Heavy rain/thunderstorms over the weekend?

Thought it might be interesting to note who ends up having the heavy rain/thunderstorms that they're forecasting for some areas of the country over the weekend.

We had cloud first thing and a few heavy spots of rain about 20 minutes ago but the sun's beginning to come out now and it's quite humid.

rain heavy but not torrential here at the moment.

hugglymugly · 06/05/2011 19:45

I'm on a laptop too, but only for convenience. I had considered unplugging all the computery things, as per sensible advice, but that would mean moving my heavy desk and scrabbling around on the floor to reach the plugs. Which would result in being covered by all the dusty and manky stuff that's been lurking there. Of course, if we get zapped, it'd take out the modem anyway.

Lots of radar blobs over the Somerset area, and now encroaching onto the Dorset coast. Just been outside, wall-to-wall white cloud. I'm near Winchester, so should get something. So near....

latest tORRO update Quite exciting Grin

I think the initial storms from france have died a bit travelling across the channel but hopefully that will get better.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/05/2011 20:38

Blush we have a UPS back up for our pc and modem. Not failsafe protection but its a bit of a barrier. Didnt actually get it cos of storms but because it only takes a fox to sneeze round here and the power goes out.

mankyscotslass · 06/05/2011 20:59

The storm only lasted a little while, but when we went to collect eldest Manky the air was acrid and smelled of electicity.

The rain didn't last long and the ground was already drying as we got home.

It's started again now though, the cats are totally disgusted and are sat looking out the cat flap, obviously blaming me!

BigBoats · 06/05/2011 21:39

Thunder and lightning over the I.O.W.

hugglymugly · 06/05/2011 21:56

manky, I know what you mean about your cats. Our last two used to be the same - if all was well they'd mostly ignore us, if all was bad they'd definitely blame us. Grin

BigBoats, I keep looking at the rainfall radar, and looking outside, but nothing so far. But if you're getting storms over the island then hopefully we'll get something soon.

beachyhead · 06/05/2011 22:01

Wow big boats, I'm near Chichester and there's nothing here yet!

BigBoats · 06/05/2011 22:05

We're on the SE coast of the Island, still going strong here, the lightning is quite impressive!

hugglymugly · 06/05/2011 22:18

Rain!!! Grin

usualsuspect · 06/05/2011 22:22

gruber · 06/05/2011 22:22

Portsmouth, huge thunder/lightning, massive rain. Lasted about 7 minutes & gone now.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/05/2011 22:23

Is peak district, going to get rain. Am camping right now.

beachyhead · 06/05/2011 22:35

Just hit Chichester......Brighton, it's coming your way

droitwichmummy · 06/05/2011 22:38

Loads of lightening with some thunder then a downpour W Birmingham/N Worcestershire about an hour ago (made driving home interesting - gave the motorway a miss!). Rain has just about stopped in Droitwich now.

Feels much fresher - lovelySmile

GloriaSmud · 07/05/2011 07:06

We've had rain; I suppose 'a good soaking' would be a good description as it's dampened the ground enough to give us a few small puddles. It feels fresher outside but don't think that's going to last long, with the sun coming up.

Morning all, not checked the models yet - but YAWN - thunder started at 4am and its been rolling around ever since - but all high level stuff. Measured 7.5mm over night - but some of the rain was torrential and my rain guage can lose a bit under those circs (it bounces out!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 07:17

unsure of what will happen today!
For the south: I think the storms will die away to leave a really muggy, overly warm feel under cloud and light rain. unpleasant. If the cloud clears this afternoon it could really set up some decent storms. Rain tonight.

For northern England (actually including north midlands up) I think parts are under a risk of some really significant storms today if it gets going in the way it might. Possible hail, c-g lightning etc. However, it again depends on what happens to the overnight storms - if they leave lots of clag and 'debris' then this could inhibit storm development.

Take care today :)

Tortoise · 07/05/2011 07:32

I didn't hear any thunder last night. Raining heavily this morning.

GloriaSmud · 07/05/2011 08:08

Think things might be happening already for us, OYBBK. Very dark sky to the west and we've just had a thundery shower. I just stood at the kitchen window, wondering what this wet stuff falling from the sky was!

Netweather have weather alerts out for heavy rain/thunderstorms.

Paschaelina · 07/05/2011 08:14

Just light rain here which is clearing away and sun is out. No storms for us.

ConstanceFelicity · 07/05/2011 08:20

I didn't sleep well because I was scared of what was coming.
It hasn't come yet :)
Blue sky

Thunderstorm & rain here last night (Gloucestershire) first rain in weeks! And typical as DH was going to cut the grass today & now it's too wet & looking like more is on the way!

On the bright side the plants & veggies are now looking very perky! :o
