Weather

snow for some this week (not an early April fools joke)

I've held off a little on this, though I've mentioned the possibility on the 'weather warning for gardeners thread'.

this week shows an astonishingly rapid turn around in weather, particularly for those in Scotland who have been having record warmth. Snow looks quite likely to be coming to the northern half of the uk, more so I think down the Eastern side. It looks likely to start Monday night, progressing further south into the Pennine region into Tuesday, where some significant accumulation could occur. Of course hilly areas are more susceptible, but it is rather possible there will be snow cover down to low levels.

Further south, sleet or cold rain is more likely.

GFS shows highs of 0C in northern Scotland on tuesday!!!

Updates in the run up :)

Well it's sunny this morning!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/04/2012 07:21

DH was in Edinburgh in snow yesterday

BiscuitNibbler · 04/04/2012 07:43

Snowing in the Midlands this morning. Not settling though, the ground is too wet.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 04/04/2012 07:52

Magic rain shield is still in action over the south of England. Radar shows a good amount of snow over parts of northern England and Wales. Is there anyone on Bodmin or dartmoor? Interested as to whether there is snow there?

We've had an 'orrible night, wind and rain (or whatever it was!) all night. We now seem to be having a sleety rain. These static caravans sure aren't designed for this sort of weather!

mankyscotslass · 04/04/2012 08:34

Wind was awful overnight, woke to large fluffy flakes drifting down.

No sign of it sticking though - everything is too wet.

SIL in Glossop is fed up, and the SIL in Wales is snowed in!

Eggsits · 04/04/2012 09:12

We have loads and loads of the fecking stuff here. Not been able to get up to the stables yet but others tell me there are 4' drifts up there.

No snow nr London but we are driving home later and there appears to have been plenty of snow back in Sheffield. Just hoping it will follow the forecast and stop soon so roads are clear for our drive back this afternoon.

MNHelenisPansfavourite · 04/04/2012 12:58

Ok - Glossop calling, and four panels of the garden fence blown off and mashed up against the shed, which is now sans felt-covering. Horizontal sleet being blown, and slush in the road.

April is indeed the cruelest month.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 04/04/2012 13:49

Sounds posititivly disgusting!

Some interesting footage on the news....

We had the local news on at 1.30 and there's been 7ft drifts on the N.York moors. We've not had anything but when we were out earlier, we could see snow on the hills in the distance, so the snowy stuff isn't far away!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 04/04/2012 15:16

7ft drifts!
That's errrrm, rather impressive!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 04/04/2012 20:09

The photos on the news were great!! I didn't realise that so much snow was due in Scotland/NE England.

Lovely morning here, grey miserable afternoon, definite temp drop this evening!! (Surry/Hants/Berks border)

Eggsits · 04/04/2012 22:45

Oh err - the BBC 10 O'clock news had pics of a snow plough stuck in Saddleworth - the plough was stuck next to the field my pony lives in! Fame at last.

Had to dig out all the stables and feed room when I finally got there at 1pm.

habbibu · 04/04/2012 23:59

We had a 12 hour powercut. I taught ds tiddlywinks. Still plenty of lying snow here, west of inverness, and couldn't get down the drive yesterday because all the willows were bent to the floor.

GloriaSmud · 05/04/2012 08:04

Quite a cold night here - there's frost on the car this morning.
Some other things I've learnt about this snow event (that everyone else except us had!) the Pickering - Whitby road across the moors was closed for most of yesterday. It was also mentioned on the local news last night that Yorkshire had its worst April snow for 40 years!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 05/04/2012 08:22

Eggsits, what a way to claim fame Grin

habbibu, that is pretty long!

Have to say I've been rather taken aback by the snow amounts, I thought some parts might end up with 10cm - rather an underestimate!

Kayzr · 05/04/2012 08:23

Ooooh Gloria you might live near me. I was in a huge panic about the Pickering-Whitby road yesterday.

Well today is wedding day and we have glorious sun here in Pickering!! GrinGrinGrin

ohyouBadBadkitten · 05/04/2012 08:29

Splendid Kayzr :) I hope you have a wonderful day!!!

GloriaSmud · 05/04/2012 09:10

Kayzr (if you get to read this as you're probably busy!) Normally I'm in Leicester but we're on holiday, between York and Thirsk atm. I do know Pickering (have stayed at Keldy before) and know the Pickering-Whitby Road.
Have a lovely day - looks like it's going to be warmer and the sun's going to shine for you!

PuffofSmoke · 10/04/2012 10:43

Why did nobody tell me it was coming?! Had about 4 inches fall in the last couple of hours and still falling. Got a job interview this afternoon too. Sad

ohyouBadBadkitten · 10/04/2012 11:16

Puff, you are incredibly unlucky. The precip band as far as I can see is almost entirely rain with sleet in places.
Good luck for your interview.
(ps, even weather watchers take a break sometimes)

Thats okay - your forgiven! Unexpected even for here, Mum did say not to 'cast a clout till May is oot' but I ignored her and put out my bedding plants. Sad DD is delighted however - building a snowman! Grin

ohyouBadBadkitten · 10/04/2012 15:17

Building a snowman Grin
It's being a funny old season isn't it!? Dd here has been digging out her pond. We came in as a heavy shower (rain) is falling.
