Continuing Mounjaro... Thread 12

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

@Marigolds24 you're absolutely right.

I know I'm over simplifying this but people who have struggled with alcohol/drugs tend to avoid those substances for life after they get clean. The problem with food is that you still have to eat.

There's a huge amount to unpack to understand why overeating happens and how to deal with it, and it's going to be unique to each person. Plus hundreds of internal and external factors.

...and then you read the damn headlines about how weight loss drugs are 'cheating' or a 'quick fix'....and I want to scream as we're all battling with so much. Not least the weight loss itself. Nobody on these threads is taking this lightly or sees it as a quick fix, we're all grappling with so much.

There needs to be a support system in place for the maintenance phase that's for sure. Both drug focussed and psychologically speaking.

I'm hoping that I can use the headspace MJ is giving me to take a step back and try and understand myself better.

I've been reading everything I can on emotional eating, trauma, etc etc and the role that plays in obesity or negative relationships with food. It's really helping me realise some things, and mounjaro aside, I don't need to self soothe with food anymore.
I really recommend the mind monster solution (book) and intuitive eating. Burnout is good too. Sorry I forget who the authors are, but a quick Google will help you find them!

Morning everyone I’m due a MedExpress order I’ve just seen that the codes aren’t working anymore.
Just a last minute check before I order, does anyone have any codes?

ClonedSquare · 10/06/2024 08:07

Did my second 5mg injection last night despite feeling a bit ill. Hasn't made me feel any worse, luckily!

Down 5.5lbs this week, making a total of 18lbs in 5 weeks! I can't even believe this, it feels so surreal.

Need to lose 1lb more to hit my first mini goal, so hoping to manage that this week. And then I'm 21lbs away from my first major goal, which I've set a deadline of September for but hopefully will reach sooner!

Rulay · 10/06/2024 08:16

Morning everyone. I've had a very busy weekend with birthdays and different things and made some unwise food choices - basically we ate out all weekend! And paid for it with the resulting nausea Envy luckily I've managed not to put any weight on so I seem to have got away with it.

I have a wedding on Saturday and I really wanted to be under 18 stone for it - I'm 18 stone 2 this morning so I'm not sure if this is doable but I'm trying to refocus myself now. Might go for a swim later.

I don't think so. I tried one which would give £5 off but it was for new customers only.

It pained me to pay £214 for a 12.5mg pen this weekend but it's going to be my last MedExpress order as have moved to ZAVA and will help the stockpile so I will be grateful when it's time to use it.

ThirdStorm · 10/06/2024 08:41

Day 2 of being on holiday and I think I’m making good choices. I’ve just watched my family tuck into a full English but I’m not hungry so I’m sipping water feeling perfectly happy. I’ve never been a breakfast person and I don’t feel pressured to start.

Namechangepleas · 10/06/2024 08:53

If 2.5mg is working for you and you're loosing each week and feel good on it are you allowed to just stay on that dose or do you have to move up?

Youdontevengohere · 10/06/2024 09:00

I’ve completely stalled on week 3 of 2.5mg, which I guess is to be expected, especially as I lost 9lb in the first 2 weeks. Trying to make sure I maintain now ahead of being able to move up to 5mg. I definitely need to up my water intake, I have 3 kids, one of whom is disabled plus working so I’m on the go all the time and I genuinely just forget to drink, then realise at about 5pm that I’ve got a beast of a headache and all I’ve had to drink all day is my morning black coffee.

ClonedSquare · 10/06/2024 09:10

Namechangepleas · 10/06/2024 08:53

If 2.5mg is working for you and you're loosing each week and feel good on it are you allowed to just stay on that dose or do you have to move up?

You're allowed to stay on it, but I've read a lot of posts from people on week 6 who stayed on 2.5mg and it started being less effective around then. I think 5, 10 and 15 are considered the recommended maintenance doses.

I went up to 5mg after my initial four weeks and haven't noticed any increase in side effects. I'm tempted to stay on it next month, but will see how I feel nearer the time.

