Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Yes, I've lost 11lbs in the 4 weeks but it is literally because I have zero appetite at all. I'm taking my protein supplements and have a protein shake in the morning but I almost can't stomach food anymore!

I'd definitely stay on 2.5 then, I'm sorry it's been like this for you

Wonkypictureframe · 24/04/2024 16:54

Definitely stay there as you’re right that losing weight through not eating is not the right thing.

I’ve managed breakfast and lunch today (fruit and soup) and feel much better for it. Also DD made bread at school today and so I had to eat a lovely warm bread roll. It was delicious and I ate it happily and didn’t feel guilty.

Are you taking anything for constipation? Is there any fiber in your diet? How much water do you drink a day?

Sorry for all the questions, maybe we can try and help?

MounjaroNewbie · 24/04/2024 17:15

Taken my 3rd dose today. No weight loss at this point 😑

MountKilimounjaro · 24/04/2024 17:22

Has anyone gone from a 4mm needle to a 5mm needle? Did you feel the difference?

Pharmacy2U sent me loads of 4mm needles that I've now run out of and I have to use the 5mm that MedEx sent. Am I being a total wimp???

I've only had the 5mm because I've always been with Med Express, never felt a thing.

MedExpress order update (am switching to them)

Got an email acknowledging they have added the info I provided to my order. It's now with the prescriber to review and decide. I am feeling hopeful:

Thank you for confirming the requested information.

We have successfully updated your account details and your consultation will be reviewed soon by the prescriber. Once that is complete, you will receive an update via email.

Choux · 24/04/2024 17:32

I submitted the info yesterday at 2pm and got that email today at 5pm.

I think this is okay - for most people, this is not a therapeutic dose.

I had arthritis that shredded both my jaw joints, and needed a bilateral TMJ replacement. Due to the implants, I now have masseter botox several times yearly to preserve them. Be prepared, it's a large muscle and you have to fully clench whilst they inject, so they can find the muscle belly.

I've got a high pain threshold, but there were actual tears. 😳

I've got a wonky jaw, it opens slightly unevenly (the dentist always looks at my bite and goes "hmmmm") and the right side "clunks" a lot and seems to be getting worse and I do worry how it will be in another ten years, I didn't realise they did TMJ replacements, how was it once it was done?

HanSB · 24/04/2024 17:51

Stickthatupyourdojo · 24/04/2024 16:41

Does anyone know how long your account is "locked" before you can reorder from med express? I've taken my 3rd 5mg dose (so I have 1 left, plus the Brucey bonus 5th dose) and am about to order my 3rd pen but I would quite like to stay on 5mg for now but have a 7.5 available a couple of weeks in, just in case 5mg starts failing on me and I still have 3 or so weeks to go on the 5.

It's 2 weeks from the last date you ordered

That must be really frustrating, but don't lose hope. In the trials no one started losing until they were on higher doses. 2.5 is meant to get your body used to the drug.

MountKilimounjaro · 24/04/2024 18:03

Thanks for the reassurance @KeepingUndercover I think I'm just being a wimp!

Stickthatupyourdojo · 24/04/2024 18:24

Week 8 day 5, 5mg.

Appetite has returned a bit today after being rather absent yesterday. Nothing crazy, but I definitely feel the need to eat. No real food noise, apart from when a colleague had some sweets out -must admit I found myself scoffing them then realised what I was doing and stopped. Still a bit tempted, but comfortably manageable.
I anticipate being pretty hungry tomorrow, and then jab on Friday.

Are you tracking calories? Exercising? If you're not getting strong side effects then it can be easy to still eat enough/too much to not lose. If exercising as well, you could be gaining muscle.

I only started on Monday but cannot stomach eating anything either, feels like I’m particularly sensitive to it.

Have you felt the same all the way through or does it get worse with each injection?

MelissaLouRocks · 24/04/2024 19:24

lurkylurk · 24/04/2024 17:49

It took a long time to get there, I'd had several "flushing outs" of the joints, and arthroscopies to try to repair the cartilage, but bone was so rough it shredded them. They believe it was due to inflammation caused by me having pelvic mesh in 2003, as I've developed multiple autoimmune issues. Apparently there's only a couple of dozen replacements done a year, each joint is built to order in America after a specialist scan and costs approx. £15-20k. 😳

Pain is much better these days, but I've had some scarring in the joints whilst healing which has limited my mouth opening, although I can actually chew again now! The only real pain is when I need a GA (which happens more than I'd like), they have to do an awake fibre optic rather than a tube straight down my throat, which means a lovely thick tube shoved up my nose into my windpipe before I'm knocked out! And my jaw aches a lot when cleaning my teeth, and if I need dental treatment I need sedation as limited in how long I can hold my mouth open for.

I won't horrify you with the post op pics, I looked like I'd been in a major accident! But now you can only see a very slight scar on my neck either side. They cut from your temple, around the ear behind the tragus, and basically fold back the side of your face.

It took me quite a while to convince myself it was worth it, but I'd do it again. Sorry, turned into a bit of an essay! 😂
