Icelandic volcano - Grimsvotn eruption

starting a thread here about it as it is possible there may be some air travel disruption perhaps from it. I don't think it will be on the scale of Eyjaf from what i've been reading but it is possible that the back edge of tomorrows storm may bring the ash over uk space. If it does then the amount of disruption caused will depend on the type of ash (at the moment coarser I believe than Eyjafs eruption, so less likely to hang around) and the height and density of the plume. I'll spend a bit of time later trawling the boards and news to try and get a better feel for probabilities.

I have been cycling round like a loony trying to get all my jobs done as fast as possible this morning - so I'm back Grin (might be getting slightly obsessive about wanting to know the latest!)

cup of tea, sandwich and I'll have a look at the latest...

One of the sources of information from which I teach myself is a website meted. It has a lot of meteorology modules that you can study. They've released two modules today about volcanic ash. If you have time and are interested it is well worth signing up for - free.

Latest concentration map shows that for 6am tomorrow it looks touch and go for Glasgow and Edinburgh but further south it looks ok.

Grin It is a very interesting subject!
I've just done the MetEd modules I referred to above. v. interesting - talks in general about volcanic hazards. Its a bit basic though and doesnt really help us with this too much. The other modules are due out later in the year - wish they would hurry up with them.

1555:

The official report also says the ash plume now reaches 3-5km in the air, down from 8-10km yesterday.
1554:

The latest official report from Iceland says there is "decreased activity". The volcano is now projecting about 100 tonnes of material per second, down from 1,000 tonnes of material last night, and 10,000 tonnes on Sunday.
1552:

A Nats spokesman says forecasts show the ash is starting to disperse.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 24/05/2011 16:08

Hope this perks you up even more AF x