DesparatePragmatist · 10/06/2024 09:14

@Youdontevengohere I find with water that I'm best if I take a fairly rigid approach - the just having a drink regularly approach means I do what you do and realise I haven't drunk for hours. So I have a pint glass (or a water bottle when I've gone to the office or out for the day) which I drink and refill 4x; once first thing, once before lunch, once early afternoon and once before supper. Sometimes it's a case of standing at the sink chugging it down on schedule. That banks 4 pints/2 litres and anything else is a bonus.

DesparatePragmatist · 10/06/2024 09:21

Weigh day for me and another 1.5 kg off. Not a super-fast loser compared to many on here, but at 5 weeks I've lost 6.1kg, and am within sight of the first stone lost which is looming in my head as a huge milestone - I've never been able to lose that much, ever, in 30+ years of dieting.

Took my first 5mg last night and did feel quite nauseous and unable to sleep overnight, but fine this morning apart from the usual dry mouth. If I get away with that as the side effects I'll be grateful!

BellaCriesAndThatsAlright · 10/06/2024 09:23

I'm such an idiot. I accidentally underdosed yesterday. I only did 40 clicks of my 2.5 pen. Just injected the remaining 20 clicks this morning, one day later. Do you think this will be ok or have I ruined my chances this week? In my defense I got back very late from a gig on Saturday and was half asleep!

I know it does seem so unfair. Allowing us to taste what feeling normal is like and then taking it away!

I read a post somewhere yesterday, someone said that there would be an announcement about Mounjaro in the coming days.

Just did a quick search and maybe it's something to do with this.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-04/britain-poised-to-offer-eli-lilly-s-weight-loss-drug-to-patients?embedded-checkout=true

Basically saying that the UK may favour MJ over Wegovy for weight loss and it does say :

"Unlike the blockbuster Wegovy, patients on Mounjaro won’t need to be part of a specialist weight-management service to receive the drug, the regulator said. There is also unlikely to be a cap on how long a patient can take Mounjaro whereas Wegovy use on the NHS is capped at two years, it added."

This would be amazing news! So hopefully it means we can take it as long as we want!

Also if it is going to be more easily available on the NHS, it's a bit of a shame as most of us will miss out. My BMI starting was about 37 and is under 30 now so I would no longer qualify.

Yeah think this is a reference to the draft Nice guidance on Mounjaro that came out last week. Was briefly discussed before, but it looks will be available via GPs and without a 2 year limit (they seem to suggest the 2 year limit was linked to access to specialist clinics only lasting that long.) Only skimmed it but it’s been written up in some doctors journals and think that’s the gist. But as you say criteria is BMI of 35 + other conditions. And I suspect even then people will have to push hard to get it. And only draft guidance so won’t come in for at least a few more months. But the arguments defo seem to be going the right way, the evidence on longer term use or at least slow tapering off is pretty persuasive:

Unfortunately no more med express codes. They won't give them anymore.

A lot of us have switched to Zava that offers 15% off with a referral code. Prices for Zava are good.

If you want to switch, ask for a code on here 😊

No problem at all. Quite a few people deliberately split the dose.

That must be a shock. I hope you’re OK.

I think you should talk to your GP. MJ is still so new that I imagine there will be very few experiences of accidental pregnancy (although you are the second person on these threads so the US sites may have some stories). But you need a proper medical opinion I think.

NightSweatsNinja · 10/06/2024 10:15

I have a code for AsdaOnline for 10% off for new starters, in case anyone needs one:

NLseneca · 10/06/2024 10:17

@ObsidianTree but how do you order more of other doses other than 2.5 from a different provider? Also presumably if you were ordering from a different site you'd have to also be 'less forthcoming' with the new site re your BMI right?

Mencia · 10/06/2024 10:19

How is it possible that I weigh 2 pounds more than last night? No food or drink during the night.

dcbgr · 10/06/2024 10:19

collagen isn't a complete protein. It is missing tryptophan. You can buy tryptophan capsules which will make collagen complete.
