Looks like the snow coming across from France has brought an unexpected "extra" - if you're in the south & noticed a funny smell in the air, it seems it's a cloud of mercaptan gas escaped from a factory near Ruen! BBC News says it's smelly but harmless.

pigleychez · 22/01/2013 15:39

Ive heard on FB about this Gas but not smelt it myself.

Just looked at the Met office forecast for us here in West Sussex and 'Sigh' Heavy snow forecast for tonight and light snow all day tomorrow.
Dont get me wrong I love snow but its wearing abit thin now and the school run in the ice and snow isnt fun! Ive already fell over once today and now feel really nervous walking out there. Ive already got a broken rib and worried im going to do more damage or crack another one! I can feel it worse from this mornings slip :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/01/2013 15:40

educatingarti, its a bit odd. I think they cover different time periods though.

Sleet here, temp just beginning to be on the down turn with more snow evident. Trouble is, at the moment its melting what we have. Radar shows precip right across the south coast. Exciting!

butyl-mercaptan is one of the chemicals that skunks spray out Grin

Heavy rain at the moment (and has been all day) and already chaos on the roads. Is it wrong that I have everything crossed for it to turn to snow Wink

Mrcrumpswife · 22/01/2013 15:49

Tortoise we are not supposed to be on the bit with snow predicted today in the SW but what melted this morning with the rain has now gone white again after the down pour of snow we have been having since 2 o clock. With the wind it was horrible on the school run out in the sticks but lovely now we are home safe!

Hope it reaches youSmile

Tortoise · 22/01/2013 15:52

MrCrump We've had quite heavy snow for the hour ish! Not really settling yet because the ground is so wet. But I think it will if it carries on like this and temp drops Grin

fatsatsuma · 22/01/2013 15:54

OYBBK do you think the snow is going to reach us up here in N Oxon? Met Office doesn't seem to think so, but people locally are saying it's coming! I would like to believe them Grin

MyHeadWasInTheSandNowNot · 22/01/2013 16:03

OYBBK Grin Grin Grin God you are good!!!

reastie · 22/01/2013 16:04

OYBBK do you think west kent will get much settling snow tonight? Just got an email from head teacher where I work saying more snow forecasted tonight and potentially school closed tomorrow depending on how bad it is

funkybuddah · 22/01/2013 16:22

Coming down fairly fast in north hampshire, doesnt appear to be settling though.

merlin · 22/01/2013 16:25

Raining here all day on the Dorset coast :(

Also had left a couple of windows open a little and now my house stinks! Bloody French!!!! Grin

MegGriffin · 22/01/2013 16:26

Snowing in west sussex!

duchesse · 22/01/2013 16:37

Half-hearted snow coming down in E Devon now. Big fat flakes mixed with rain. URgh!

Jazzicatz · 22/01/2013 16:48

Snowing quite hard here in Brighton even though they said it was going to rain. Worried now we will be snowed in again!

SilverAndSparklyKat · 22/01/2013 16:48

Soo, according to the met office we are a little too far north in Birmingham for this bout. What do you think Kitten? Another snow day for us tomorrow?

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2013 17:11

I have just seen the BBC forecast and it looks possible that Worcestershire will be getting some more snow tonight. Sad

Haemadoots · 22/01/2013 17:15

Oybbk, please tell me we will get some snow I think we are the only place in Scotland not to have any, am on the cost in angus (crosses fingers and does snow dance)

TeWiSavesTheDay · 22/01/2013 17:17

Oybbk, thanks for the update... do you think the edges of this snow precip will be quite light? We are east south midland and we've had masses already!

JustinMumsnot · 22/01/2013 17:18

Will there be snow in North Devon? We haven't had any yet. Snot fair.

duchesse · 22/01/2013 17:37

Gosh Justin, I was up near Barnstaple at the weekend and there';s loads there above a certain altitude! The road above Martinshoe was impassable without a 4x4

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/01/2013 17:39

fatsatsuma, you might get a little predawn. Not sure how much will settle. If you are rural then you might get a bit of a covering.

reastie, I may well be wrong, but I dont think there will be enough for a snow day I'm afraid, but you never know. at the moment its looking like slow and steady snow fall for you.

I need my local temp to drop and the snow to get heavier. Im fairly sure the snow will get a lot heavier, but this temperature is being stubborn!

BehindLockNumberNine · 22/01/2013 17:43

Snowing in Surrey

oybbk, is there going to be enough for a snow day tomorrow or is it going to fizzle out in the next few hours??

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 22/01/2013 17:46

Snow on the surrey Sussex boarder!!

Smile
LIZS · 22/01/2013 17:47

Snowing here and due to take dd out in half an hour :( (ds reckons we need a "panic" emoticon !) Won't set off if it is still going as cant risk not being able to collect her.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/01/2013 17:50
Shock

my last post was when mn went down. In the meantime I've had my head down writing a very heavy duty document and not noticed what was going on. Just taking a breather, pressed send and then looked out of the window.

Bloody hell, the roads and car are utterly covered and the snow is heavy. dh has to go and get dd and hasnt allowed any extra time to a)clear the car b)negotiate the bonkers traffic.
