Some potentially rather nasty storms continue to be a risk today.

Overnight extremely heavy rainfall hit parts of the SW. This will continue to be a theme here through the day. The area affected by heavy rainfall will expand across the south coast. Later on mid afternoon into the evening, areas around Kent and perhaps Sussex could see some severe thunderstorms.

Along with torrential rainfall, other risks included large hail, frequent lightning and damaging winds.

The Met Office have a warning out for the SW and Wales.

East Anglia, Cambs/Suffolk border checking in!

Got woken up about 15 mins ago by torrential rain and full-on crash-bang-flash show! Easing off now, naturally I’m the only one awake - even the cat hasn’t batted an eyelid!

Silkiebunny · 18/09/2023 02:25

Thunder and lightening here and several 1 minute power cuts. Cat is trilling but clingy. Rabbit been given extra food. Poor silkies. Seems to be calming.

RoyKentFanclub · 18/09/2023 04:54

Thunder and lightening here in East Mids for the past hour. I’m not going out in it but can see that DS helpfully left the summerhouse door open..

Taylorscat · 18/09/2023 06:34

@OhYouBadBadKitten your prediction of some tired people for Monday was accurate ! It was over by 1 but I was asleep at 10 - for a very short time …! The dog was absolutely terrified , he’ll be out for the count most of today I reckon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/09/2023 07:35

Morning all. Grin That was quite the stormy night for the many who got caught! I've not seen any hail or damaging winds reported yet, but lots and lots of flash flooding, some quite severe and of course that lightning show.

So sleepy. Is it time for bed yet?

Completely passed me by here in Hastings on the East Sussex coast - rain but not even a rumble of thunder. Seems we are the only area that missed it!

Rockschooldropout · 18/09/2023 07:45

It went on here until at least two when I finally fell asleep .. both cats came and got on the bed which is unusual for them (usually it’s one or the other ) . Apparently something was struck in my nearest big town and four fire fire engines were out 😳

Big storm last night

So much rain and lightening

Pretty loud

GloriaSmud · 18/09/2023 07:48

Had heavy rain which started about 3.30am here (Leicester), which lasted 30-45 minutes. Had a few flashes of lightning, a rumble of thunder and that was it.

@LizzysDrippings I think that was the camera not being able to cope with the over-exposure/ brightness of the lightning. It looked like nature was putting on quite a show!

Somerset/Wiltshire area. Had some heavy rain this afternoon but no thunderstorms. Currently a little bit of light rain, can hear the occasional distant bang (not rumble - somewhere is getting a battering!) but no lightning yet although on Blitzortung it's mainly towards the south and east of here.

Nothing else here overnight other than some heavy rain. Seems the storms around here were very localised.

It’s just gone VERY dark here in West Suffolk and lightningmap shows there’s something coming our way!

As many people are still on this thread. I'll put these rain warnings in here. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings?WT.mc_id=Twitter_Weatherdesk_Enquiries#?date=2023-09-19&id=72349dbb-2b55-4216-90aa-1f5bb309f9e8&details Some places in the areas may see 150-200mm in total. That is a huge amount of rain and would cause sgnificant flooding. I expect when the areas are refined they will create smaller amber warnings.

Crossing the channel last night looked a bit ominous until we reached the coast and it was clear skies, Interestingly normally that flight is routed over Paris, but yesterday was routed over Brussels. Pretty bumpy for most of the flight but it was a clear evening coming into land in London. Oh and I slept through the storm last night, my daughter said the lightening was pretty impressive.
