what do you think? will the uk be buried under 6 foot of snow, or will cheltenham be cold, wet and windy?

duckyfuzz · 21/12/2010 14:44

Temp is -0.5c now, windscreen washers are working at last!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 14:51

Hoora y -that must make things a bit easier!

sarahfreck · 21/12/2010 14:57

My windscreen washers were frozen this morning too. I only realised once I got on the motorway (fortunately only for a local journey). The engine heat had defrosted it by the time I came to go home though! :D

sarahfreck · 21/12/2010 15:37

SadMum has just asked outright if I could go down and pick them up and take them to my sister's. Before that it was just my thoughts.

Dunno if I fancy driving through so much snow. I think it depends a bit just how much snow is tipped over the Midlands tomorrow and how much that affects the motorways for Thursday.

I could also maybe drive down to Glos on Friday (giving an extra 24 hours to sort out the roads after Wednesday) and take my parents up to sister's on Christmas Day. At least the roads would be quieter.

Oh decisions decisions!
Better wait and see a) how my Dad is tomorrow ( Mum said he is better today than yesterday anyway) and b) how much more snow there is!

OYSSK
When I looked on the Met Office webpage earlier there were no amber warnings for Midlands for tomorrow. Is that because they don't think it is going to be as bad as recent snowfall?

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 15:41

I think it is down to the uncertainty sarahfreck - they are struggling to pinpoint the area and the severity.

You know, your plan to go on friday may not be a bad one at all.

wineonafridaynight · 21/12/2010 16:45

Thanks Snowy. We are right on the border of east/west mids and always seem to miss the worst of it from either side.

I've stupidly left myself with two car journeys to do tomorrow. Firstly I have to drop DP at work so I can have the car to go to doctors. Then I have to drive from my home to about 20 miles south to Northampton to get two Christmas presents. Could be interesting!

notsureatall · 21/12/2010 16:47

OYSSK - planning to drive from Brighton to Reading on Christmas morning. Should the weather be OK to you think? We could do it on Friday if forecast is much better!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 17:18

good luck wine :)

notsure - it looks very good at the moment on Christmas day :)

CherryTheRedNosedMonster · 21/12/2010 17:52

what is my weather doing please kitten? roads just beginning to thaw, are they going to freeze again?

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 18:07

I'm afraid so CM.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 18:08

You might also be just about in line for a little bit of snow tomorrow.

Justalittlereindeer · 21/12/2010 18:26

Does anyone know if we're any clearer on where the snow is headed tonight?

We've got a weather 'advisory' here in Milton Keynes, but our county borders those with a proper weather warning.

Is the snow likely to come this far south?

And how severe is it likely to be in affected areas?

notsureatall · 21/12/2010 18:34

Thanks OYSSK!

Christmas Day it is then (which means we can have the whole lovely waking up on Xmas Day thingy at home!)

mankyscotslass · 21/12/2010 19:01

I've just been out, the air feels more moist than it has for a few days.

Still blardy cold though, the weather station is showing -1, but I am pretty sure the probe is not working 100%.

miSaltireandwine · 21/12/2010 19:06

OK this snow thats meant to be coming in tonight across the midlands. It's not going to go anywhere near York is it (fingers crossed) as I really need some food in the house as I don't have much, and Tesco in York are due to deliver to me first thing tomorrow!.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 19:12

still no real confirmation. Milton keynes seems to be on the edge of it, perhaps just snow showers. met office are saying 10-25cm in the affected areas and looking at the projected radar I would think those are reasonable estimates.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 19:14

(sorry that was to Reindeer)
Saltire - York is on the northern edge of it, so I would say you are 'at risk' but no real certainty either way.

MiasMARY · 21/12/2010 19:15

zero chance of me getting from the west midlands of oxford on thursday to see my Mum then :(

I hate snow.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 19:27

MiasMary - thursday looks much better - so if you can get onto main roads perhaps it will be ok?

Justalittlereindeer · 21/12/2010 19:28

Thanks OYSSK. All this uncertainty is doing my head in, and I don't have to go anywhere apart from to do the last bit of food shopping. I really do feel for those trying to decide whether to travel long distances, or worried about loved ones getting home

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 19:37

You are welcome :) I'm really hoping that the stress of travelling will ease off for people on thursday and friday = as long as the exceptional cold some areas will see doesnt break things it should be better.

It must be gutting to be trying to get of this Island at the moment to get home.

miSaltireandwine · 21/12/2010 19:42

I think we should start another mN campaign "OYSSK should be in the new year honours list" Xmas Grin, for service to Mumsnetter the length and breadth of the UK"

MiasMARY · 21/12/2010 19:49

I took the car out earlier on and it was a horrible slipfest I wont attempt the motorways with my offspring in the car unless we have a miraculous thaw.

Gutted :(

I appreciate your posts oybbk.. thanks for being our resident weatherwoman :)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 19:50

:) you are welcome. I hope it improves quickly for you.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 19:52

Saltire Blush don't be daft! Its great here - I can dispense as much advice as I like without seeing everyone go Hmm at me. I drive my rl friends batty.
