Heavy rain/thunderstorms over the weekend?

Thought it might be interesting to note who ends up having the heavy rain/thunderstorms that they're forecasting for some areas of the country over the weekend.

We had cloud first thing and a few heavy spots of rain about 20 minutes ago but the sun's beginning to come out now and it's quite humid.

Winchester, Hampshire, Thunder, and torrential rain!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 09:25

oh constance - you'll be shattered later! Gloria - you are still on the first bout rather than the potentially interesting bout!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 09:29

We won't know if there are going to be severe storms this evening until later today. If the cloud clears and the temps get into the 20's, then there could be some potentially very interesting and quite severe storms.

I'm going to be out all afternoon (typical!) so well worth reporting when and where the sun is breaking through (away from EA and the far SE) and temps. That will give people an idea is things are likely to happen.

nicolamumof3 · 07/05/2011 09:52

Heavy rain about 1amish here in kent again first thing this morning and about half an hour ago. But still very warm, and sun is trying to come back out. Please i hope so, parents taking the ds's out for day so i can have a break (30w pg with no.4 and terrible spd)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 10:02

If anyone is in the Christchurch bay area would be very interested in reports of last nights storm - or send reports to tORRO please

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 10:11

blush can I delete my 'away from EA and the far SE' please. Potential there too!!

Basically, pretty much everywhere is at risk this evening and tonight if the sun comes out and the temps rise!

Portsmouth - update from last night- continued thunder and some infrequent lightning at quite long intervals through night. Loud anf prolonged thunder- really big. Fresh storm rolled in 6 am off the sea. Thunder, lightning, torrential rain for about 45 mins- 1 hr, eased since.

Currently- blowy, sunshine, some higher altitude cloud cover. Fresher, cool feel not very warm.

MigratingCoconuts · 07/05/2011 10:14

marking my spot to watch developments. love a good storm! Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 10:15

Here in central southern England the sun is already breaking through! (v. exciting!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 10:16

gruber - the needles saw a gust of 81mph during last nights storm :)

gruber · 07/05/2011 10:20

OYBBK I have to say it sounded like it! Glad I'm not going sailing this weekend across the Solent... Might be dry now but I can feel the tension in the atmosphere!

AnnieLobeseder · 07/05/2011 10:20

We were woken up at 6am by the biggest flash and bang I've ever seen/heard in the UK, with some smaller grumbles here and there.

My neighbour says on FB that it wasn't thunder, it was an explosion in a neighbouring street, but I'm very sure it was lightning/thunder. So I'm guessing the lightning actually struck in that street! Scary! Apparently the whole road were out in their PJs and the fire service were there.

Nothing on Google about what happened.....

We've had a bit of rain, doesn't look like much but I guess whatever there was would have soaked up into the extremely dry ground very quickly.

GloriaSmud · 07/05/2011 10:40

It just carries on raining here in Leicester. Occasionally it gets a little lighter but at the moment it's all grey cloud to the west and a slightly lighter grey cloud to the east. Really hope it isn't going to be like this all day; I want the cloud to break, the sun to come out and the temps to rise and then we get the possibility of thunderstorms later.

And because we've had some rain, I've just spotted a monster~sized snail going up the wall of my greenhouse!

It sounds pretty scary Annie - any feedback about peoples tvs etc? quite a good time for it to go bang like that as at least a lot of electrical things would be turned off.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 10:43

oh Grouchy :( I hope you canget out for a bit you must feel stir crazy!

hugglymugly · 07/05/2011 11:19

Got woken up around 7 by sound of rain and rumbles of thunder. Rain cleared about an hour or so ago. The local (online) weather station reports 14.2 mm of rain.

grouchy Looking at the Meteox radar, there's more coming up from the south, but there's a gap before the next lot, so hopefully you'll be able to get out today.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 11:53

ok chaps, I'm out for the afternoon. We have clouded over here and temps are static at 16.4C (lower than expected), so may be nothing down here? Keep those sunshine and temp reports coming in - they could give a big clue!

AnnieLobeseder · 07/05/2011 11:53

Considering how close that strike was (if it wasn't an unrelated explosion) I was actually surprised that all our electricals were OK. I think it takes a pretty direct strike to blow things up.

I walked down the road in question earlier and no sign of any damage.

GloriaSmud · 07/05/2011 12:01

Grouchy ~ I think huggly's right; there's a gap before the next lot moves in. Hope it gives you enough time to be able get out. Looks like the bright, calm bit has hit Leicester; the sun's just come out.

Calm, cool, cloudy with patchy sunshine. Bit of a breeze. Not muggy yet- Portsmouth.

mankyscotslass · 07/05/2011 13:06

Heavyish showers and very muggy here, no more thunder/lighning since yesterday evening, or at least none that I heard!

GloriaSmud · 07/05/2011 15:05

We've had some odd spells of sunshine but it's cloudy here. It's very muggy though and the temperature (according to my garden thermometer) is up to 23C.

mankyscotslass · 07/05/2011 15:09

Have chanced a washing on the line.

Tortoise · 07/05/2011 16:27

Clouding over in Somerset. Muggy and around 20 deg. Stayed dry all day after this mornings rain, got a load of washing dry.
