Icelandic volcano - Grimsvotn eruption

starting a thread here about it as it is possible there may be some air travel disruption perhaps from it. I don't think it will be on the scale of Eyjaf from what i've been reading but it is possible that the back edge of tomorrows storm may bring the ash over uk space. If it does then the amount of disruption caused will depend on the type of ash (at the moment coarser I believe than Eyjafs eruption, so less likely to hang around) and the height and density of the plume. I'll spend a bit of time later trawling the boards and news to try and get a better feel for probabilities.

AF - even if the ash cloud blows back this way on Friday that still gives a clear few days for it to blow away in time for Monday.

I have been warning DH that I dont care how I get there, but I WILL be going to Majorca on Monday, even if I have to buy an inflatable dinghy and bloody paddle there!

I dont really understand the "concentration forecast" either.

I know the red stuff is the worst so how can the forecast starts off entirely blue but by the last one there is a huge red bit when the volcano is supposedly calmimg down. Surely the ash should be dissipating rather than concentrating its density iykwim.

yup, another wrinkle

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/05/2011 07:50

each 6 hour period is broken into 3 heights - with FL000-FL2000 being from the ground to 20000ft so the area that is most of concern for takes offs and landings. The red area shown last night and today moving towards us a little is the ash that was blown over the north atlantic coming back to haunt us.

However today it looks much better :) a lot less red on the map - the ash is dissipating nice and quickly. if Grimsvotn stays quiet then this is very positive indeed.

I was going to ask that question re. the heights

the different maps showing different numbers and varying red bits for the same time frame, that is

I wasn't sure which one was the critical height for planes, ie. the one I need to worry about

AnyF · 26/05/2011 12:20

have a great time, GM Smile

OYBK thanks for the links and advice! Any sign of volcanic ash reappearing?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/05/2011 08:39

you are welcome KMM :) no signs of anything but low level activity. Hooray!

The government's appointed an Ash Scientist' to sort us out next time we're affected by ash!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/06/2011 09:28

Do you reckon anything would satisfy some of the airlines who seem to think the ash was entirely fictitious? Grin

OYBK got here fine, just sodding building work going on next door from 6.30am :(
But! The sun is shining! :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/06/2011 09:57
