Thunderstorms Sunday 17th September.

Some potentially rather nasty storms continue to be a risk today.

Overnight extremely heavy rainfall hit parts of the SW. This will continue to be a theme here through the day. The area affected by heavy rainfall will expand across the south coast. Later on mid afternoon into the evening, areas around Kent and perhaps Sussex could see some severe thunderstorms.

Along with torrential rainfall, other risks included large hail, frequent lightning and damaging winds.

We're near Gatwick. It rained on and off today (worst was at lunchtime) but no thunder or lightning. Now it's rolling away outside with the occasional flash, but it's very soft sounding.

Am in Tunbridge Wells and it’s a bit rumbly.

Distant flashes and rumbles in East Hampshire for the last couple of hours.

Have looked at lightning map ..a lot going on in East /West Sussex and moving towards Kent.

We have had some incredibly loud thunder in south Kent within the last half hour, a few flashes of lightning - but it’s only spitting with rain

north Hampshire. Rained a bit today, not too much. 23.38. The biggest boom of thunder, - sounded like a jumbo jet flying into my bedroom, gave me a real fright. A bit more on & off since then, no lightning & still not much rain.

Also near Chichester here, over 500 lightening strikes in the five mile radius of where I'm staying according to the lightening tracker app.

Very spectacular but has moved on now.

We have over a hour of lightning every 3-15 seconds here. Gloriously unuaul. Never seen anything like it in my life

Really loud thunderstorm going over us now (South coast in the area is Isle of Wight). Really heavy rain and the noise from the storm is so loud!

@GloriaSmud wow! Although why is it so light between flashes anyway? Is the area illuminated anyway?

@CafeCremeMerci north Hants too. Possibly same town (F?) Christ on a motorbike. Thought the world had ended / started. Won't be going back to sleep for some time!!!!

Rather eerie and calm here at the moment, no rain and no wind. I just went out to look for one of the cats who hasn't come in to bed yet, and there's a light show in the far distance away to the east, but I can't hear it.

Saw a couple of bats though.

Rumbles getting louder now in West Kent …doggy refusing to go outside!!

We've got bunches of thunder/lightening in Surrey - so it's not too far away.

London people - severe storm incoming.

Now raining and lightning everywhere in SW Kent !

Somerset/Wiltshire area. Had some heavy rain this afternoon but no thunderstorms. Currently a little bit of light rain, can hear the occasional distant bang (not rumble - somewhere is getting a battering!) but no lightning yet although on Blitzortung it's mainly towards the south and east of here.

Yep. North Surrey currently taking a battering.

Crazy lightning here in Surrey/ London borders and incredibly loud thunder too, heavy rain too of course. Not sure I can remember seeing lightning like this in the UK.

North Hampshire- Surrey border is getting hammered atm
