what do you think? will the uk be buried under 6 foot of snow, or will cheltenham be cold, wet and windy?

could someone explain why the weather warning section of the met office page can warn of heavy snow but the rainfall chart show no precipitation expected at all? Which do i believe? or is it not as easy as that?

Moved over from the Thursday thread where OYSSK saved our Christmas. Xmas Smile
Good luck to everyone who is trying to sort out travel plans for important reasons - unlike me. Having a cosy day in enjoying the very pretty snow scene.

Gretel - I think tuesday is as good a day as any. I wouldnt leave it until wednesday if the current models are reasonable accurate.
I've really tried to work out which route I would take and tbh I've not got the foggiest. If only you could go from Holyhead to Belfast by ferry!

I will need to travel Perth to Newcastle on wednesday - what are my chances? I dont want to take any risks with 2 kids in the car (one a new baby) but most of my 4 year old's pressies are down there (for birthday and xmas)

OYBBK, I think you need to start charging Grin

Then I would have to get it right Wilf Xmas Grin

Unmentioned. Bear in mind that there is a huge uncertainty in the forecast through the week. models are still trying to get a handle on tomorrow! At the moment there is nothing major showing for the nE into Scotland for wednesday - just the pesky ever hanging on stuff grazing the coast and penetrating as showers.

Here I am OYSSK Xmas Smile

Looking for advice re travelling from Glasgow to Newcastle on Christmas Eve please.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 19/12/2010 14:09

Hello Earthmother :) remembering that the forecast will almost certainly be different by the time we get to Christmas eve.... at the moment it looks very cold with a subzer day time high again. GFS does show that you would be travelling through light snow. one to keep an eye on.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 19/12/2010 14:09

subzer=subzero!

Is the weather being all unpredictable at the moment? Metcheck keep claiming that we have had no snow at all and are not managing to predict anything correctly.

We are trying to decide whether H should drive to work tomorrow morning (Birmingham to London) or work from home.

Anyone know how the M40 is doing? I heard it was bad earlier.

It was freezing in Stockport this afternoon, showing -1 on the car.

The snow that fell Friday night is showing no sign of going.

Right OYBBK you amazing lady, my sister is wanting to travel from Dumfries to Campbeltown Monday or Tuesday. Do u think she would be taking her life in her hands? We all think so but she wont listen to us Sad

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 19/12/2010 15:16

I'm I'm correct, then the metcheck postcode weather finder is all automated with no human forecaster influence. The models really are very very all over the place at the moment so I wouldn't choose metcheck as something to rely on at the moment.

I'm waiting for the next GFS model update (should be in about 45 minutes and then I'll relay the latest :)

updated met office warnings if you are in the SW or southern Wales please take note that tomorrows snow could well be very heavy.

Report
duckyfuzz · 19/12/2010 15:36

kitten we've been on orange alret for heavy snow all day and not seen a flake (yet!) - do you think met office are now hedging their bets?

Report
PfftTheMagicDragon · 19/12/2010 15:40

Thanks, OYBBK

Orange alert is for other conditions as well, we have one for widespread icy roads
