Storm Darragh

winds of 80mph are predicted to hit parts of Ireland and the UK over Friday and Saturday. I’m north wales and we’re looking at winds of around 72mph on Saturday according to the met office. Lots of local events have been cancelled. Anyone else potentially affected by the storm?

I have never driven in 70mph winds but I’m guessing it’s very much not advisable?

Do go and treat yourself lost, I felt so much better after a long bath having not had one for 48+ hours.

I'm putting together a 'survival' tin now for next time as there are definitely things that would have made it easier.

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 08/12/2024 21:51

Power does seem really patchy. Borth has power down in the village but not on the hill. Upper Borth dwellers are getting a bit fed up of looking down and seeing the Christmas lights twinkling.

We've had power pretty consistently since yesterday lunchtime but Aberystwyth has been going on and off in patches through the day.

And I'm still getting texts from Scottish and Southern or whatever they're called saying they expect to get my supply back on tomorrow night.

I've just got home from a (delayed from yesterday) candle lit 50th birthday party. No power but there were enough people that the house was very cosy - maybe you just need to invite 40 people round for tea @lostinwales

We've been lucky in that we've had both power and water throughout. My dad's got almost no water pressure but at least can fill a kettle, the houses further up the hill have no water at all

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2024 22:05

Depending on which Storm category Darragh is classified as, householders will be able to get compensation for either more than 24 or more than 48 hours without power. You should be written to, but keep an eye on things.

Brynberian has just been told 6pm tomorrow as well, sounds like that's their default 'not yet' response right now :(

Might be sooner, i'm around the corner and reconnected a couple of hours ago.
(Still no mobile signal tho)

lostinwales · 08/12/2024 22:37

It's quite a treat seeing so many home place names on one thread! We have had the default 6pm twice now. Some people across the river seem to have been told 10pm instead but still tomorrow though. @Jellykat did they say tomorrow to you too though and you've got power now or did I misread that?

@JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby I totally get the Borth angst, I can see Cardigan merrily twinkling at me from across the river, at least if their lights went off I wouldn't have my night sky marred by the water treatment plant floodlights Grin

Jellykat · 08/12/2024 22:55

@lostinwales i had a national grid text saying 6pm tonight, but DS2 checked on his phone while he was in Cardi and it said Tuesday..
Fingers crossed you wake up to some warmth and working lightbulbs!

Jellykat · 08/12/2024 23:14

@lostinwales you can claim compensation from national grid for perished fridge and freezer contents btw..(which ive just done, as my fortnightly tescos delivery from Friday is pretty much buggered)

Tontu1 · 09/12/2024 08:05

10.30pm tomorrow estimated time for power back on here. I have a reptile so he’s my main concern! Managed to get a car battery type thing to plug his heat mat in to.

My parents in Cardigan have power so we’ve been staying with them. Hoping the power is back before tomorrow night though!

lostinwales · 09/12/2024 08:08

Ours is back! Hallleluia. I was NOT suited to live back in the 19th Century! Woke up at 6am to my bathroom light filling my bedroom with a lovely led glow Smile. Thank you VERY much men and women of the power companies for working through the night to get us back. How is everyone else doing?

@exLtEveDallas How are you doing as our current sole English person in the dark?

AlteredStater · 09/12/2024 08:32

We lost water supply for around 8 hrs yesterday, apparently due to knock-on effects of the storm on the electricity supply! Fortunately I keep some bottled water handy. Water's back on this morning.

So pleased for you lost, enjoy the power!

Sadik · 09/12/2024 08:58

That's great news @lostinwales

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 09/12/2024 09:12

Brilliant @lostinwales , I hope you've had a wonderful long hot shower.

Just don't do what DH did - he was so pleased when the power went back on at first that he hurled himself into the shower only for it to go off again as soon as he was all soapy. 😆

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/12/2024 09:14

@lostinwales phew! what a lovely start to the day.

exLtEveDallas · 09/12/2024 12:34

@lostinwales
Still in the dark sadly. I'm lucky in that I could escape to work this morning leaving DH at home, but I was in here for 7am because there was no point in me sitting cold and dark at home when I knew school would be open for the cleaners!

I'm not very hopeful for it coming back on tonight. DH says there is still no sign of anyone working in the village (a cable exploded on Sat).

I don't think I can cope with another day without a hair wash, so will have to brave it tonight I think 🥶

JenniferBooth · 09/12/2024 14:14

Totally unacceptable in this day and age that you are going without power for this long

midgetastic · 09/12/2024 15:09

@exLtEveDallas how far to your nearest swimming pool ?

exLtEveDallas · 09/12/2024 15:23

@midgetastic ahh not that far at all. You know I hadn't thought of that! I was annoyed with myself because I didn't renew my gym membership this summer and of course I could have showered there, but I think I'll use the leisure centre. Thanks for the idea!

Jellykat · 09/12/2024 19:26

Hooray! @lostinwales just popped in to see how you were doing.. glad to hear you're sparkly clean and warm again Grin

Jellykat · 13/12/2024 21:18

Currently enduring another power cut in my area!! National Power say there's a fault supplying 230 homes.. @lostinwales hope you're not one of them.
The poor buggers in Moylgrove have only just been reconnected, hope it doesn't include them either.

tribpot · 14/12/2024 12:18

Oh no @Jellykat I was talking to a colleague in south Wales yesterday who'd been without power from 7am Saturday to 7pm Monday and all she wanted this weekend was a quiet one with the power on. I'm sure you feel the same! Really keeping fingers crossed it's only off for a short time.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/12/2024 13:00

I'm sorry to hear the power outages are ongoing. It's the same for some people over here. We had a convoy of electricians from France come over to help us out. We also have postal delays at the moment due to the closure of Holyhead. I hope power will be restored for affected people soon. It must be very miserable.

justasking111 · 14/12/2024 13:49

Holyhead is a concern but hopefully open again on Thursday
