A thread to discuss the good and bad reports in the media,TV etc.

Starting with a favourite that's often good for a laugh, the front page of the Daily Express this morning.

There was also this programme Britain's Killer Storms that was on Channel 4 on Sunday. Not sure what it's like but have recorded to watch later.

Interesting article on the current freeze in the USA here and on the recent Ice Storm here

GloriaSmud · 01/01/2014 08:46

Wow manky ~ says something when it's even too cold to go ice skating!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 01/01/2014 09:45

Wow! That's huge in the States. I have some US and Canadian friends posting pics of their snow, but when you see what it means on a grander scale.....

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 01/01/2014 09:45

And cAnada and cAnada. Brain on go slow this am!

mankyscotslass · 01/01/2014 13:25

There have been some serious amounts of Lake Snow as well - they have had a lot more so far this year compared to last, at least in this area

GloriaSmud · 02/01/2014 07:43

I've just been on the weather bit of 'Google maps' and some of the temperatures are down -40C Shock

Looks like the passengers on the Akademik Shokalskiy in Antarctica are about to be rescued!

and more from the USA here

mankyscotslass · 03/01/2014 11:57

and here

GloriaSmud · 04/01/2014 11:35

It's awful in the US ~ might be heading for record breaking low temperatures into Sunday. Daily Mail report here.

Over here, the Express can't keep away from the ice and snow.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/01/2014 11:44

It is awful there - at least 11 deaths from the patest snow storm.

Express should concentrate on the job in hand and focus on what is happening right now.

GloriaSmud · 08/01/2014 11:19

Today's offering from The Express, promising TWO more days of rain and then SNOW will grip Britain.

The Daily Mail has some more amazing pictures from the US here.

Report in The Telegraph about how the mild weather is affecting wildlife. My daffodils and tulips are about an inch high at the moment and I saw my first bumble bee of the year on 2nd January! 'Tis very mild for the time of year.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2014 09:01

The CET tracker says we are 2.68C above the average Jan temp.

It feels more than that though.

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2014 09:58

It does feel like it's been milder than that.

While the weather has calmed down a little in some areas of the country, it's easy to forget that some people are still suffering in the aftermath of the floods. The Daily Mail has pictures here. I'm Shock at the water level in some of the pictures.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2014 10:26

We drove through a very flooded area yesterday. It was pretty shocking.

oricella · 22/01/2014 09:41

Not strictly about the weather - but a great article on flooding nonetheless : the agricultural subsidies angle is an eyeopener

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2014 09:31

Oricella ~ that's an excellent article. It just makes you Sad and Angry at it all.

Reports on yesterdays storm in the Daily Mail and Guardian. In a move that's quite unusual for the Express, it's being quite restrained in its online weather reporting today!

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 13/02/2014 12:58

Another storm of 'epic' proportions for America here

GloriaSmud · 14/02/2014 14:27

The snow seems to go on and on in the US just like the rain here.

These satellite images taken over Somerset are in a lot of papers today.

BBC article about the Jet Stream here

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2014 12:25

That's a really good article ~ especially as it explains what the jet stream actually does. It really goes to show how we're really only just beginning to understand all these different factors when it comes to weather.

The Guardian has a report here on how the repairs are going to rail lines after the storms while the Daily Mail has a report on all the sand that's been dumped across a road at Torcross in Devon Shock

Finally, this happened locally to us and was in a few national papers on Saturday. I hope the poor gentleman recovers (it looks an awfully big and heavy sign) but hope he also has a sense of humour about it as well!

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 18/02/2014 21:20

The Daily Mail has an article here about the number of sinkholes that have opened up because of the saturated ground.

The Guardian are reporting on authorities having to delay burials because of flooding.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 22/02/2014 07:06

The Express today ~ I've never read such a load of rubbish! Looking at the comments, they're readers are thinking the same thing!

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 22/02/2014 16:55

Grin Typical of them really
