have burps, but to have something like this is a whole different game & not something I’ve heard of? Hoping it’s not Mounjaro related but I can’t think of anything else that I’ve done to trigger this issue 🤔

I'm waiting on back surgery but it can't be that

I'm waiting on back surgery but it can't be that

It isn’t out of the question as pain can be referred. Pain due to a hip problem can be felt in the knee and I think back pain can on occasion be felt in hip.

Thank you I'm seeing my surgeon soon so I'll ask

Hi! How is the pain now OP?

Well I've been searching for hip and thigh pain and came across this thread. 7 months after starting mounjaro I've been getting strong hip pain. I thought it was due to muscles needed stretching so did some yoga yesterday and HIIT workout but it's worse today with DOMS on top and I'm sat in agony waiting for ibuprofen to kick in. It's on my left side but a month or so ago it was on my right side and lasted around 5 days before it went. I've not done any exercise in 7 months and I've never experienced hip pain before. I am 43 and bmi 26 so I wonder if it's to do with the weight loss and being a side sleeper because I can feel my hip bones easily now and have less padding generally there with more on my tummy.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Could be a labral tear.

It doesn't make sense to suddenly come out of the blue when I wasn't doing any exercises etc, especially the other side a month ago and now my left side. Yesterday was the only exercises I did in 7 months but I've had this pain before then.

@Histoscientist just a thought, but are you perimenopause/menopausal ? I had hip pain, soreness especially when lying in bed at night, it’s a common menopause problem.
HRT sorted it out for me.

I follow someone who has developed rheumatoid arthritis since starting on Mounjaro. He had no problems until he had been on it about 3 months, then started with hip pain which spread to his feet, keees, elbows & hands. He stopped it after having to be admitted to hospital & having lots of fluid drained from his hip joint, it took about 4 months from the first signs for him to be diagnosed.

I went through a period of hip pain, especially in bed at night, I just could not get comfortable so spent a lot of the night tossing and turning, I assumed it was due to significant shift in weight. I tried walking a bit more. It has eased off after a couple of months and is no longer a problem.

No I'm not yet, I'm in early 40s but all fine there and other than two episodes of hip pain lasting around 5 days each around a month apart, I've not had it before. I am a lot bonier having lost a lot of weight than I was before so could be related to that! It seems to be easing off now after ibuprofen thankfully. I do a lot of driving for my work 2-3hrs a day but that's never been an issue before and it's on and off which is strange. I'm on 12.5mg and been on mounjaro since october. It could be hormone related as it was a few days into my period so who knows. It tends to be worse on a morning than night to be honest.

I am currently experiencing very similar issues with pelvic pain and lower back pain. Mainly effected after sitting down for a longer period of time then trying to get back up again its as if you cant weight bare on your pelvis. I've been on MJ for a year and a half and had frequent flare ups. My current flare up has lasted 12 weeks... I think you might be right in that they are related. I have also been telling myself it isn't but doubting it now...

fancytoes · 24/11/2025 21:27

@Ed31may I ask how you’re getting on? I have had mad hip pain at night for the last four weeks. This is also when I started weight training to stands to reason that this is it. But a small part is thinking it’s the jabs…

Threadreplier · 27/11/2025 03:30

I would report it. It could be muscle/fat in the hip area was helping stabilise the joint and the loss of this has caused instability? Any new side effects should be reported. It's how drug labels get reviewed and updated after medications are approved. There's whole teams of people that look at if it's correlation/ causation and if the side effect needs adding to the package insert or not.

garlictwist · 27/11/2025 04:22

Genuine pain from the hip joint is usually felt in the groin. If you’re feeling it more on the outside it’s less likely to be a joint thing and could be muscular or nerve or back related. Hard to say if it’s from the drug though.
