Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

I'm so pleased at the general good sense, support and health focus that there is on this thread. Everyone is so knowledgeable and supportive. I don't even know if I'd have taken any if it wasn't for you lot!

This is exactly my experience, including the chase email today!

I think it's approved now, but I rang them as well as I wanted to know what was going on this weekend. I think if I hadn't my email withnthe additional stuff would have sat in the inbox until next week. I'm relieved as I didn't want the hassle of getting money back.

Whoop. Managed to get it sent to the post office down the road.
Ill collect Monday 😄

Not sure if the cold packs will last that long but if you’re using it straight away that won’t matter.

I’ve really enjoyed being on here and the focus on health. Lots of people clearly very clued up and educated.

I've enjoyed these threads. I sometimes go on the SEN boards as I have a disabled son, and sometimes telly threads, but this thread is poles apart from the aibu thread. Everyone is chilled and offer good advice - a far cry from aibu!

WannabeHealthier · 26/04/2024 20:45

Yes I echo the thanks for this thread (especially @ObsidianTree ) and I’m so pleased that everyone is doing this responsibly by eating enough food and prioritising protein- it’s heartening to read. I’m absolutely chuffed to read about all your successes- especially the non weight health benefits- it’s brilliant!

I too find the FB forum scary….some of the posters are on the highway to developing an eating disorder. What is the point in losing weight at an unhealthy and unsustainable weight when you’re going to look and feel like shit?

Also there is a lot of chatter in the US about compounding … it’s all very breaking bad and totally unsafe. If that happens here, I hope we’d all call it out.

I also worry these unsafe users will ruin it for the rest of us. If the NHS is dealing with the fallout from drug abuse (because that’s what it is) then they could raise the alarm and encourage the regulator to put further safeguards in place. At the end of the day, I would support whatever is needed to keep people safe (from their own stupidity!) but hopefully it won’t come to that.

WannabeHealthier · 26/04/2024 20:49

And yes I can’t believe we’re already on thread 7 given that the launch was only late February! We’re a chatty bunch 😂

But it really is a help to so many of us who have decided to keep this quiet - it’s great to be able to share and get peer support (which studies have shown is a big factor in sustainable weight loss).

@lurkylurk I'd be quite happy with taking a maintenance dose for life (say every two weeks) if it offsets the risk factors that accompany being obese. It's just that the NICE guidelines haven't caught up with the fact yet that these drugs aren't a cure and they are still advising a two year limit, which is madness and goes against what the manufacturers themselves are saying about it being a life long drug.

The lack of advice around this worries me. Being menopausal, I know my weight gain is due to a hormonal imbalance that will never be fixed with CICO and willpower. The same for a lot of people with obesity.

A friend in the USA was given metformin for maintenance she was on ozempic then miunjaro for over 2 years . I wonder if this is a viable option

Anonymous2025 · 26/04/2024 20:59

I'm going on holiday and want to take my mj with me, has anyone done this?

I have a checked bag and wondering about packing it in a cool bag in there? Can put it in a fridge when I get there but thinking about it going through security and staying cool. Any advice please.

I took mine with me to France - I only had one dose, so just packed it in my carry on. No questions, no concerns.

If you know you are going to be using it within three weeks, you do not need to cool it, of course. But packing it in your checked luggage will also work.

Purpledefector · 26/04/2024 22:56

Week 5, loving this magic stuff! I've noticed black circles under my eyes - I mean I had them before but properly mildly- now they are obvious.
What's going on? I'm sleeping well, eating healthy stuff and drinking lots of
Water....

spamm · 26/04/2024 23:22

@livingwithpmdd - I saw other comments re: possibly freezing in luggage area. Good point to remember.

livingwithpmdd · 26/04/2024 23:35

Thank you @spamm I think I'll take in my carry on then. I have 3 doses including the bonus one so will pop it in a mini cool bag and put it in the fridge when we get there.

I've heard of that being done in the US, Metformin works in a different way to Mounjaro and other GLP-1 medicines, it stimulates production of a compound that is also produced by the body after vigorous exercise and has a supressing effect on hunger, and also lowers blood sugar (hence it's use in the treatment of diabetes).

Metformin usually causes a very modest amount of weight loss, 2-3% over the course of a year but it could be useful in moderating hunger after coming off Mounjaro and it's a lot cheaper! It's about £20 for a months supply here in the UK. It has similar side effects to Mounjaro though.

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 27/04/2024 00:39

Woah I have had 1257 calories and don’t even feel hungry! Wizardry

MendaciousMabel · 27/04/2024 04:17

I went out for dinner tonight and had a really light dinner but a few drinks and wow. MJ and booze definitely do not mix! Woke up an hour ago with horrendous stomach pain, threw up and then the pain seemed to move to my back which was odd. Sat outside the bathroom door now and I think it has all eased off but I never want to experience that ever again.

MountKilimounjaro · 27/04/2024 04:44

Hope you start to feel better soon @MendaciousMabel
