snow for some this week (not an early April fools joke)

I've held off a little on this, though I've mentioned the possibility on the 'weather warning for gardeners thread'.

this week shows an astonishingly rapid turn around in weather, particularly for those in Scotland who have been having record warmth. Snow looks quite likely to be coming to the northern half of the uk, more so I think down the Eastern side. It looks likely to start Monday night, progressing further south into the Pennine region into Tuesday, where some significant accumulation could occur. Of course hilly areas are more susceptible, but it is rather possible there will be snow cover down to low levels.

Further south, sleet or cold rain is more likely.

GFS shows highs of 0C in northern Scotland on tuesday!!!

Updates in the run up :)

I knew this would be your thread, kitten Smile

This is the most wonderful thing about British weather - like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get Grin

I can remember sunbathing in a bikini in mid March in W London one year
& cricket being snowed off
& getting frozen ears walking to work in Ealing in June another year

atm here (E Lancs) it's mild enough for mad DS & friends to sit outside drinking wine

Good to hear the snow reports :)

Uk weather is ace Ponders!

Update - it is belting down now. And lying. We will be building snowmen in the morning!

FloridPayolas · 02/04/2012 22:49

Snowing in Inverness. Sad

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 03/04/2012 03:06

Sorry, Chipping, missed your question earlier. Yes, it was settling, but also second-hand info, as it came from a Friend In the North. I am south of Glasgow, it's just pissing down just now, but no snow yet.

VJayazzle · 03/04/2012 06:45

There's 6 inches of snow on the ground here, just spent ages getting it off dh's car so he can go to work. We didn't get this much snow in winter!!!

GloriaSmud · 03/04/2012 07:11

Reporting in from a static caravan just north of York! Just as the metoffice said, we've got heavy rain and looks like it's going to be like this most of the day. Looking at the metoffice website, we might get something of a sleety/snowy nature tonight.

oricella · 03/04/2012 07:22

invernessshire calling - close to 10 cm and still falling; doesn't look like it will stop anytime soon

ginmakesitallok · 03/04/2012 07:23

Snow lying in Dundee - between 2cm (DPs estimate) and 6 (mine) ffs

Piffpaffpoff · 03/04/2012 07:26

Judging by the garden table, we've got at least 15cm, maybe even 20 in Aviemore. It seems to have stopped now. Kids are going to be beside themselves when they wake up!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 03/04/2012 09:09

Good morning!
All I can say is 'wow'! some very impressive amounts here.

Gloria, it does seem that the worst of the rain is preceding the cold air in that region. Ah well, is ever the nature of forecasting!

As for down here. Another pleasant day until the rain arrives this evening, light at first. Supposed to get heavier into dawn, but sods law says it wont. We seem to have some sort of rain barrier. And to think I didnt water the plants yesterday in anticipation of a decent rainfall.

Labradorlover · 03/04/2012 10:37

Just been out with the dogs.......
Wind is North Easterly and brutal....

ohyouBadBadkitten · 03/04/2012 11:28

So funny, I've been out in a light jumper and jeans watering my seeds.

VJayazzle · 03/04/2012 11:36

I've been out in thick coat, wellies, hat and gloves with my snow shovel shovelling a path to my front door in the vague hope that asda will be able to deliver my shopping Confused

ohyouBadBadkitten · 03/04/2012 11:45

Such a bizarre contrast!!! Looking at the surface pressure chart, it appears that the forecast low pressure developed further north than the models suggested, hence the lots of snow for parts of Scotland and the Pennines seeming to miss out.

Reporting in again. We seem to have some sort of gale going on out there! We've got blustery winds and something falling from the sky but not sure whether it's rain, sleet or snow. The forecast said we might have some snow by morning, which is going to be a slight problem if we want to go out in it as I didn't pack wellies!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 03/04/2012 22:09

Could be hail Gloria, I've spotted some on the radar.

OP posts:
ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 03/04/2012 22:39

We had hail at about 5pm. Quite mild here. No rain. I wonder what tomorrow will bring :) The snow looked so lovely on the news.

whojamaflip · 03/04/2012 23:02

Glos / Oxon border calling - just been out to check the sheep in a t-shirt. Lovely mild night with only a little bit of drizzle blowing in the breeze. Def warmer than it was during the day.

v Envy of those with snow though

Eggsits · 03/04/2012 23:08

It is snowing in Saddleworth.

MNHelenisPansfavourite · 03/04/2012 23:15

bugger. Now snowing in Glossop, just east of Saddleworth.
