Continuing Mounjaro... Thread 12

ObsidianTree · 06/06/2024 10:17

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

How is it possible that I weigh 2 pounds more than last night? No food or drink during the night.

Dodgy scales? Different part of the floor?

NC543210 · 10/06/2024 10:23

Morning everyone

Love reading how everyone is doing just can't believe how fast these threads go. Haha.

I appear to be in a major stall. I've just had my 3rd 7.5 jab.
And from the 2nd 5mg jab I've basically bounced around the same 3lb.
I lose it. It comes back. Lose it. Back.
I feel smaller (never measured) but haven't dropped a dress size or anything yet. I've lost around 9kg in 12 weeks which is fabulous but its basically been that for the past 5 weeks now.
Appetite suppression varies for me. Some days interestingly towards the end of the week its strong.
Other days not so much.

I'm in a calorie deficit every day and if the jab has done anything for me it has made it easier to make better choices around food.
Has anyone else had a massive stall fairly early on in?

I've just injected the back of my arm hoping it makes a difference.

NC543210 · 10/06/2024 10:25

Also I've never had bad side effects and even if I have something not recommended greasy food/alcohol it doesn't make me feel like crap. So I'm starting to think is it even working.
I go on holiday in 10 weeks and at this rate I'll be the same weight 🤣🤣

No. Scales are fine, same spot.

Babeglas · 10/06/2024 09:55

@ObsidianTree how do you stock pile? Do you go to different suppliers? Thank you

Ps. Well done to everyone on their loses! I'm amazed x

Just by ordered every 2/3 weeks. They don't check how often you are ordering pens.

I started with Asda and moved to MedExpress so did go back and ordered a spare pen from Asda after moving to med express. I then moved to Zava due to pricing. I still have an account with med express, so could technically order another pen, but I won't as I am happy having a few spare pens for now! I'm still 3 stones until goal, so don't need to worry about building a bigger supply for a bit yet.

OP posts:
ObsidianTree · 10/06/2024 10:33

NLseneca · 10/06/2024 10:17

@ObsidianTree but how do you order more of other doses other than 2.5 from a different provider? Also presumably if you were ordering from a different site you'd have to also be 'less forthcoming' with the new site re your BMI right?

My BMI was still over 30 when I moved suppliers.

So technically only really possible to forward plan when you aren't yet at BMI 25

There are a few on here that are reaching BMI 25 and have ordered a few extra pens ready for when they get cut off. So they can titrate down at their own pace.

Just checking in may have to delay going up to 5mg as fiancée wants to go away for the weekend and I don’t want to risk bad sauce effects away from home.

I just managed to use code TOPCASHBACK for my first medexpress order.

Mine didn't pay out. If you didn't use a code and paid full price it would be in interesting to know if MedExpress do agree the cashback.

Me! I am in a big stall at the moment. I notice it happens every 3 weeks or so and nothing shifts for minimum 10 days. Most frustrating.

Everdecreasingcircumferences · 10/06/2024 11:43

@NC543210 @AgathaMystery I'm in a stall too. Up another 0.3kg yesterday have been bouncing around just above 89kg for what feels like forever. The 'f*ck it' feeling is strong, I am trying to have faith in the process and keep believing that there is more weightloss to come.
But it hard when I see others with lower starting weights celebrating losing 2 or more stones in less time than I've been on MJ - I know we shouldn't compare but it's so hard not to. Please don't think I don't want people to share their successes - they absolutely should, it's great to see and my envy doesn't lessen their achievements in any way - but I've promised myself I'm going to be completely honest and that includes parts of me that are less pretty, such as envy of others. I need to own and not eat my feelings if I'm going to figure out how to make this weightloss a success in the long term.

MarmiteChocolate · 10/06/2024 11:55

Hi ladies
Just checking in! I am on Day 4 today after taking my first dose on Thursday evening. It's a complete headfuck that after decades of being permanently starving and fantasising / obsessing about what I could eat next and when, I literally have zero desire to eat anything today. Mindbending! I had 200 calories of protein overnight oats for breakfast with big glass of water and its new nearly noon and I'm not even contemplating lunch. Whereas before, I would be starting on lunch at about 10.30 with a pre-lunch bag or two of crisps!
I have got any side effects other than peeing loads because I'm drinking water. Felt a bit dizzy on one occasion.
Feeling like there might be a bit of hope for me after 25 years of obesity! Starting weight was just over 20 stone and goal is 12 stone.
Sending love to everyone x

Sounds frustrating!

