Snow warning for east London and thereabouts

Weve been talking about this area of snow on the long running winter watch thread, but I want to push this one separately (in part because mn have changed their algorithms so that threads over 30 days old wont trend)

It looks like it could cause some chaos as it rotates a little anticlockwise. If you are in London this evening and need to get home tonight please check your transport operator for how they are running.

Following a few posts on Twitter, how absolutely petrifying for those stuck in unmoving traffic in these conditions. Petrol running out, can't risk keeping the car running for heat. I expect many will run out of phone battery. Awful. They must be so stressed. Especially with kids.

I’m in East London and it’s really thick now but it has stopped at the moment.
Yes we were warned of snow but not warned about possible closures of motorways, roads, schools and the Transport System .

I just assume all this when there's a snow forecast but I am probably a lot older than you. Growing up in an outer zone of London/Essex, I think we just assume nothing will work in snow.

Winterpetal · 12/12/2022 02:03

What’s the prediction for next Saturday,any ideas

avamiah · 12/12/2022 02:11

@EmmaAgain22 ,
I would assume this if I was living in the highlands in beautiful Scotland but I’m not.😳

BatshitCrazyWoman · 12/12/2022 05:17

We have about 3 inches.

I'm up for work but Southeastern trains are chaos. I don't think I'll be going anywhere!

We've ended up with 4 inches!

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 12/12/2022 05:55

Our roads were gritted but once the volume of snow overtook the volume of moving traffic it didn't help

mrshoho · 12/12/2022 06:37

Feel for those that were stuck overnight on the M25 and other places. Has been a wake up call for me as I was near there around 6pm collecting Son from work at Saracens and was just a few flakes then. I realised we would have been completely unprepared with no essentials. I should know better but didn't give it a thought when travelling what should be a 20 minute max journey.

Also how do people with electric cars stay warm sitting overnight?

ImOutOfTouch · 12/12/2022 07:25

It snowed heavily in the north west on Friday. We're alive.

Your point?
That people in the south are just making a big fuss?

GloriaSmud · 12/12/2022 07:35

trafficengland (although the map is taking aaaaages to load) has information on road travel. If you go on 'map layers' and tick 'cameras,' might be able to see snow amounts/ whether traffic is moving.

National rail for travel disruption.

Roundandnour · 12/12/2022 07:39

Wish I had seen this last night. Started snowing around 7pm thick and settled in the City of London.

As others have mentioned it wasn’t mentioned on a lot of sites. Didn’t hear the gritters either over night and usually on the ball with it.

Roundandnour · 12/12/2022 07:44

Transport wise according to city mapper severe delays, parts of Northern line closed, overground to Finsbury Park some trains cancelled, buses severe delays

Drcoxisafox · 12/12/2022 07:47

@OhYouBadBadKitten is it likely we might get any more snow in Essex . I’m in Chelmsford? Was predicted yesterday once the snow started but has faded off the forecast… I don’t entirely trust it though!

I'm Chelmsford too , I had dd on the phone (also in Chelmsford) this morning in a panic as she has to drive to Brentwood and although the A12 looks not too bad , she couldn't get out of the side roads .

Perhaps the odd shower, especially a little later in the week, but nothing like last night is showing in this region.

Yes, and there was plenty of discussion about it on the other thread. This thread was a specific thread for this region because it was obvious that people in a major city would not have a clue what was about to happen.

Did lots of londoners come on to your discussion thread to say that the weather was different in london?

Back on topic, in North London, our secondary school is closed today but primary open so they are making their way by bus (normally a 30 min walk)

Pathetic.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 12/12/2022 09:28

Our snow fizzled out at around 9pm and although I was worried about driving this morning it soon became clear that only the area immediately around us had snow/ice still on the roads. Half a mile down the road towards the east and there was no sign of any snow. I love snow so feel a bit disappointed. We can see a across the water to Kent from where I live and it looks very white over that side.

Drcoxisafox · 12/12/2022 10:54

@OhYouBadBadKitten thank you!

@Newwardrobe hello fellow chelmsfordian!

For electric cars, the ‘engine’ and the heating aren’t linked in the same way. So you just turn the heating on even if your car is stationary/off. As long as you have sufficient charge of course. Ours has heated seats as well, which use less power than blowing the hot air so we’d probably use those.
