A thread to discuss the good and bad reports in the media,TV etc.

Starting with a favourite that's often good for a laugh, the front page of the Daily Express this morning.

There was also this programme Britain's Killer Storms that was on Channel 4 on Sunday. Not sure what it's like but have recorded to watch later.

When did Brits start naming storms? "Storm Emily"? Confused

For some reason the Express seem to have latched onto the idea that weather is sexy. Vast depressions roaring towards us and so on.... I'm sure they MUST be aware that people generally click in their stories merely to ridicule them! That's the danger of internet news. They don't care at all that it's not accurate.

December is generally pretty stormy, then it usually quietens down after the New Year. But I'm Dreaming of a Muddy Christmas doesn't sound as nice.

Perihelion · 17/12/2013 17:57

Apparently the Free University of Berlin names low pressure systems affecting Europe.
However, Scots renamed Storm Frieldheim, Hurricane Bawbag in Dec 2011. Was the biggest laugh I've ever had reading social media, while hearing tiles crashing off my roof.
We've also had some belters of storms after Hogmanay and into Jan.

HesterShaw · 17/12/2013 18:04

Oh yes, the 1990 storm was January wasn't it? The one in which René the cafe owner took a billboard right in the head?

I just seem to have the impression, that it's often mild and windy up until Christmas, and then gets chillier (I guess more anticyclonic and therefore more settled) after the new year. Maybe it's just last winter clouding my memory....not as young as I was etc....

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 18/12/2013 08:13

This year does seem to lie on the more extreme end of stormy winters.

oricella · 18/12/2013 10:32

It's time for the year's round-ups A year of increasing extreme weather events

GloriaSmud · 19/12/2013 10:03

It certainly has been quite a year weather~wise.

Today's offering from the Express.
Reports of the disruption from last nights storm ~ Daily Mail, Guardian and BBC.

at "Storm Emily". Well for once they are probably quite right about next week, though I'm not sure about two storms colliding Hmm
I wonder how much they get paid? I'm sure I could offer my services, I'd be just as good!

Not too much evidence of damage round here - a very large branch is down. I tried to persuade dh that we could drag it home but hes getting a bit worried that I'm turning the garden into a timber yard.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 19/12/2013 10:44

The years round up is pretty interesting, though the headline is misleading (ever the critic)

HesterShaw · 19/12/2013 11:36

The Express seem to think they're in The Perfect Storm.

GobbySadcase · 20/12/2013 14:08

ITV Meridian are saying we're having a white Christmas on Facebook. Kitten what are your thoughts?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 20/12/2013 15:18

I'm just off to look at the models! This morning on the Christmas weather thread I said: "snow is possible for northern areas, but just perhaps for higher ground of southern areas too.". I'll see if anything has changed....

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 20/12/2013 15:24

The potential is still there on the latest GFS run :) a temporary affair though if it occurs in the south.

GobbySadcase · 20/12/2013 16:11

It just seems so unbelievable with all the mildness about. Hope it happens though Smile

GloriaSmud · 20/12/2013 18:27

Not surprisingly, the Express are quite excited about the possibility of snow!

OP posts:
HesterShaw · 20/12/2013 18:32

"First white Christmas in decades"?????

We just imagined 2010 then?

HesterShaw · 20/12/2013 18:34

The Express really really really (x 1000) don't understand weather forecasting, do they?

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2013 15:13

Amazingly the Express haven't picked up on the coming stormy weather but the Guardian and BBC have.

OP posts:
HesterShaw · 22/12/2013 16:43

The Express doesn't believe in Actual Meteorology, onlys soothsaying.

GloriaSmud · 23/12/2013 09:10

Today's reports from the Daily Mail, Express, Guardian (with live updates and BBC (also with live updates)

A report on the Antarctic mission that's got stuck in the ice. There are some Guardian journalists on board and there's a blog here. (Check out the day by day diary where you can see how many seals, penguins etc have been spotted.)

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 28/12/2013 19:26

The express were almost moderate in today's headlines, though winding people up further about the weather isn't very nice when its not looking as bad.

Antarctic mission is fascinating.

GloriaSmud · 30/12/2013 07:51

The Express and Daily Mail are going for storms battering Britain for a month this morning (what happened to the 3 months worth of snow the Express was forecasting a few weeks ago?)
And today's report on the weather from the Guardian.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 30/12/2013 07:57

And there's been another failed rescue mission to get people off the Akademik Shokalskiy, in the Antarctic. Looks like they'll be seeing the New Year in, stuck in the ice.

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 31/12/2013 11:55

Express got it exactly right for this month didnt it! Hmm

GloriaSmud · 31/12/2013 20:34

They did indeed ~ they can now congratulate themselves in a smug fashion for getting it right (and try to forget the 3 months of snow they forecast a few weeks ago!)

I spotted this in next weeks Radio Times which might be of interest (perhaps will try and do a reminder next week if I remember!)
