GMTV just said Indian Summer next week. I'll believe it when I see it Hmm

Early next week, yes GFS is showing rather warm lovely temps esp in the south then it shows the temps plummeting at the weekend.

tak1ngchances · 18/10/2012 14:13

Plummeting??? Eeeeep! How low, kitten?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/10/2012 14:43

well... remember it is just one model and its a long way off! but at the moment it shows temps Sunday night in the -2 region around the welsh borders (but would prob be lower locally) and then away from the SW and also southern coasts temps in single figures.
However, it does seem to have been a)put back by a couple of days in this latest model run and b)not looking as cold as it was!
So, perhaps not too reliable then Grin

lets look forward to next week if it comes off. I'm looking forward to it!

superb discussion on the different factors that will affect the winter in the US this year, all of which also apply to the uk.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/10/2012 08:26

Models are showing stronger signals for it to turn colder next weekend. At the moment I'd be prepared to wrap up warm for bonfire night!

EugenesAxe · 20/10/2012 08:47

Hmmm. Positives about hard winter (and yes, read in papers they expect snow, possibly over Christmas):
Get to make the most of expensive baby fleece all-in-one I couldn't resist buying for DD.
DH may not be able to get into work.
Snow is fun.

Negatives about hard winter:
Christmas with PIL may be disrupted if travel hard.
May get stuck down with PIL (they are nice, but we are there 5 days already).
Won't be able to get any-bleeding-where.

I'm going to deal with it when it happens...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/10/2012 08:58

Agree with snow is fun. Plus I get all excited about the weather models. Then I feel guilty for being excited as I remember that for many people it causes hardship.

picnicbasketcase · 20/10/2012 09:03

I do hope we have a snowy winter again, as long as the DC's school gives them a snow day every once in a while. Last time they stayed open the whole time so we couldn't go and make snowmen in the park and I was most put out.

*Disclaimer - Yes, I know the school did the right thing by working parents and the pupils really, but I have fond memories of listening to local radio for school closures as a child Blush

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 21/10/2012 09:12

Urgh
I want a winter of my childhool (grey, drizzly, bit cold - you couldn't go out without a jumper :o) as opposed to the ones of my DCs' childhoods (they are 5 and 3 and so far it's been snow, snow, a bit more snow and a fair bit of -15.)

OP posts:
Indith · 21/10/2012 09:18

Now surely your early childhood was like mine? I remember sledging every year in the woods then when we got older the snow just stopped and there was never enough :(

I spotted 2 remaining pairs of Lidl snowboots the other day which suggests that the week dh went to Lidl and came back telling me they didn't have the blender I wanted they did in fact have the snowboots instead which he knew I wanted but is too male to notice Angry. I picked up the blender a couple of days later in the other Lidl which had blenders but no boots. Humph.

Oh well I have ordered them both baby alpaca welly socks so they will have lovely warm feet. Need to get more wellies though. Got myself some yaktrax, don't fancy slipping over with the baby in a sling.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/10/2012 21:42

Still looking for a colder period at the end of the week :)
And fog for many tomorrow. I love fog, it's been years since we've had any real pea soupers.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/10/2012 07:39

Fog locally is a bit pathetic Grin
Probably just as well really.

Indith · 22/10/2012 08:12

Plenty of fog here! And someone on my local FB group said snow is forecast for the weekend. Urgh. October snow will be slippery and slushy and horrible. I really need to do a proper slipper and welly roundup and try on! Hope my yaktrac arrive this week.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 22/10/2012 08:28

snow this weekend?!
Indith, I am maybe only remembering as I got older - I remember year after year of trying to make a snowman with an inch of snow...ah them were the days

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 22/10/2012 08:29

where did you order yaktrax from BTW? Trazzle's link? I'm going to get some ordered

OP posts:
Trazzletoes · 22/10/2012 08:49

You can get Yaktrax from one of those outdoorsy shops too... Can't remember which one. Not millets. Cotswolds? Is that even a shop?!

Trazzletoes · 22/10/2012 08:50

Dear Yaktrax. If you are reading this, I would like to be on commission, please. TIA. Trazzle.

Trazzletoes · 22/10/2012 08:52

SPBB do it! I was heavily pregnant over winter last year and was so so scared of falling. They really work brilliantly.

Natnat29 · 22/10/2012 08:54

My OH will be a very happy man if it is a cold one being a gas engineer and we are expecting our first end of jan so he is putting in for any overtime he can get but I'll be worried what if its too snowy to get to the hosp (yes I am flapping about such situations already!)

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 22/10/2012 08:56

I'm doing it :o FOund them on amazon - does anywhere do child ones? Wish I'd known about them during the really snowy few years when the DC were tiny - I fell over with DD in the sling :(

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 22/10/2012 09:00

I just ordered DS2 a snowsuit... Christmas temps of 30c now forecast by me Grin
