Icelandic volcano - Grimsvotn eruption

starting a thread here about it as it is possible there may be some air travel disruption perhaps from it. I don't think it will be on the scale of Eyjaf from what i've been reading but it is possible that the back edge of tomorrows storm may bring the ash over uk space. If it does then the amount of disruption caused will depend on the type of ash (at the moment coarser I believe than Eyjafs eruption, so less likely to hang around) and the height and density of the plume. I'll spend a bit of time later trawling the boards and news to try and get a better feel for probabilities.

Grin

looking very good for tomorrow Scroll down to the charts near the bottom - no red near us :)
Flights might be a bit disrupted and all but if those predictions hold true then it is ace news combined with diminishing volcanic activity.

OYBK, please please predict the weather with your crystal ball for Sunday!! We are supposed to fly from Newcastle to Larnaca....

AnyFucker · 24/05/2011 20:19

happy for it to be good tomorrow for all those peeps

but what about Monday

I want it to get better and bloody well stay better, not come back again like that bastard Eyjafthingumybob did !

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/05/2011 20:35

oh blimey - I wish I had a volcano crystal ball!! I really don't know whether the volcano will be a pain for you KMM - the weather looks pretty similar to as it is at the moment tbh - pretty unsettled towards your way but at the moment nothing scary showing up!

Glad things seem to be improving. Bigthink's view of things along with that of the Icelandic Met Office.

AnyFucker · 24/05/2011 21:15

that BigThink blog is really measured and interesting

Sky News coverage is pissing me off...so bloody scaremongering !

Leverkusen · 24/05/2011 21:27

OYBK...your good news giving has made my day!

sb6699 · 24/05/2011 23:39

AF - it is NOT coming back for Monday!

It is not allowed Grin

sb6699 · 24/05/2011 23:40

Seriously, if Sky is scaremongering switch to the BBC News channel. Its far more optimistic.

AnyFucker · 25/05/2011 07:13

Daybreak weather forecast says the wind direction at the weekend is going to blow the ash back this way again !!

I need to stop watching tv, reading newspapers and online news channels

gah

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/05/2011 07:13

looking splendid today :) happy flying everyone! (who is flying today!)
Some disruption to north German airports though.

stansted flying in and out ok

geordieminx · 25/05/2011 08:01

Whooooo hooooo

Flying out tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

Am feeling far happier now, although have so much to do, as didn't feel like dong anything other than drinking tea and eating biscuits earlier in the week.

See that the wind is forecast to change north south on Friday... Hope not as parents are flying then.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/05/2011 08:12

hopefully by the time the direction of the wind changes the volcano will have subsided enough not to be an issue :)

Good ideaGrin

god I have so much to do (((((wails))))))

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/05/2011 08:48

This blogger thinks that this eruption is over :) It has a slightly cautious note in it - it doesnt mean that there wont be more eruptions but for now hopefully I hope all of you travelling can breathe a little easier. Just need to clear any ash that is still up there. I'll have a look at the concentration maps this afternoon.

OYBK, how's NCL-LCA looking for Sunday? Whaddya reckon?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/05/2011 09:15

I think that as long as Grimsvoltn behaves (no more big eruptions) then you have a really good chance of it being ok KMM. The weather is still very mobile and I think that any ash that wanders into our area over the next couple of days will quickly move off. As things stand I don't think you need to be concerned :)

I'm due to be flying out of Heathrow on Friday at 5pm and the MET office is saying that by Friday the ash will be back!! Any chance they could be wrong?!? I'm not getting much done here, just sitting in front of computer hoping that ash clouds will magically disappear from forecasts Sad

GloriaSmud · 25/05/2011 11:03

Miroam ~ heard the Transport Secretary on the news this morning, say that it might blow our way again later in the week. Sad

Metoffice's latest ashcast says that the eruption might have stopped, although they're waiting confirmation of this.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/05/2011 14:22

Miroam I can't really comment on how much ash there will be but if there is ash still present then unfortunately the weather conditions on Friday could bring some of the remaining ash into our airspace.

I think you can take some comfort in that yesterday's problem was pretty short lived and only bothered 'up north'. I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but to my untrained eyes Friday looks similar at the moment to yesterdays conditions.

Thanks for your replies. I guess it's just a case of hoping for the best. Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/05/2011 20:53

concentration forecast looking very good for tomorrow :)
Grimsvotn hasnt entirely gone to sleep again I'm afraid - iceland metoffice but it is quieter.

I have found several more grey hairs

Wotznotnow · 25/05/2011 23:27

"concentration forcast" graphs and ash forcast look all so random, infact they look like my kids have drawn all over them - as much use as, for me to make any sense out of them anyway.
