Snow warning for east London and thereabouts

Weve been talking about this area of snow on the long running winter watch thread, but I want to push this one separately (in part because mn have changed their algorithms so that threads over 30 days old wont trend)

It looks like it could cause some chaos as it rotates a little anticlockwise. If you are in London this evening and need to get home tonight please check your transport operator for how they are running.

I'm in Essex. We have nearly 4 inches (scientifically measured by poking a ruler into the snow through the catflap). Had to go out at 7.30 to pick my DD up a few miles away and it was treacherous. None of the roads, even A roads, had been gritted.

I was singing in a carol concert in Central London tonight. We finished with White Christmas, came out and it was snowing heavily! Very beautiful but the roads and pavements don't seem to be gritted in East London so tomorrow will be treacherous.

I don't know why highways have been caught out by this. Warnings were out well in advance. It wasn't a rain/snow marginal situation either.

Some North Londoners on Twitter saying Google and BBC weather had no snow predicted. I've seen it for days on Accu, and XC.

Tomorrows commute and school run could be very challenging!

South West London, snow.

I agree. We live near a moderately main local road which will likely either be gritted or enough night traffic to keep safe for driving.

But getting from here to that road hmmmmm.....

Not sure which walking paths to evil school would be gritted....

Whereabouts are you?
i'm on a high floor so can't gauge depth unless i go downstairs to the lobby..which I won't do in PJs, will find out tomorrow!

I’m in Chelmsford and it’s stopped now but we have two to three inches and apparently more overnight? Not sure how reliable that is. DH wants to go into the office in London tomorrow which I don’t think is wise as trains are so unreliable with any weather extreme! I’m hoping we get a bit more in the early hours

EmmaAgain22 · 12/12/2022 00:24

The temp in my flat has really plummeted in the last hour. It's normally balmy in here, surrounded by other flats too. Must be colder than they say. I've lived here ages, not seen the temp go this low.

AlwaysLatte · 12/12/2022 00:25

We're in the South East and have 4 inches of snow 😍

TheOrigRights · 12/12/2022 00:26

Lots here in Essex. I am meant to be accompanying my FIL (a care home resident) for a minor outpatients appt tomorrow. Hosp transport meant to collect him from the home, they call me and I leave my home and meet him at the hosp.
It's tricky at the best of times (communications, timings, delays) so I wonder what will happen. Maybe it'll all be off and I can go for a run in thx snow (always good for cleaning the trainers).
Ds2 hoping for a day off school!

EIfie · 12/12/2022 00:26

3 inches, sorry!

Drcoxisafox · 12/12/2022 00:29

@AlwaysLatte are you predicted more over night too?

avamiah · 12/12/2022 00:30

I’m near Mile End ( east London ) and it’s thick ( 3/ 4 inches)
I’m a bit worried about the underground ( central line ) as it might not be running and school might be shut .😬🫣

zen1 · 12/12/2022 00:31

We’re in SE London and there was a good three inches by 8pm. Teens were excited so we took them out nighttime sledging. They’re hoping for a day off school tomorrow, but it’s stopped now.

avamiah · 12/12/2022 00:31

Does anybody know what happens with the London Underground with a lot of snow as it’s been years since we have had it??
Thanks

It depends on how much of the line is not underground usually. Hard to say right now, but there have been occasions previously when only a few lives have remained open. That was really extreme slow, though.

Pretty bad. Most lines start above ground and the workers have to get to work. If you can avoid using it, then do. I'd guess Central Line won't beyond Stratford on that side, Piccadilly prob not Finsbury Park if that, Northern might get to Archway.

am no good with knowledge of south or west, sorry.

avamiah · 12/12/2022 00:51

@EmmaAgain22
Thanks .
I hate uncertainty but how often do we get snow .😶
Lets see what happens in the next 6 hours .

Horsemad · 12/12/2022 00:53

DS supposedly flying in to Stansted tomorrow then train to East Mids... 🙄

Forever42 · 12/12/2022 00:54

M25 and M11 in Essex are carnage. People stuck in their cars for hours going nowhere. Can't understand why they weren't gritted. Even if the snow has been more than forecast, the temperatures were forecast to be below freezing so they should have been gritted anyway.

Totally agree with you and it makes no sense.
Shocking

NE London/ Essex border. Roads are mayhem. Glad I made it home in one piece. Cars now on driveway and doubt will be able to move them in the morning in so school and nursery run highly unlikely.
