Some potentially rather nasty storms continue to be a risk today.

Overnight extremely heavy rainfall hit parts of the SW. This will continue to be a theme here through the day. The area affected by heavy rainfall will expand across the south coast. Later on mid afternoon into the evening, areas around Kent and perhaps Sussex could see some severe thunderstorms.

Along with torrential rainfall, other risks included large hail, frequent lightning and damaging winds.

The Met Office have a warning out for the SW and Wales.

Massive thunderstorm and pouring rain here on the South Coast near Portsmouth ⚡️⛈️

TheFutureIs · 17/09/2023 11:56

Very loud in Portsmouth! Due hail later on too

CurlsLDN · 17/09/2023 12:01

We were camping last night in Devon, awake from 1-4 with lightning and thunder every few seconds. It was unnerving but nothing we could do except hunker down. We watched the live lightning map and it was fascinating to see

WingBingo · 17/09/2023 12:17

Extremely heavily rain here in east Devon right now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/09/2023 13:04

As the weather swings north it is becoming less electrically active.

justasking111 · 17/09/2023 13:20

We're not forecast anything till 10 pm, then just rain

Very heavy rain all day in sw Devon - though after initial promising rumbles of thunder it's stopped. Even so a massive contrast in weather to a week ago.

Very disappointed that nothing like a thunderstorm here on the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire border. We’ve had some rain, nothing dramatic 🤷🏼‍♀️
I was hoping for the whole shebang!

Scampuss · 17/09/2023 16:51

Torrential rain and lots of local flooding here Somerset/Devon border. A lot is drains failing rather than rivers bursting.

Onthisproject · 17/09/2023 16:55

Nothing in Northamptonshire yet

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/09/2023 17:03

An updated amber warning for north Devon and Somerset, where rainfall total could reach 120mm today.

More flash flooding is very likely.

In the mean time we have storms approaching the Poole area. These look potentially very potent. Also some hints of storms developing over north France that could be a hint of developments later tonight.

Lots of interesting activity in the channel this evening. Anywhere along the coast from Hampshire (less likely) though to Kent could see some severe thunderstorms overnight. These may extend north into East Anglia by morning. In the mean time, Normandy, France saw a strong tornado this afternoon.

We've had heavy rain for the last few hours but as much as I like a good storm, we have Radio 2 in the Park in Leicester this weekend (I'm about 5 miles away and can hear some of it!) and a thunderstorm and park-full of people doesn't really bare thinking about.

Shock at the tornado in France.

justasking111 · 17/09/2023 21:13

Bad night for the south looking at the wind direction and amount of rain forecast. Having been in flood zones twice and seen the destruction I never want to see it again. Torrential rain still makes me twitch 30 years on.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/09/2023 22:01

It looks like a very lively night for many in areas I've already indicated. Lots of storms triggering in the channel now.

We’ve just had an amazing storm in SE Wales- heavy rain, hail, thunder and lightning the lot. Stood in the porch watching it.

SquirmOfEels · 17/09/2023 22:12

I've just been looking on

Real Time Lightning Map :: LightningMaps.org

and the storms in the Channel are moving quite quickly - seem to be heading up to between Portsmouth and Brighton.

Much livelier in France - looks really heavy there

LadyFlumpalot · 17/09/2023 22:22

Should probably go and make sure the windows are all shut upstairs... 🤣 looks like it's on the way imminently.

Pretty lively near Chichester on the South Coast now. Almost continuous lightning.

JenniferBooth · 17/09/2023 23:26