Some thoughts:
Are you having enough water and protein?
Are you exercising, especially weight-bearing/resistance?

I've been very lucky, will be 3 months this week and have lost 3 stones overall. Still another 3 to go! I do have weeks where I don't really move on the scales but can usually link that back to poor diet and not enough movement. I'm still in calorie deficit but think that the other bits of the puzzle - what, not just how much food, and exercise - make a difference for me.

lurkylurk · 10/06/2024 12:05

MJqueen · 09/06/2024 20:50

I've read that it's 30 days cumulative of being out of the fridge, and that they can stay in the fridge indefinitely until the use by date.

Please read the leaflet that came with your medicine. The 30 days cumulative was the advice for single use pens or vials, not the multi-use Kwikpens!

They can stay in the fridge until use by date but not if they have been opened! Then they are to be used within 30 days.

Patient usage leaflet (information on when pen must be discarded near the end of leaflet:
https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/usermanual.15486.pdf

lurkylurk · 10/06/2024 12:11

ObsidianTree · 09/06/2024 21:00

I read on Facebook from someone that works in pharmaceuticals that the 30 day date is probably what it was tested up but doesn't mean it won't last longer. So maybe they can't guarantee how effective the drug would be after 30 days because they haven't tested it after 30 days.

The guidelines for multi-dose vials (which is what a kwikpen is) are the same for any multi-dose medicine, not just Mounjaro and have been for many years and exist because sterility cannot be guaranteed beyond that point. There's an article here that explains it well:

https://menmd.com/multi-dose-vials-and-the-28-day-sterility-rule/

Multi-dose Vials and the 28-day Sterility Rule - menMD

Multi-dose Vials and the 28-day Sterility Rule: Sterility means lack of contamination from infectious agents including germs.

I had a lovely weekend away. I was on days 7-9 of my 7.5mg dose deliberately. I still had quite a lot of appetite suppression but did have a couple of puddings and a bit of wine. Mostly I ate fish, seafood and salad. I’ve come back 2lbs heavier which I hope will disappear by tomorrow (fingers crossed).

WannabeHealthier · 10/06/2024 12:17

Mencia · 10/06/2024 10:26

No. Scales are fine, same spot.

I had this, after a couple of weeks it was clear my digital Salter scales were broken. I’d only had them 9-10 weeks! Test it with someone else, that’s how I knew.

I purchased some Renpho scales and hoping they last longer!

WannabeHealthier · 10/06/2024 12:27

I have finished my first 7.5mg pen (bonus dose) and will be reordering another 7.5. It is working almost too well this week as I am not really hungry or wanting to eat- have to force myself to.

Hoping this settles down soon as I don’t think it’s sustainable to feel this way. I’m prioritising protein intake for now as well as water. I struggled to eat or drink very much at a wedding this past weekend, which should pay off on the scales but wasn’t particularly enjoyable as I felt like a stuffed sausage all day 🤣 I feel very bloated

DragonflyRuby · 10/06/2024 12:32

Checking in with 4th weigh in which was 2.5mg + bonus done and I’m another 2lb down.

SW - 14st7
W1 - 13st13 (-8)
W2 - 13st9 (-4)
W3 - 13st5 (-4)
W4 - 13st1 (-4) 2.5mg + bonus

So in a month I am 1lb away from losing 1st7lb which feels insane. I don’t feel like I’ve lost that much but the clothes that I’d been wedging myself into for ages are now pretty comfy. I wore a pair of jeans all day yesterday and could sit comfy in them even whilst eating and previously I had to lie down and put them on.

The suppression has been up and down but even when it’s been down I’ve been getting full very easily so have obviously reduced my calories a lot and the food noise reduction is life changing.

The only negative is the hideous constipation but I’ve got into a routine of high fibre foods, lots of water and magnesium/psyllium husk and that has started to have an effect!

I’m starting 5mg today so hoping for minimal side effects as I have a busy week.

@ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat did they say why?

I got rejected for mysimba a while ago and it was because it didn't agree with one of the medicines I was talking.
