Temperatures of 42C, day after day would do that to anyone!

Lockheart · 07/07/2018 12:03

Is there any chance of slightly cooler weather soon? I don't want it to be cold, but a drop of 5 degrees or so would be fantastic. And we also badly need some prolonged heavy rain - my farming family are frantic with worry about this dry spell.

I live on the top floor of a house in London that gets direct sunshine all day (end of a terrace) - and even with all windows open and fans going it's still 29 degrees in this room as I type. It didn't drop below 28 in my bedroom last night. I should know, since I was awake all night because of the heat.

Just a drop of a few degrees would be perfect - it would still be lovely and warm, but not this exhausting and headache inducing :(

GloriaSmud · 07/07/2018 12:29

Lockheart ~ there should be a few days of slightly cooler weather midweek (more 22 and 23C) before it heats up again for next weekend.

Guardian report ~ we could see the hottest day of the year this weekend.

Metoffice Heat Health watch page ~ a Level 3 for some areas.

LighthouseSouth · 07/07/2018 12:38

hi Gloria

do you have any thoughts on the longer term outlook for London please? I'm worried we're stuck with this till October.

LapdanceShoeshine · 07/07/2018 12:51

@Lockheart

Sympathies on the S facing windows 😕

Have you also got some E & W facing ones? Our mid-terrace is E at the back & W at the front, with a couple of S facing windows on the rear extension.

We have all windows wide open at night, with fans going too; then in the morning we close the E & S ones until the sun has gone round, then open those - providing the outside air/breeze is cooler than inside - & close the W ones.

It’s not a perfect solution (external shutters or an awning would be great!) but it’s helpful

GloriaSmud · 07/07/2018 13:07

It's a bit early to say Lighthouse and I've just had a quick look at the weather websites and don't think any of them are doing autumn/winter forecasts yet. But this weather has to break sometime and hopefully before October (for the sake of water companies, farmers, people who hate the heat etc)

oldsilver · 07/07/2018 13:29

Lockheart we lived in a similar situation about 12 years ago with a 6 month old it is unbearable. We used to freeze litre bottles, 3/4 full of water and plonk them in front of fans.

Felt like it really made a difference just kept revolving them between the fans and the freezer when they thawed.

LighthouseSouth · 07/07/2018 14:19

thanks Gloria

sorry I was slightly exaggerating with October, but there's no sign of a real break so far I think? I know Tuesday is meant to be better but then I see a steady climb.

digerd · 08/07/2018 12:36

SE
TV said Monday and Tuesday will be cooler then temp rising again.
Just had a soup for lunch which has brought me out in a soaking hot forever flush. Used my Flea Spray instead of Magicool ,as heat has frazzled my brain.Took dog out at 6.30am last few days, then 5pm but yesterday dog and I couldn't manage it and we both were in bed - or on it-by 9pm as my ankles had swollen in the heat and we were both shattered.

we've had a lovely fresh northerly breeze until recently but now left us in the lurch.
We have no breeze , grass and many pot plants have already diedSad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2018 16:34

No real signs of a breakdown still, but at least there will be a few days of cooler :) I've been away for a week and it's quite shocking to see the parks turned to brown straw.

GloriaSmud · 08/07/2018 16:37

Aw digerd ~ swollen ankles are awful. I read last week that if you 'rock' on your feet e.g. go on tiptoes and then back on heels several times a day, it's supposed to help. I've been doing it and it does help but my ankles are still slightly swollen at the end of the day (my left one more than my right, which makes things look very lop-sided! Confused

The Guardian are reporting the heatwave is to last another week.

GloriaSmud · 08/07/2018 16:39

Nice to have you back, OYBBK.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2018 16:39

It's really hard to keep things adequately watered isn't it.

To top it all, one of my cats has gone missing :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2018 16:39

Thanks Gloria.

SimonBridges · 08/07/2018 16:41

Oh no kitten.
Has she made herself a nest in a nice cool spot I wonder?
My girl has been refusing to come in lately from her nice dark spot behind the shed in all the ivy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2018 16:42

We've looked everywhere. She's one for getting into people's cars and sheds, so I hope that hasn't happened. My friend who was looking after her saw her yesterday.

beenrumbled · 08/07/2018 16:45

Oh no hope your cat is home soon, what a horrible homecoming

perhapstomorrow · 08/07/2018 17:47

Oh no. I hope your cat turns up soon. Our cat has barely been visible for the last few days. Think she's finding hidden shady spots.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2018 22:25

no sign :(

codswallopandbalderdash · 08/07/2018 22:27

I have HAD ENOUGH of this weather. I want rain please

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2018 22:42

Apart from the chance of a thunderstorm there's no rain showing.

flopsyrabbit1 · 09/07/2018 00:18

princesstiasmum · 09/07/2018 09:04

The forecast here is for rain today, and all this week looks dismal too, North Yorkshire, but maybe because we are on the coast,
I want more sun,Grin but i am pleased for the aniomals, its been too hot for them, but not as hot here as in some places more south i think

ClosdesMouches · 09/07/2018 10:02

princesstiasmum, not just down south at all. Cross the Pennines to Lancashire, Cheshire, even Cumbria. It's been hot here for weeks with no rain. My ILs live just near Whitby and they can't believe the weather over here!
