Some potentially rather nasty storms continue to be a risk today.

Overnight extremely heavy rainfall hit parts of the SW. This will continue to be a theme here through the day. The area affected by heavy rainfall will expand across the south coast. Later on mid afternoon into the evening, areas around Kent and perhaps Sussex could see some severe thunderstorms.

Along with torrential rainfall, other risks included large hail, frequent lightning and damaging winds.

The Met Office have a warning out for the SW and Wales.

East Surrey here, just coming to end of 20 mins of very intense lightning and thunder. Had curtains open and some of the lightning was blinding. Can see on map there was a strike one road away from ours. Think there's more incoming at some point.

MehtotheChristmasrunup · 18/09/2023 00:27

East Hants. Passed over us a couple of hours ago. Amazing sounding thunder quite sizzley rather than loud claps? And soooo warm.

SquirmOfEels · 18/09/2023 00:28

Awake Londoner - the sky has been lighting up for a while, but must have been from a distance as only faintest of rumbles.

Just now getting close enough to look like flashes with proper thunder following. Rain just started.

(also watching on map to see how close it's showing the lightning, and it's really rather addictive, even though I should be asleep!)

I just had a look on flightradar, and there's a few aircraft having fun and games getting in to land at Gatwick. They are having to do a few circuits. Bit bumpy up there, I reckon. There's one flight that took off to go to Guernsey, and it's been all over the place and now returning back to Gatwick again, coming into land now.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/09/2023 00:42

I have never seen this much one-off sheet lightning. It's like someone flicking the lights on and off for half an hour, while thunder grumbles half heartedly.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/09/2023 00:43

On-off, not one-off.

Peepshowcreepshow · 18/09/2023 00:45

The lightning here in London is insane, my bedroom is lighting up every 30 seconds. Lots of rain, thunder sounds quite distant.

Peepshowcreepshow · 18/09/2023 00:49

Rain is now torrential, lightning still in full force. Glad I got the cats in!

Panjandrum123 · 18/09/2023 00:49

Just had one crack of thunder (mid Herts), hoping that’s it 🤞🏼⛈️

AIstolemylunch · 18/09/2023 00:51

North Surrey London borders here and that was insane! Never seen a sheet lightning storm like that in the UK, was like being in the Caribbean in a storm for a good half hour, constant thunder and lightning. Has passed now and just heavy rain. Whole house was purple!

Todayiscool · 18/09/2023 00:52

Norh Surrey, nothing for last 20 mins or so, it appears to have passed.

Luckingfovely · 18/09/2023 00:56

Home Counties here - the loudest thunder I think I've heard in the UK, for the last 45 mins. Seems to be calming now - sadly!

Kittensat36 · 18/09/2023 00:56

Absolutely thrashing it down in NE London. Lighting flashes, the works. One of my cats is sulking cos I have shut the window .

BeautBastard · 18/09/2023 00:57

East london has been pretty mad for about 20 minutes, lots of lightening now and torrential rain

HelloVeritas · 18/09/2023 01:02

South Gloucestershire here and it's kicking off. Had just dropped off too but dog now cowering under the duvet. So much for sleep!

I said this but said it was a like summer storm in the great lakes. Lots of electricity and not much else to start with

EmmaEmerald · 18/09/2023 01:10

Good 15 mins lightning in Essex - ooh, more as I type

sentimentally wondering what it's like in my previous place, lightning map shows it's not there yet.

YokoOnosBigHat · 18/09/2023 01:14

Lightening and a few rumbles of thunder as well as heavy rain in east London for about the last half an hour.

Rockschooldropout · 18/09/2023 01:17

Cotswolds and it’s been going on for about 45 minutes .. the sky is lighting up every few seconds

redshoes2017 · 18/09/2023 01:24

Amazing thunder and lightning here in wiltshire at the moment along with very heavy rainfall. Haven't heard thunder as loud as that since I was a kid. Nice to listen to but wouldn't want to be out in it. My dog is currently barking at the sheet lightning which is lighting the house up!

MysteryPlants · 18/09/2023 01:24

Oxfordshire. Read this thread just before bed, then massive rumbles woke me at 1am Blush Now here comes the torrential rain! Thanks OYBBK

Iknowitswrong15 · 18/09/2023 01:47

London here and just got the dogs and kids resettled 😂 everyone is going to be groggy on the school run

we had lighting from 10 pm but it kept disappearing and then thunder from 11-1 am and lightning from 12-1am
along side torrential rain

cantsleepwontcry · 18/09/2023 01:48

Cheltenham here , just started

Horriblewoman · 18/09/2023 01:50

I flew through it and landed at Gatwick. Would not like to repeat that experience.

slobro · 18/09/2023 02:07

Lots of rain but no lightning or thunder here in west Kent. Checked the lightning map to see if I'd somehow slept through it but not a sausage!
