So yes, I know the official advice is six months and that we all think waiting till then is best, but in honesty, how old were your kids when they first tasted solid food?

I don't think I know anyone in RL that waited till six months!

OP posts:

DD had a few licks and tastes of things when she was 6 months old (4 corrected) but then I stopped and I'm going to start properly next week when she'll be 8 months (6 corrected).

I wish I hadn't given her anything before, but you get such conflicting advice for prems I wavered a bit before we decided to wait. She seems much more ready now - sitting etc.

TortillaDeMaiz · 12/03/2009 22:49

21-23 weeks, can't remember exactly. Now I think she was ready, but I wasn't.

rempy · 12/03/2009 22:51

6 months and one day for both.

Natt82 · 13/03/2009 07:41

DS1 was 26w exactly. He was fully FF until then.

DS2 was about 23w? He was BF until 16w and then mixed fed until weaning. 23w was chunks of things to taste, full weaning started about 25w I think? (Is it bad I hardly remember any dates with my second?!)

QueenEagle · 13/03/2009 07:44

11 weeks, 9 weeks, 12 weeks, 12 weeks and 12 weeks.

Divvy · 13/03/2009 07:46

3 months, 20 years ago
4 months
4 months
6 months
7 months

The 7 month old, is alot easier, he has lost the pushing out with tongue thing, makes it much easier! Plus we have skipped the first stage completely!

HecatesTwopenceworth · 13/03/2009 07:49

baby rice at - I honestly can't remember somewhere around the 10, 11 week mark. Maybe. Ish. But it was the HV who told me to and I didn't know any different. [defensive] (the kids are now 8 & 9 yrs old)

clumsymum · 13/03/2009 11:17

Those of you who said you wish you'd waited and done it later... why?

abraid · 13/03/2009 15:10

My children have (fairly mild) asthma. I've always comforted myself with the thought that I followed advice on feeding them almost to the day (they were 15 and a half weeks when I introduced baby rice and about 16 weeks was what they recommended then).

ALthough I suspect they'd still have had asthma if I'd waited until 6 months, I suppose there's a chance they might not have developed it.

I went on feeding until they were 9 months, so I feel I gave it my best shot (few women fed past 9 months in our area 11 years ago).

diedandgonetodevon · 13/03/2009 15:26

DS is 23 weeks and we are just starting out slowly.

cyteen · 13/03/2009 15:42

23 or 24 weeks, not sure which - started BLW after two days in a row of aggravated banana theft

georgimama · 13/03/2009 15:42

22 weeks. I didn't know about MN then and I didn't know it mattered so much. He was really hungry and I took that as a sign my milk was no longer enough. I wish I had known to just increase milk feeds - I would definitely wait longer next time.

Lulumama · 13/03/2009 15:44

i wonder where the OP went?

BarbaraWoodlouse · 13/03/2009 15:47

26 weeks + 1 day (DH wanted to be there so waited til the Saturday!)

HecatesTwopenceworth · 13/03/2009 16:01

clumsymum - because it can cause allergies and because the baby's digestive system is not ready for it etc.

rolandbrowning · 13/03/2009 16:09

25 weeks and 4 days.

MamacitaGordita · 13/03/2009 19:29

Glad to read this thread after listening today to my HV advising weaning at 15 weeks for one mum and telling me that the WHO guidelines are aimed at 'third world countries because of Nestle'.

Felt quite angry that the other mum will probably start weaning much earlier than she ought because of HV totally misinterpreting the research.

I don't know any mums who have waited til 6 months in RL so it's good to have some in the MN world!

DS1 19 weeks

DS2 20 weeks

DD is 11 weeks old and I will start at 21 weeks (we are on holiday when she hits 20)

ib · 13/03/2009 19:39

Bm thickened with baby rice at about 3 months, proper weaning at 4 months.

Paed's advice as he had bad reflux.

Cavs · 13/03/2009 19:40

26 weeks on the dot

rather than deciding you are going to wean at X number of weeks, is it not better to wait to see if your baby is showing signs of readiness?

Divvy · 13/03/2009 19:43

Really my 7 month old has just took to it really well, glad I waited. It was right for him.

Divvy · 13/03/2009 19:45

Its so difficult though, as you have mn in one ear saying its ok to wait till your baby is REALLY ready, then you have your hv in the other, saying completely different!
