Weather

snow for some this week (not an early April fools joke)

I've held off a little on this, though I've mentioned the possibility on the 'weather warning for gardeners thread'.

this week shows an astonishingly rapid turn around in weather, particularly for those in Scotland who have been having record warmth. Snow looks quite likely to be coming to the northern half of the uk, more so I think down the Eastern side. It looks likely to start Monday night, progressing further south into the Pennine region into Tuesday, where some significant accumulation could occur. Of course hilly areas are more susceptible, but it is rather possible there will be snow cover down to low levels.

Further south, sleet or cold rain is more likely.

GFS shows highs of 0C in northern Scotland on tuesday!!!

Updates in the run up :)

OYBBK - We're off to Snowdonia on Easter Saturday with the dcs for their first camping trip - please, please, please tell me its not going to be so cold we put them off for life?

I'm seriously unimpressed with the weather at the mo - have had to tuck my early peas up in fleece and all my poor seedlings have now been moved out of the greenhouse and into the spare room Confused

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 01/04/2012 21:12

oh I do like a good weather thread OYBBK Grin

What's it looking like for inner hebrides? Do I need to start knitting wee coats for the new lambs which have been up and gamboling in the sun within the hour this last week?!

Kayzr congrats on the wedding and hope it all goes beautifully Smile (we were on the wagon threads a few years back if I recall correctly?)

ohyouBadBadkitten · 01/04/2012 21:15

Depending on how high you are camping it shouldn't be too terrible. Temps at low altitude should be 10 c plus according to gfs at the moment whojam? Light winds but probably cloudy. Lost a week to go though, so things could change.

Bigteuch, brrrrrr, those poor little lambkins. You do seem to miss the worst of it with warmer temps and the precip possibly missing you.

Might it be a bad idea to go for a caravan holiday in Northumberland on Tuesday, then?

[worried]

ohyouBadBadkitten · 01/04/2012 23:00

I would take warm clothing, hot water bottles and plenty of food opener!

The snow will start in Scotland over night to night, a sharp thermal gradient exists across the cold front that is sweeping south!

Tomorrow the cold progresses down the Uk. interestingly, snow could come rather further south tomorrow night than the models first showed. Does look like some sort of precip for everyone tomorrow (I hope so! whilst my rainfall (or lack of) stats are becoming fascinating, it is getting increasingly desperate)

weds (according to gfs) starts wet and cold. Perhaps some snow in Eastern England (around about the Bedfordshire latitude but perhaps further south than that!) In general could be quite a grim day!

Thurs - gfs shows temps warming a little and rain fizzling out. Sharp frost possible that night - watch out!

Good Fri (remember this is a little way off and may change) - at the moment showing a substantial improvement. Not warm, but warmer and dry.

Easter Sat - warming up still a little more but probably cloudy and perhaps a bit damp.

Easter Sunday and Easter Monday similar to Easter Saturday. High pressure builds over the UK again.

I knew I'd find you here OYBBK!
It looks so sunny and beautiful here, and slightly warmer today than yesterday, it's hard to believe the forecast of snow. NE Hants here. BBC reckons it'll arrive 4am wed...
Guess I need to do something outdoorsy with the kids today then!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/04/2012 10:17

I would absolutely make the most of today!

Snow has already started in Sutherland.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/04/2012 15:49

Crikey, earlier than I expected. Lovely down south, wandering round garden in a jumper and jeans.

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 02/04/2012 16:13

lovely day here today too, although quite a biting wind.

oricella · 02/04/2012 18:43

snow travelling south from Sutherland; still mixed in with rain but temperature is plummeting and notable slush on the patio

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 02/04/2012 19:02

ITV has just said rain in the morning but brightening in the afternoon with 12 deg Hmm

OldLady - is it settling?

Need some photos from you people with snow :)

Kayzr · 02/04/2012 19:07

Is it still looking ok for Thursday?

It's been ok here. A bit cold but not too bad. Chucking it down now.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/04/2012 19:27

Thursday looks good kayzr dry but a bit chilly.

Chipping does look like we will miss any snow down here after all. Cold temps won't hit til tomorrow night. Even then they aren't too bad.

Looking forward to rain!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 02/04/2012 19:29

It would help me out enormously if it would rain all of Wed & all of Thur :)

habbibu · 02/04/2012 19:33

Snowing pretty heavily and sticking here in Invernesshire. Really weird - I arrived in birkenstocks...

VJayazzle · 02/04/2012 21:24

Yes it's white outside and still coming down. Wonder what we'll wake up to tomorrow. Hard to remember I was in tshirts and sunglasses last week!

whomovedmychocolate · 02/04/2012 21:26

Waterbutts at the ready in anticipation. Will take in the tender poor darling plants tomorrow and hope for the best.

Piffpaffpoff · 02/04/2012 21:33

I'm in Aviemore and we've had snow sleet and rain here but no snow lying - yet.

What was odd though was that we were out this afternoon for a walk and DH and I both noticed it suddenly got noticeably colder all of a sudden. Like, in a matter of minutes we had to zip up our coats, get the DCs hats/gloves on etc. It was weird!
