winds of 80mph are predicted to hit parts of Ireland and the UK over Friday and Saturday. I’m north wales and we’re looking at winds of around 72mph on Saturday according to the met office. Lots of local events have been cancelled. Anyone else potentially affected by the storm?

I have never driven in 70mph winds but I’m guessing it’s very much not advisable?

I'm staying on the north coast of Cornwall this weekend, right on the sea (visiting family, we live on the Isle of Man!) and it's currently not as bad wind wise as it was on Thursday afternoon/evening when we drove down. Maybe I'm just used to the weather back home, and I'm fully aware that the worst is yet to come overnight. Hoping to get some sleep tonight anyway.
Lovely to see @OhYouBadBadKitten back here, I hope you are OK. I trust your weather forecasts and recommendations!

What's the diff between storm and hurricane as the wind speed would fit at lease a cat1 hurricane

Sustained wind speeds rather than gusts I think. The speeds being talked about here are mostly speeds of gusts. A hurricane would have those sorts of speeds as sustained wind speeds.

Wind has really picked up here in last hour.

StrongFemaleCharacter · 07/12/2024 01:29

I'm in an amber zone and it's sounding rough out there so can't imagine how it must be in a red zone. Wishing you all the best over night.

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 07/12/2024 01:48

South west wales. Close to Pembrey Sands so used to it being windy round here. But I am lying here really anxious about the way it sounds out there and the noises my roof is making. And we're not in the worst of it yet. Anyone else awake?

Dromaeosauridae · 07/12/2024 02:55

Yep, I’m on the Preselis. It sounds awful out there. Feeling really anxious.

Seaitoverthere · 07/12/2024 02:56

Wind has woken me up I think . @poppym12 I think I am fairly near you. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to go into Bristol tomorrow personally if it is still amber . The routes in and out of Bristol get horrendous after accidents which are very frequent at the best of times.

MantisAndCrumpet · 07/12/2024 03:01

I’m currently in a mere yellow warning area and the wind has woken me up!

Don't suppose you happen to know of any decent fence repair/replacement companies in B? 😅

I’m sorry, I don’t at the moment. I have a mate just outside Bristol who I would have recommended usually but he is working full time doing other things at the moment and hasn’t got any spare time. Have a look at your local FB group and see who people have recommended in the past.

BeastAngelMadwoman · 07/12/2024 03:34

Wind is sooo loud

BoudiccasBangles · 07/12/2024 03:35

Listening to the wind howling. It’s very gusty. Can hear it as it comes up the valley.

GrBH · 07/12/2024 03:50

I’m in Avonmouth staying ina hotel on the 4th floor. The building is literally swaying. It’s like a wall of wind. Pretty scary.

NotProper · 07/12/2024 04:05

It’s woken me up. This is very scary. It’s so loud and I can feel the house vibrating. I’ve never seen wind like this in 50 years. Climate change is already here and it’s petrifying that this is just the start. I’m so scared that DC are going to face this and much worse.

Its coming up bristol channel and wind map shows the worse is still to come.I am at a stone's throw from you, just got up to look outside and realized my shed door is wide open and swinging wildly. It takes quite a load of effort to open it normally! Went to wake up my partner but he is blissfully sleeping so had to secure it myself.house is making random noises dont think can sleep tonight

JoshLymanSwagger · 07/12/2024 04:34

Well, the wind has woken DH up which in turn means the wind has woken me up 🤦🏻‍♀️ (stealthy he isn't - the great clattering buttock).
One of our cats is spooked. He wouldn't go into the kitchen for his breakfast, and keeps looking around as if he's being followed 😿
Not that windy here, but we're just out of the amber in Cheshire.

Newdoggo · 07/12/2024 04:42

I'm in an amber zone west Lancs - no wind at all, so strange!

garlictwist · 07/12/2024 04:43

I'm in West Yorkshire and it's meant to be an amber warning but there's not a breath of wind or drop of rain.

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 07/12/2024 04:53

Morning all. Just been woken up by a massive gust and accompanying huge crash from the garden. I've peeped out and it's nothing that needs immediate attention thankfully.

It appears DH has decamped downstairs to where it's quieter.

I think according to the forecast we should.be in the peak of it now. I hope so because I wouldn't like to see it much worse.

Power still on though.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 07/12/2024 05:01

Yellow area here but I've been woken by the noise. Ours is meant to peak tomorrow daytime and DH has mentioned cycling to work! He's only doing overtime so I hope it's called off tbh. We're on the east coast.

Colourblinds · 07/12/2024 05:09

I still remember that 80s storm from when I was a dc, it knocked over so many trees.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 07/12/2024 05:17

Not a wink of sleep tonight, I guess.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 07/12/2024 05:18

The wind really picked up at 3 here, and had woken me again now.
Bath.
Prediction is for 2 more hours getting stronger.

NoWordForFluffy · 07/12/2024 05:23

It sounds dead quiet here now. Not sure where it's gone!
