Continuing Mounjaro... Thread 12

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

I'm just worried about getting to 15mg and it working for a while and then stopping working and there is no where else to go!

But I guess if that's where most lose the weight then it makes sense to work up to that

Yeah same. Hopefully by that time that new tirzepetide Retratrutride will be available. I read it's a gear up from Mounjaro.

spottydogsarethebest · 06/06/2024 13:04

Hello all, just ordered for the first time hopefully my order should arrive on Saturday.

I'm terrified tbh.

Told husband about it and he's very disapproving (he's never been overweight, and has an off switch when he's full that I just dont have).

He's concerned about using medication in this way....but I need to lose 5 stone minimum, ideally 7 but that seems an impossible mountain to climb alone with the help of MJ or similar.

My BMI is 40, I'm 41 and I think if I don't do something drastic now then I'm heading for very serious health problems which would likely involve this kind of medication anyway?

ClonedSquare · 06/06/2024 13:06

Officially one month since I started Mounjaro and I'm down 16.5lbs. Amazed and so impressed. And really excited to still be feeling so positive about diet/weight loss as usually a month in I'd have almost nothing to show and have been miserable.

(Can't remember if I posted this on the old thread so posting here to placemark 🙂)

ObsidianTree · 06/06/2024 13:07

Good luck @spottydogsarethebest . You are the same age as me 😊 perfect time to start. Got to think about your health now etc.

It must be hard having a husband that doesn't get it. I guess just don't talk to him about it and get on with it. Fingers crossed you don't get any bad side effects and can keep going without his disapproving comments.

montysma1 · 06/06/2024 13:08

@R4ch402 Mainly because I am an absent minded idiot!

A friend who started at the same time as me is the only person who knows I am on MJ. So I told her what I had done so she could tell people in case I was found unconscious!

As it turns out I had not a single side effect and have had the most insanely suppressed week. I wish the rest of my life could be like this!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 06/06/2024 13:11

@spottydogsarethebest

I think you need a frank conversation with your DH. He needs to step up and support you even if he doesn’t approve of your choice. You are the one at risk of complications from obesity and you have taken a risk based approach that the benefits of weight loss outweigh the risks of the medication. You are an adult and it is your choice to make.

Has he never considered that if such a large % of the population is overweight or obese there is something going on that a bit more that a collective lack of willpower.

DietStartsM0NDAY · 06/06/2024 13:13

Good afternoon! I was looking for some advice from current users. I am wanting to start MJ but wondered if we are ever able to order more than one pens at a time?
I will be in the uk for 8 weeks over the summer, but then live abroad where supplies are not guaranteed. Like with my HRT I bring a few months supply back out with me. I was hoping to be able to do this? Any one experienced this?
Thanks in advance!

pinktransit · 06/06/2024 13:19

Thanks for the new thread @ObsidianTree , good to see you back 😀
Was about to order my new pen, then realised I'm heading down to my parents for a week, and don't want to risk it not arriving in time. So will have to wait a week.
Still undecided as to whether to continue with Medexpress, or go off-piste with Zava for the discount code. Or possible both.... will decide over the next few days.

Utterly dreading the parental visit - my mum is an absolute cow about weight.
I'm thinking that I'll just wear a lot of baggy things and hope she won't notice.

The appetite suppression is going to be awesome though - I usually end up taking extra food with me when I stay as they eat at 8am, 12.35, and then sometime around 8.30 ish, by which time I could eat my own arm. They don't snack, all food is carefully accounted for to minimise waste (which is fine, and works for them), and is vegan which I'm not. So I end up secretly snacking, which is ridiculous at my age. The disapproving looks for taking another slice of bread have to be seen to be believed. You can see the thought bubble above her head saying "And that's why you're fat".

Actually, even when I have lost weight in the past she's been mean about it.

Me: Hey Mum, I've lost a stone!
Mum: Such a pity when it doesn't show, isn't it?

Me: Yay, hit my target weight!
Mum: Yes. But remember, a thin elephant isn't a gazelle...

Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant 😂

pinktransit · 06/06/2024 13:30

Re-reading that, I have made Mum sound awful, and she's not. Just around food and weight. Otherwise, she's great, and we get on well. I try to get back down south every month or so, and stay for a few days. It's just that I'm happy to have lost over a stone, and don't want her to piss on my parade so to speak.

I feel your pain. My mum, also Obese, used to blatantly sabotage my efforts to lose weight from childhood, I guess she was envious of my determination, which she lacked. She was never happier than we were both fat and tucking in. I miss her now but also glad to be out of that toxicity. Good luck!

There’s no better gift than the gift of good health. Use my code and you’ll get 15% off your first order at ZAVA: REFYE2WQ

Would really appreciate this being used as I haven't had a return code yet for my next order. Thanks!

Hey, here is a screenshot from simple online pharmacy. It doesn't say if they deliver all at once or if this is a subscription. I'm also not sure if anyone else has used them or how reliable they are. Maybe look for reviews online?

Continuing Mounjaro... Thread 12
MaliceInWanderland · 06/06/2024 14:23

I've been taking MJ for nearly 12 weeks now and haven't veered from 2.5mg

I've lost 2 stone 11 lbs and reduced my bmi from nearly 37 to 29.

I intend to do another 2 months on 2.5 and then stop altogether - that's the plan anyway!

I've never had what I would recognise as appetite suppression and I've never felt full. It has reduced the food noise though and I eat smaller portions. I am also pretty active in that I do one session of exercise a day - spin or swimming or weights

So to answer a previous poster - you don't 'have' to go up to 5mg and beyond if you don't feel the need to
