Continuing Mounjaro... Thread 12

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

I was due to order the 10mg this week and as there had been a lot on the chat about Medexpress and no discount codes I thought about switching, and then the lazy part of my brain kicked in and I just clicked ‘re-order’. However that was Tuesday and it’s still not been dispatched, when usually it’s pretty quick. I think it’s a sign this is my last order with them !

KrankyKumquat · 06/06/2024 14:40

spottydogsarethebest · 06/06/2024 14:10

My mother also was incredibly controlling around food, honestly wonder if that is partly why I'm in the mess I am.

Oh I'm sure it has a lot to do with my issues with food. She took me to a dietician when I was 8 who put me on a banana and milk diet (can you believe that? It was the 1970s).I weighed 8 stone but was very tall and extremely sporty. When I look at photos from back then, I most definitely wasn't fat, just well-built. She'd feed me crap and sulk or shout if i didn't want it. I can remember having to remain at the table after dinner until I'd eaten everything. I was 11st at age 11 so she really did a job on me and I've now been dieting for 50years.

pinktransit · 06/06/2024 13:19

Thanks for the new thread @ObsidianTree , good to see you back 😀
Was about to order my new pen, then realised I'm heading down to my parents for a week, and don't want to risk it not arriving in time. So will have to wait a week.
Still undecided as to whether to continue with Medexpress, or go off-piste with Zava for the discount code. Or possible both.... will decide over the next few days.

Utterly dreading the parental visit - my mum is an absolute cow about weight.
I'm thinking that I'll just wear a lot of baggy things and hope she won't notice.

The appetite suppression is going to be awesome though - I usually end up taking extra food with me when I stay as they eat at 8am, 12.35, and then sometime around 8.30 ish, by which time I could eat my own arm. They don't snack, all food is carefully accounted for to minimise waste (which is fine, and works for them), and is vegan which I'm not. So I end up secretly snacking, which is ridiculous at my age. The disapproving looks for taking another slice of bread have to be seen to be believed. You can see the thought bubble above her head saying "And that's why you're fat".

Actually, even when I have lost weight in the past she's been mean about it.

Me: Hey Mum, I've lost a stone!
Mum: Such a pity when it doesn't show, isn't it?

Me: Yay, hit my target weight!
Mum: Yes. But remember, a thin elephant isn't a gazelle...

Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant 😂

Fucking hell, I’m so sorry you have to deal with that. How can you not have weight issues if you’ve grown up around that sort of thing. My mother in law is like that about food/weight. It’s a very unhealthy relationship with food but she is stick thin and never misses an opportunity to point it out. She likes to ask to borrow a cardigan and then spends ages telling everyone how huge it is on her. She has a lot of other issues too and as a result I have pretty much no contact with her. You really don’t have to put up with that sort of shit.

do you really have to go there for a whole week?

ObsidianTree · 06/06/2024 14:56

Sorry you have to go through that @pinktransit. Hopefully you won't feel hungry when there!

My mum is a pain also. One of the reasons I wanted to lose weight for good this time is I was getting fed up of her nagging me about dieting. She's been happy now that she's sees I'm losing weight, but she's super critical of my weight. For a peaceful life it's easier to be slim around her!

Boy. Zava has the worst processing times and customer service of my three-large sample. Been well over 72 hours and still says pending.

How are others doing with Zava?

Mine was quite quick changing. As well as the pics asked for, I also send proof of my current dose. So maybe that's the key

I've noticed Family chemist are saying they have 12.5mg in stock now. As do Asda. So I'm sure soon the rest will catch up for those that want 12.5mg

OP posts:
ObsidianTree · 06/06/2024 15:06

Just did a quick look at Zava charges £204 for 12.5mg. Med Express charges £209.99 for 12.5mg. So without discounts Med Express is now not worth it

@DietStartsM0NDAY

There was someone on a previous thread had the same issue with being abroad for some time and Bolt pharmacy were happy to give them 3 months worth.

lurkylurk · 06/06/2024 15:41

@Umeboshiune

They’re probably inundated with people switching over from MedExpress!

Apart from the people posting on here that have you can guarantee there’s many
more that follow these threads but don’t post that have switched too because of us talking about it!

Scalessayeek · 06/06/2024 15:55

Hello everyone just checking in with thread 12 and thought I'd post this lovely info from Reddit.

Hope it's clear enough!

Checking in. Thanks for the new thread.

Someone on Reddit (from US) was asking for solutions for constipation and I posted about taking aloe vera tablets. They replied saying that as far as they knew aloe vera is dangerous to take orally and said this as if it was a known thing in the US

I did a bit of research and it turns out they're correct, aloe vera gel (so long as it contains none of the aloe latex is fine) but aloe latex, which appears to be the part used for constipation may not be due to possible caricinogenicity and possibilty for kidney damage. The same goes for "whole leaf extract". Aloe was disapproved for constipation in the US in 2002, the information regarding it can be found at links below:

https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GOVPUB-HE20-PURL-gpo29875/pdf/GOVPUB-HE20-PURL-gpo29875.pdf

https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-aloe/art-20362267

The ones I had been using (although I have had the opposite problem for the last while!) say they are aloe vera gel extract (which theoretically is fine) and also contain psyllium and various other ingredients, but as this won't necessarily be being checked as aloe of any kind is allowed in the UK it's made me a bit uneasy about using them

My 7th dose is due tomorrow, I'm still taking 2.5. I hit my "holiday weight" mini goal today and I fly tomorrow so I'm delighted. I'm going to try and make sensible choices and not gain on this holiday. Most holidays I tend to overindulge grossly and gain 7lb so I'm determined this time is different. We will see!

Namechangepleas · 06/06/2024 16:38

Hi I've not started mounjaro yet, I've just been approved! When the injections were dispatched I got an information email and it says about the expiry dates being may24?? But that it's okay to take. Has anyone had this?

@Slimstar13 someone did ask med express about the price guarantee and they responded to say they also include needles and sharps bins so that means they are still cheaper. There's a screenshot of the actual response in the last thread

Since I can’t order anymore, I just realised I’m now £190 a month better off.

I've just received my 7.5mg order, however the last week, whilst I have still had some hunger and food noise, not enough that I was eating loads and managed to stay within calories and finally started to see weight loss. Its also the first week I haven't had vomiting, diaharea and nausea so have decided to stay on 5mg for another week or two. Can anyone tell me how many clicks I would need for 5mg. I've seen someone say 1 is 60 clicks, which would be 40 clicks for 5mg but not sure if that is specific to 2.5mg pen?

Muddleofpud · 06/06/2024 17:13

Hello all, been lurking in these threads for a bit but now feel like I want to join in and ask questions. Started Mounjaro 2.5 yesterday, no mega side effects but feeling a bit groggy, very tired and very dry mouth. Appetite definitely decreased, couldn’t manage a fried egg this morning, and am hoping to get some chicken and salad down me later on without tasting it back in my burps every half hour like I have been with yesterdays dinner.
SW 16st
GW Not sure maybe 12 to start.
