what do you think? will the uk be buried under 6 foot of snow, or will cheltenham be cold, wet and windy?

If PILs have to get from Kidderminster to St Albans tomorrow, would you say they are better off coming today? BBC report suggests so.

theITgirl · 21/12/2010 08:19

What shall I do.
Due to go to Malvern tomorrow. Me & 2 dc.
So Hertford, M25, M40 Oxford, A40, Cheltenham, M5, M50, Malvern.
I could pack the car and go today. Looks like snow tonight so no idea what the roads will be like after that.
I was going to take the DC into London today for DH's office party for the children. How disappointing if we can't go Xmas Grin.
I can call parents if we go today.
I should also call Step-MIL in Oxford and stop for lunch/coffee & swap presents.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/12/2010 08:21

theITgirl - just started snowing in St Albans if that helps?

theITgirl · 21/12/2010 08:24

Thanks Bella, just started in Hertford as well, very light just a few flakes, but looks like quite a dump in Malvern tonight 4.5cm according to accuweather, who are useless at forecasting - but....

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/12/2010 08:25

you need to do reverse journey of my PILs! Thinking M1 might be better though. Will ring them and see what they are thinking ...

passmyglassplease · 21/12/2010 08:45

My dp has to get from Maidenhead to north London on Thursday, he HAS to get here as he has the turkey for xmas dinner Grin

It will be a bit sad if he doesn't make it Sad

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 12:12

Hello - just got in. Not with it at all yet!!!! So forecast will be a bit slow....

oranges · 21/12/2010 12:15

this is my dilemma from another thread....

I have no idea what to do. We are in London. Meant to be driving Wednesday morning to Cardiff to my parents house and staying till Boxing Day.
On Boxing Day, we are meant to drive back to London, and the next day, drive to Luton airport for a week's holiday in the sun hmm
Do you think that a)we should set off for Wales tomorrow and b)if we do, will we get stranded there on Boxing Day and miss our flight?
I can see a situation where we don't get to Wales then our flight is cancelled anyway hmm

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 12:28

Ok, very tired and the world keep spinning (don't know if its just late night exhaustion or if I'm coming down with something) so if it makes no sense please forgive me.

today (half way gone!!):
Snow moves in from Wales across the central areas of England. A bit of a thaw at the moment for some of us as you may have noticed. UKMO shows this snow as being more widespread than gfs covering southern england

Wednesday:
Heavy Snow in north wales and spreading to the midlands. Again UKMO shows it being more widespread than GFS, covering most of England.

thursday:
mostly dry and very cold :) parts of eastern scotland still a bit plagued. Temps in SE and EA not so cold. Maybe some rain in far SE

friday:
mostly dry and very cold. Highlands look a bit snowy. Temps in SE and EA not so cold

Christmas.
Cold and dry. Temps in SE and EA not so cold

Boxing day.
keeping my eye on this. Lots of very very cold over Christmas night, then towards the end of Boxing day much milder and wetter weather comes in from the west. I have no idea whether it will come in as rain with no issues or whether there might be a temporary ice issue boxing day evening.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 12:31

Oranges. Cardiff looks like it maybe affected by some reasonable snow tomorrow. If it looks bad still tonight can you go thursday? It looks much better!.
Boxing day I don't see an issue for you really. It looks like the weather from the west doesnt really arrive until the afternoon and it may well go straight to rain without a snow ice/interlude. Just be a little careful with your timing.
The monday looks fine :)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 12:33

(please be aware though that the timings of Sunday may change - its a way off. Also there is some uncertainty as to exactly where the snow will be tomorrow - it could be ok!!!)

oranges · 21/12/2010 12:45

thank you. Smile We could go Thursday - just means we have less time there before travelling back and flying. may be easier to stay put.

laughalot · 21/12/2010 12:52

Hi hope you feel a bit better soon I was ill over the weekend and its no fun. You say about snow in the midlands tomorrow does that include east midlands or still the west like it has been Grin.

duckyfuzz · 21/12/2010 13:25

We are now on our way back from cheltenham to Durham, m5 is fine at the mo if that helps anyone!

