Bah humbug

I got mine off Amazon, just the walkers rather than the Pro ones as I'm unlikely to go running or anything in them unless we are running late for school. If you look at the yaktrax website they go into more detail on sizes and say the extra small walkers are ok from size 11/12 up so I am considering getting a pair of extra smalls and seeing how they fit over ds1's boots but my children are very small of foot so may not fit him this year. Not a waste of money though as they will just get used next year and the year after and the year after etc until thye need the adult ones.

Thanks :) dh is complicating the issue by saying pogus are better. Byt the end of today I will have ordered something!

There are half a million devices. I spent ages reading reviews about things slipping off and studs coming off before I gave up and trusted the wisdom of MN Grin. If you find anything that fits children on your travels then let me know :)

I still have your dd's pants by the way. I really should run them up to you.

And are you coming to the quiz? Am going to book Not that I need to book you the roast beef Grin.

I'd do all that on the meet up thread but you keep abandoning it.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 22/10/2012 10:21

I still have your dd's socks :o
when is the quiz? Not been paying attention recently!

This friday :) Foist the children on the grandparents and drag your dh down for a couple of beers! He and dh can talk rugby or something.

magentastardust · 22/10/2012 16:10

Looking at the yaktrax but a few reviews say because of the design the wire end up cutting the rubber. I walk to school and back every day so need something that will last more than a couple of wears.
Anyone who has bought them found this or has everyone had good experiences with them. I am probably getting to wrapped up in this (wink) but after having some horrendous slippy winters up here in Scotland I am determined to be prepared this year!!

Indith · 22/10/2012 16:22

I've seen that but the ttypes with studs all have some reviews saying the studs fall off so if they don't last the winter I'll be sending them back saying they are not fit for purpose and getting a refund [bolshy].

Trazzletoes · 22/10/2012 16:50

magenta I've not had a problem.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/10/2012 13:16

interesting

the 2m temp graphs graphs show the probability that the 2m temp (which is the standard temp that gets reported by the met office) will be either near normal, above normal or below normal globally. Its not a forecast, just a probability map.

It shows that the model forecasts:
20% or less chance of our winter temps being above normal.
20-40% chance of them being near normal. (apart from Ireland which is below 20%)
60-80% chance of them being less than normal. (Ireland greater than 80% chance)

however if you look at the precip charts, they fall in favour of being drier than normal (40-60% chance)

Global sea temps are interesting too.

Ghouljamaflip · 23/10/2012 13:25

Ooh - so if I've got this right then the 850hpa temp chart is indicating an increased risk of snow? (60-80% chance of lower than normal temp)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/10/2012 13:42

Its certainly one aspect. 850hpa temps are temperatures at very approximately 1.5kms. high They are used for deducing the temperature of air masses (they dont tend to change much day and night as they are usually above the boundary layer)

so yes up there does generally need to be cold :) (below -5C or -7c is often quoted but it depends on the other conditions) but it also needs to be cold closer to the ground too (else it melts!) and of course we need the precipitation else its just cold and dry.

Indith · 23/10/2012 13:42

Woooooosh!

Hear that? That's the sound of it all going over the top of my head.

tak1ngchances · 23/10/2012 14:07

I'm in weather heaven. BBC website has a headline saying Cold weather on the way with wintry flurries. sigh of delight

straighttohellymelly · 23/10/2012 14:22

Just about to buy some yaktrax, but which style is best? The ones with the rubber that fit around the sole or the ones that also have a velcro bit over the top? (would be wearing with boots, (walking boots or Blundstones).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/10/2012 17:07

I went for the velcro ones. they are very good indeed!

As I said tak1ng - getting colder :)
the cold may not get cut off by a low by the way!

tak1ngchances · 23/10/2012 17:10

Eeeeep!!!!

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 23/10/2012 19:39

I cant wait for it to get cold. Bought me a new practical coat as I'm walking loads with the pram, waterproof and fleece lined, then proceeded to lose my lightweight jacket anyway. So having to wear my new coat and I'm blooming melting at the mo!

JudeFawley · 23/10/2012 19:52

I simply love snow days; I hope we get some this year.

I am eyeing up the wood burner from the corner of my eye. It's been too long, old friend.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/10/2012 07:48

Perhaps some wintry stuff for hilly northern areas over the next week:)

tak1ngchances · 25/10/2012 10:08

Are you excited kitten or is it it time to get excited yet?

tak1ngchances · 25/10/2012 10:50

Golly I'm a bad typist. Meant to say is it not time to get excited yet

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/10/2012 12:49

Well, if I had ears that could prick up then they would be pricked up!

DuffyMoon · 25/10/2012 13:06

didnt get any snow last year [hsad]

Ghouljamaflip · 25/10/2012 14:55

Just been out for a walk with the dogs and a couple of friends - the wind has def got a bite to it now.

We were planning our snow day pub visits [hgrin]

Any chance of needing to prick ears in the Cotswolds yet? please please please please please please

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/10/2012 15:20

Just to clarify I'm not terribly excited about next weeks prospects (as I dont live in a hilly northern area!), tis more the winter to comes prospects!
Tis only just coming up to November, winter is yet to come!
