Continuing Mounjaro...part 15

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30. If you have additional health conditions you can get the medication with a BMI 27. (Prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart problems)

Pointers for newbies:
1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Some people find that they don't need to go up a pen dose each month if the current pen dosage is working well for them. If you are unsure when to go up, speak to your prescriber.

8 - The move up from 2.5mg to 5mg can be quite a shock to the system. Some people chose to take 3.75mg dosage for a few weeks to ease the transition.

9 - If you are having bad side effects after titrating up or you are struggling to eat your calories each day, your dose may be too high so should consider lowering your dose. Speak to your prescriber if unsure.

10 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

11 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

12 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB
Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

13 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss.
Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

14 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

15 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

16 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

17 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site
In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

18 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

19 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

21- You will still be prescribed Mounjaro when your BMI falls below 30. However, it may be harder to move suppliers once you BMI is below 30 if you wanted to move.

22 - Worried about your supply being cut off when you get to a healthy BMI? Below is some info on some places maintenance plans.
The Family chemist :Would consult you as approached healthy BMI to discuss maintenance under close supervision(if you started with family chemist)
Curate: up to 2 years
Cloud: up to 2 years
Boots: Cut off at BMI 23

Pharmacy2u: Will supply for maintenance

If you can see my face so be it. I can’t be bothered to scrub it all tbh. If you look at the time frame you will see how much the weight loss slowed. Use the top right bit to see the months. In the last month I’ve only lost 6lbs.

@Melty nearly missed you. Have pm'd you Facebook link

OP posts:
ObsidianTree · 07/07/2024 19:02

@Melty, as you go on I'm sure you will start feeling more hopeful. A lot of us feel it's working so well that we are dreaming of weights that seemed unlikely when we started but now become possible ☺️

Well done for the great first week loss. It is most likely water weight, but losses will happen on MJ, big and small☺️

OP posts:
butterfly0404 · 07/07/2024 19:15

3rd week of 2.5, 4th jab on Friday. Ate out today and only managed 3/4 of a child's portion roast lamb and definitely couldn't face dessert.

I ate less than my 6yr old granddaughter and I'm feeling quite nauseous again.

Definitely going to stay with 2.5 going forward, I just think a higher dose will make me feel even worse.

ObsidianTree · 07/07/2024 19:24

For those that I've sent a Facebook link to and it's not worked, apparently they link stops working after 13 use it and I can't get a new link for 45 hours!

So I will get new links to those that it didn't work for.

If the link I sent you didn't work, just reply to my pm you need a new one and I will send when it's renewed

I'm currently with Zava who have been great, and I've still got some discount codes to use, but I think I'll swap to Curate as I've heard they are more accommodating once you've maintained... can anyone back that up? Do you know if there are any current codes for Curate please? I'll be looking at getting 10mg

BellaCriesAndThatsAlright · 07/07/2024 19:32

For anyone waiting for MedExpress - my prescription has just been authourized. On a Sunday! Hopefully I will get it soon.

camerontucker · 07/07/2024 19:35

Please don't leave all of us without Facebook behind. Read this thread at least five times a day, don't want you all to disappear. Down a stone. Happy days 🙌🏻.

ObsidianTree · 07/07/2024 19:51

Dont worry @camerontucker this Mumsnet thread is a lot busier than the Facebook group☺️

Sorry if this has been meant before but just read the AIBU thread where the OP suggests Labour makes weight loss injections available on the NHS. I feel so triggered I’m almost having a panic attack! So much misinformation and judgement 😭

I hit 1 stone 3/4 this weekend !
SW 15’10
CW 13 13
GW 13

I started at the beginning of April - had a brilliant first 2 months just on 2.5mg . Then I’ve had nausea and reflux . I thought it was the drug but actually I was just worried about my son being bullied.
Now it’s the end of term , I feel much better. Moved onto 5mg a week ago and the last few stubborn lb of this stone has gone. Feels great to have weight beginning with 13.

I’m still wearing size 18 clothing but my clothes are looser and definitely more comfortable and elegant.
I will be so excited if I can fit into some of the great size 16 dresses I have put away.

Great tip to share… clear out of your wardrobe the clothes that don’t fit. It’s a joy to be able to open a wardrobe and choose from clothes that look and feel good.

Swiftlygoesit · 07/07/2024 20:11

So inspiring to read these losses! I thought I’d add my own.

Today I’ve hit 10kg after 5 weeks on 2.5mg. To be fair, my initial weight was on a Sunday evening after a big weekend and the total loss is based on first morning weigh in but I’m taking it!

I started 5mg on Friday night, with a bit of trepidation but so far so good. Suppression is strong but I can eat, but now finding I can do a 14-16 hour fast which is great.

@FlappyFish it was really helpful reading your record. One of your weights is my starting weight and you’ve got to my goal so it makes it feel so real. Thank you!

I made a spreadsheet to calculate weight loss in lbs/kilos over time. I've only put in my weekly weight, not the daily weigh ins. It means I don't have to find a website to calculate kilos/lbs/stones.

It won't upload my picture 😥

Sassenach85 · 07/07/2024 21:18

Does anybody find they dramatically lose suppression mid week? I am contemplating splitting my dose at some point in the future. I feel like after 3-4 days I can feel the food noise burst in. And I am eating bigger portions etc

pinktransit · 07/07/2024 21:22

Excel sheet - I put in the date, my st/lb/oz weight, (cols a-d) and it does all the rest for me :)

Would love to set up something similar.

Formula in E (don't actually need it, but I like words as well as numbers 😀)
=INT((B2 14 + C2 + D2 / 16) / 14) & " stones, " & MOD(INT(B2 14 + C2 + D2 / 16), 14) & " pounds, and " & ROUND(MOD((B2 14 + C2 + D2 / 16) 16, 16), 1) & " ounces"

F: =B2 * 14 + C2 + D2 / 16

G: =F3-F2

H: =F2*0.453592

Hope that makes sense :)

I’m so sorry about your son. I hope next year is better for him and this holiday is a break for him.

I agree about clothing sizes. I have got rid of everything that is too big for me. Some I sold, my 2 fave dresses I sent to a fellow MJ mums better and the rest have gone to charity shops. I opened my wardrobe tonight and it’s weird that everything in it just… fits.

There are no guilt inducing clothes and no ‘ahhh I loved wearing this’ clothes. It all just fits. It’s so weird.

Fist bonus dose done...managed to get just under 0.75 using an insulin syringe so if my maths is right I make that a 3.12ml (ish) dose.

Hopefully will be ok on the slightly higher dose ...will need to do my first 5ml one day later as I have an all day meeting with 3hrs each way travelnext Monday and really don't want side effects to hit then if I get any

Edited

How do you mean "do your first 5ml one day later"? Do you mean a day later than it would be due the following week? Hopefully not one day after your bonus dose as that would not be a good idea