wineonafridaynight · 21/12/2010 13:39

Oh you Snowy Snowy Kitten - South Mids was forecasted lots of snow later tonight and tomorrow but just looked on Met Office and weather channel and it seems as though we won't get it any more. Is that true? (Trust you more)

ajandjjmum · 21/12/2010 13:58

Snowy - glad you're back - DH is asking what 'Snowy thinks is going to happen'.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 14:00

you are welcome oranges :)

laughalot and wine - it does look like it will spread right across to the east - not sure how heavy it will be. Aso to how far south it will go, well its another stupidly trickly one to predict. I think that if you drew a line from just north of cardiff across and another one just south of liverpool then you have a reasonable chance of some snow, heavy for a good part of wales and the western midlands. The question is, how far south of that band will get it really.

sarahfreck · 21/12/2010 14:02

OYSSK (or others)
Can you help?
Do you know what the travel conditions are likely to be between:
a) Manchester and Gloucestershire (edge of Cotswold scarp about 8 miles forn Gloucester) on 23rd or 24th
b) Manchester and London on 24th
c) Gloucestershire and London on 24th

Background to this request:
We were all planning to meet up at my sister's in London for Christmas (Christmas Eve travel)
BUT
My Mum says that she and my Dad are virtually snowed in in Gloucestershire at present (she doesn't feel confident in driving the car on their minor untreated road to get to the main road, plus she is hesitant about walking a lot on the ice and snow(she has replacement knee joints!))
AND my Dad (who has Parkinsons) has had a very nasty fall in the snow yesterday and is quite unwell at present.
AND She also says they have more snow forecast for tomorrow!

We are trying to work out whether it would be
a)best for them to stay put, in which case I will try and travel down to them instead of London
or
b) if my dad is fit for travel, I should try and get down to them on 23rd, to take them to London on 24th
or
c) if my Dad is fit enough and my parents can get the car off the drive and up the steep hill where they live and conditions have eased enough, my Mum could drive to London on 24th. We don't want her to have to drive in falling snow or untreated roads (She is particularly worried about conditions around Cirencester and Malmsbury as she has heard that the snow is very bad there)
or
d) if my Dad is fit enough, they could get to my sister's by some combination of train/taxi

Some insider information on the weather would really help cut down on some of the present unknowns!!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 14:05

:) thanks aj and laughalot. Got quite a sharp sore throat coming on now (gets a teeny little violin out) and dh has left a bit of a scene of devestation for me to deal with - the snow is giving him very long days so I'm not cross.

But, then watching the news I feel incredibly fortunate to be at home in the warm and comfort and not stuck in some random station.
hope you are fully recovered laughalot :)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 14:11

sarahfreck - there may be problems because of extreme cold temperatures. (seems to be a cause of many of the train problems) so I would try and rule out train options. Also, there is going to be very little thawing. It is too cold at night for salting to work in many places so if they aren't dug out yet they are unlikely to be so without the help of neighbours or the council.

fortunately snowwise at the moment it looks much better thursday and friday, so once you have tomorrow out of the way it is one less complication.

So, all in all, I think a would be the best option.

Nosnowplease · 21/12/2010 14:21

Snowykitten

Have to make a journey tomorrow am from
Cambridge to Leeds , returning in the evening.

Currently have train booked but if cancelled will have to drive.

What are my chances do you think??
Thanks you are a star!

sarahfreck · 21/12/2010 14:22

OYSSK
Thank you so much
This is my gut feeling too, but it is great to have your view and expertese on the weather. It is really kind of you!

duckyfuzz · 21/12/2010 14:30

Sarahfreck, we are on our way back from cotswolds now, its snowy but slush today rather than icy, we have however seen cars abandoned and lorries stuck on some minor roads

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 14:32

nosnowplease - I guess if you drive it will be all the way up the a1? At least, it may not be heavy snow on that side of England. I think you will travel through some though - and there is potential for heavier snow.

I'd certainly check national rail before you set off. I've had a quick look for you to see what it is like today and I'm afraid some of the trains are cancelled because of the problems with power lines being down (big problems at Kings cross because of this)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 14:35

sarahfreck - you are welcome :) Thats a bit of good news from duckyfuzz. Have you a car thermometer ducky?
